Summary

  1. Join us for day five...published at 19:07 British Summer Time

After the fun and games from England this morning, India have dug in and ground it out here in Manchester.

The first three Tests of the series all went to the fifth day and have produced results. So there is still plenty of life left in this match.

If you missed any of the action you can watch the highlights on Today At The Test on BBC Two at 19:00 BST. It's also available via iPlayer as well.

Make you read Stephan Shemilt's verdict from day four, too...

We will, of course, be back on Sunday at 10:30 BST with live text commentary on the BBC Sport website and ball-by-ball coverage from the Test Match Special team.

Here's some other cricket stories which might take your fancy between now and then:

The covers are going on at Old Trafford but that's not the end of the live cricket on BBC Sport.

This evening is the final of Vitality Blast Women's League 2 between Middlesex and Yorkshire at Northants.

We have live commentary of that match here.

Ben Stokes chased one to deep extra cover, he held his hamstring, that was visible for everyone to see. We'll wait and see. Ben is a super-human at times and I'm sure if need be tomorrow... he was probably hoping today that they would get the wickets and he wasn't going to be required. Maybe the medical staff just said 'Ben, have a day off'.

Go back to Egbaston, he didn't bowl a great deal and then the week after he bowled plenty. I would think we'll probably see Ben Stokes tomorrow. He probably won't start and they'll hope they can get one or two wickets, because as Marcus Trescothick just said, if they can get some left-handers out there I think things can happen quite quickly.

But India will show a lot of fight, they're the kind of players that like batting a long period of time and they've got nothing to worry about chasing something. That's the worry for India, when they chase something they can panic a bit as we saw at Lord's. But tomorrow's a day when they can dig in, concentrate and just try and bat for time.

  4. England will assess Stokes'published at 18:59 British Summer Time

Trescothick 'hopeful' Stokes will bowl on day five

More from England assistant Marcus Trescothick on whether Ben Stokes will bowl again: "We are waiting to see, he is obviously stiff and sore, he has had a big workload in the last few weeks and obviously again in this game and had a bit of cramp while he was batting mainly yesterday.

"I think we are still hopeful that he will be better tomorrow once we come back out and be a bit looser and ready to go again but we will assess it over night and see what happens."

On Stokes bringing balance of the side: "That is always the case, isn't it, with all-rounders as they are absolute gold dust. They balance your team in a certain way and when you've only got seamers and one spinner you lose something.

"It's always important to make sure especially after getting five wickets in the first innings. Let's keep our fingers crossed, he'll get a massage tonight and good rest and hopefully come out strong tomorrow."

India have got it wrong here with the team selection and if they can get away with a draw, then it would be a remarkable escape. Runs are going to be important tomorrow with a constant eye on the scoreboard with England potentially chasing down a target late tomorrow.

  6. 'Patient India stuck at it'published at 18:56 British Summer Time

England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick: "The pitch is good, clearly. There is a little bit of variation in bounce and you've got to use the crease and find the cracks and make the most out of it. There are a couple of factors in play and we've got to work out a way with a solution come tomorrow.

"I thought they batted really well there towards the end and made it tough for us. They have a lot of passion about how they are going to work their way into the series.

"We thought we could get a few more wickets after the start, getting two wickets in the first over with the new ball. Then coming out after lunch, we thought we could really make headway into the batting order but it was not to be. They stuck at it well and been really patient in what they are trying to do."

India lost two wickets in two ball before lunch, and you wonder whether England could wrap things up inside two sessions... only for Shubman Gill and KL Rahul to show their mettle with a gritty partnership as they took the tourists from 0-2 to 174-2 with a defiant partnership.

I gave India no chance especially after their body language yesterday and when they lost two wickets early today, I thought they were knocked out. But I love character and they bounced back brilliantly with the mentality to prove us wrong.

England looked jaded and this shows how important Ben Stokes is to this England team. If they can get one wicket and get a left-hander out there, I think Jofra Archer and Liam Dawson will have more purchase from that.

This is the sign of a new India side with a new captain by showcasing their resilience and their will to fight for it. The biggest challenge I felt for Shubman Gill was if he can switch of his captain mode and be just the batsman.

I fear a bore draw. India have dug in and all credit to Rahul and Gill.

It was just defiance from India. The first 10 overs India faced it nipped a lot. But those two batsmen really worked a lot and senior players have to step up which they did and they have given themselves a fighting chance. It was quality batting from two batsmen who found their rhythm.

Defiance and defence gets India to the close of play. They trail England by 137 runs.

England have a lot to do tomorrow to win this Test match.

Oh dear, another misfield, this time from Brydon Carse, allows India to pick up another single off Shubman Gill's bat.

Next ball Root pings a quicker one to KL Rahul which strikes him just above the knee and he hobbles away in a degree of pain.

I just wanted to see a bit more variation from Liam Dawson, a bit more slower and some of them a bit more quicker. We know what he can do.

I can only assume Ben Stokes is saving himself for a marathon all-day bowling spell tomorrow to take the eight remaining wickets. Only explanation for him not bowling even a short spell this evening.

Liam Dawson, too, gives it a bit of air and spins one past the edge of Shubman Gill's defensive prod. Lots of oohs and ahhs from those in close catching.

We have one over to go. Joe Root will bowl it.
