KL Rahul has been solid in defence on the front foot today. This is a huge improvement to the defensive element of his game, because over the last five years, no batter to have played more than 500 front foot defences in Test cricket has a worst false shot percentage than Rahul (32.2%) when playing this shot.

  2. 50 runs

Rahul reaches fiftypublished at 42.2 overs

KL Rahul defends the first ball of Liam Dawson's 14th over, then guides him off the back foot between point and short third to reach his half-century.

53 times in Test cricket there have been teams who've been 0-2 and this is only the third time the team have recovered by putting on a 100 stand for the third wicket. By passing 106, it is the highest partnership for a stand that started at 0-2.

  5. Ind 115-2published at 42 overs

KL Rahul opens the face to the first ball of Jofra Archer's latest over which brings him a boundary through the vacant third region. Next ball India pick up four byes.

The ball had not passed the rope in the evening session until those two deliveries.

Ryan Barnes: Maybe two wickets in the first over was the worst thing that could have happened to this match. It's removed even the slightest outside chance of an Indian victory and forced them to shut up shop.

  7. Ind 104-2published at 40 overs

Harry Brook is nibbling on his nails at slip as Liam Dawson continues to bowl a probing line.

There's a glimmer of a run out chance midway through the over when KL Rahul played straight and Ben Stokes threw to the striker's end.

Stokes' aim is wayward but Brook dives to stop the ball and prevent any runs the overthrows.

When you come in at 0-2 and everything is a bit frantic, the Indian batters have done well to wrestle back a little bit of calmness. They'll just be thinking to plod along and make it to end of play today especially with a bit of rain expected tomorrow.

  9. Ind 102-2published at 39.2 overs

If I ask if it was a pint of Yuri Gaga-gin I fear it will see a flood puns to our inbox.

With England in need of a bit of bit of a pep up Ben Stokes throws the ball to Jofra Archer.

KL Rahul dabs it down, and he and Subman Gill run a couple, but the former can hear a creak in his bat so there's a delay while it gets changed.

I have. Neil Armstrong it was not.

  11. Ind 100-2published at 39 overs

From 0-2 to 100-2. You have to given some credit to Shubman Gill and KL Rahul for battling it out. A single apiece for the India batters off Liam Dawon's 12th over.

England very much still making India play with 24.4% of deliveries hitting the stumps. The most by England in the first 35 overs of any innings this series

  13. Ind 98-2published at 38 overs

    Trail by 213 runs

Third ball of the over from Chris Woakes stays a bit low and KL Rahul jabs his bat down to keep it out. Next ball, Woakes beats the outside edge.

TMS are currently chatting about leaf blowers which probably gives you an indication about how exciting the action is during this block-a-thon from KL Rahul and Shubman Gill.

India have dropped anchor and are grinding it out at the moment. It looks toothless without Ben Stokes, doesn't it? But it amazes me sometimes why some balls jump and some keep low and then all of a sudden it's gone and the wicket just becomes flat. All England need is one more, isn't it?

  18. Ind 98-2published at 37 overs

A pretty accurate assessment, Joe. By the way, decent cricket scene in Japan as I'm sure you know.

Liam Dawson finishes another over which prompts the groundstaff to come and work on the bowlers' footmarks.

Gill and Rahul are really showing grit here but you feel both need to contribute massive scores to get India out of this. Every remaining man has endured a significant bowling shift bar the one-legged Pant. They must be exhausted.
