'Decisive' Gill reaches half-century to help India recover from early setback

There's the half-century for the India captain!

He works Joe Root out to the mid-wicket, Jofra Archer gives chase and taps the ball back while diving over the ropes, with the batters running three.

The fifty comes from 77 balls - he reached 45 from 50 deliveries in the 20th over, but took a while to get over the line for the landmark, not adding to the eight fours he'd scored by that point.

  3. Ind 82-2published at 28 overs

Shubman Gill doesn't get a chance to chase his 50 in this Liam Dawson over, with KL Rahul facing a maiden.

We'll just about squeeze another over in - and Joe Root is coming on to bowl it.

Please watch out for Matthew Henry, folks.

We can't have a young man cut down in his prime.

One single from Brydon Carse's over, a KL Rahul push square, with Shubman Gill, on 49, leaving and defending the final three balls of the over.

It’s that time of day when small games of cricket are being played behind the stands. I’ve just almost been taken out by a particularly aggressive pull shot.

  7. Ind 81-2published at 26 overs

No time to wallow for Liam Dawson, time to bowl another over.

KL Rahul sweeps the first delivery of the over for three through fine leg.

Shubman Gill adds a single in the covers to move to 49.

That is a very catchable height for Liam Dawson and if anything he has moved too much. Had he stayed a bit upright then it would have been right in front of his eyes. Carse cannot believe it and getting a chance off Shubman Gill is not an easy thing to do.

    Put down!

Shubman Gill flashes at a full-ish delivery from Brydon Carse and sends an outside edge flying towards Liam Dawson at point.

The spinner dives for it but perhaps might have been better staying upright, and he spills from two hands.

The India batters run two, Gill moves to 48.

The red dots are where the ball pitched for all of Shubman Gill's dismissals in this series. You could almost draw a straight line down the pitch.

Three more dot balls to end the over - India have scored just one run from the last 20 deliveries.

  14. Not outpublished at 22.3 overs

    Yeah, wide of leg stump.

England lose a second review - they only have one left.

    Hmm, really?

I like this field from England - it essentially puts the onus on Shubman Gill to take the field on and hit balls down the ground or up in the air if he wants to score runs.

Shubman Gill has played beautifully after being out in the field for 150 overs and to play as well as he has done it is really impressive.

    Ah, a vital second angle - it's a row.

And I'm also gathering more images for an exhilarating photo book of compromised seating.

Second maiden in a row for England, Liam Dawson to Shubman Gill this time.
