Summary

  1. Ind 172-2published at 61 overs

Stephan is the chair of the hornets nest pokers society, I think.

Joe Root replaces Chris Woakes and decides to toss it up in an attempt to dangle the carrot, but neither Shubman Gill nor Shubman Gill take the bait.

A full toss to finish the over from Root and it is biffed down the ground for four.

  3. Ind 165-2published at 60 overs

Liam Dawson pushes one through with the arm and there's an inside edge from KL Rahul but the ball drops safe. Ben Stokes cracks a gag to Dawson later in the over. The England skipper seems in good spirits despite the stoicism of this India pair.

    A maiden from Dawson.

27% of Woakes' deliveries today have been going on to hit the stumps. This is the most by any seamer in any innings of this series.

Chris Woakes' lines and lengths have been spot on. He's searching for that same spot which saw the ball spit up off length but KL Rahul and Shubman Gill are steadfast in defence.

This is exactly what England have been waiting and hoping for - variable bounce.

For the first time in the series the umpires have just stopped the physios coming onto the field.

  8. ouch!

    Ind 164-2published at 58.1 overs

Chris Woakes finds a bit of extra bounce off a length and raps KL Rahul on the inside of the wrist. The India batter shakes his hand in pain.

Ollie Pope fields at short point as KL Rahul batsImage source, Getty Images

It's to Ollie Pope's credit that he always seems keen to field in some ridiculous positions under the helmet. He's just asked about going somewhere near the edge of the cut strip while Chris Woakes is bowling and is now doing so on his knees off Liam Dawson.

  10. Ind 164-2published at 58 overs

Ben Stokes shuffles his pack and Liam Dawson is back. His first ball is a bit loose down leg side and Shubman Gill flicks it fine for four.

KL Rahul has passed 500 runs this series and becomes only the 13th visiting opener to score more than 500 runs in England in a series and the second Indian opening batsman after Sunil Gavaskar.

Rahul hits two fours towards off-side in Woakes over

Chris Woakes is still working a channel outside off, but KL Rahul is relaxed with the pace off the pitch and he again opens the face. With no third in place he picks up four.

A couple of balls later and Rahul stylishly cuts behind point for four.

You just get the feeling that England are slightly going through the motions here, slightly funky fields in play and part-timers being asked to bowl. India are playing the situation in the meantime, and these two batters just need to make sure they are there until close of play.

  14. Ind 150-2published at 56 overs

Dot, dot, dot, dot, dot, dot. A maiden from Joe Root.

With 25 minutes or so to go, India's batters have made their intentions clear.

  15. Ind 150-2published at 55 overs

    Trail by 161 runs

Decent from Chris Woakes as he works a fourth-stump line to KL Rahul, who opens the face to pick up a couple but has to be watchful otherwise.

Rahul is 70 not out off 187 balls while Shubman Gill is unbeaten on 71 off 142 balls.

Different bowler but the same approach by Shubman Gill and KL Rahul. Can England break this partnership before stumps?

Chris Woakes replaces Liam Dawson tasked with doing just that.

  17. Ind 144-2published at 53 overs

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul happy to take the low-hanging fruit from Liam Dawson as they nudge and nurdle singles.

Somebody has thrown a toy spitfire or a hurricane on to the outfield.

Brydon Carse is told to stand down. Time for Joe Root.

I think it's time for Ben Stokes to take a chance and have a bowl.

Can the England captain please bowl his best bowler now... Himself.

These two have been absolutely brilliant for India when it would have been easy for them to throw the towel in after a long tour and the poor start they had especially without potentially having the services of Rishabh Pant.

  20. Ind 142-2published at 52 overs

Between deliveries Brydon Carse has the look of a man who is wondering if he has left the front door unlocked. He persists with the short-ball tactic but India continue to look untroubled.

All a bit going through the motions here.
