Of all the ones you'd want to stick, you'd want it to be that one.

  2. Eng 93-2published at 33 overs

Salt well and truly rubbed into the wound after Nat Sciver-Brunt plunders three fours off the remainder of Nonkululeko Mlaba's over. The South Africa spinner loses her head a little.

How big will that drop prove in the context in this Test match?

It's a tough chance, standing up to the spinners, but you have to take those. It's a poor miss for South Africa.

  4. dropped catch

    Sciver-Brunt dropped on 19published at 32.1 overs

    Eng 81-2

A routine chance, in all honesty.

Nat Sciver-Brunt prods forward at a delivery from Nonkululeko Mlaba and edges it, but it goes into South Africa wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta's gloves and out again.

Jafta has a second attempt to grab it but is unable to quite get a paw on it.

  5. Eng 80-2published at 32 overs

Suitably refreshed we're back under way in Bloemfontein with the left-arm spin of Chloe Tryon. He second delivery is fired down leg side and England pick up four byes.

My cricket highlight was attending a baking hot day in Dallas to see the USA beat Pakistan. Such an incredible atmosphere with the crowd becoming a lot more pro-USA as the match went on.

With the ball starting to grip and turn, South Africa have turned to a two pronged left-arm spin attack in Mlaba and Tryon. England's batters have had mixed fortunes against left-arm spin in Test matches. Sciver-Brunt has a superb average of 101 against it, but skipper Knight has struggled comparatively averaging a tad under 30.

  8. drinks break

England 75-2 at drinkspublished at 31 overs

    Lead by 189 runs

A solid start to the day for England as they reach the drinks break on a warm day in Bloemfontein.

  9. Eng 75-2published at 30 overs

Chloe Tryon offers up a gift early in her first over of the day with a bit of a drag down which is ruthlessly punished by Nat Sciver-Brunt, who whips it square to the boundary for four.

Steady start for England so far this morning, they're just trying to get into their stride.

South Africa have been very disciplined with the ball.

  11. Eng 68-2published at 29 overs

Nonkululeko Mlaba finds a bit of turn off the pitch at the Mangaung Oval, which will doubtless be of interest to England's spinners.

Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight content to milk Mlaba for a single apiece.

Nat Sciver-Brunt sees off another maiden from Annerie Dercksen.

On the subject of 2024 cricket highlights, I think my own would have to be attending an India v Pakistan match for the first time. That it took place in New York certainly added to the quirk factor.

  13. Eng 66-2published at 27 overs

Spin for the first time today in the form of Nonkululeko Mlaba.

A jab of the bat from Heather Knight to a flighted delivery from Mlaba and the England skipper squirts an edge wide of the fielder at slip for four.

Annerie Dercksen rattles though another over with Heather Knight happy to see off five dots before pinching the strike off the final ball of the over.

In the first hour, it is just about England getting themselves in and establishing a partnership. Losing Tammy Beaumont was a blow so they're resetting themselves now.

Once they establish a partnership, they can increase that run-rate and the fact South Africa are limited for bowling options, too, could help.

  17. Eng 59-2published at 25 overs

Nadine de Klerk continues to extract some movement off the pitch and Heather Knight continues to play in a rather circumspect manner. The England captain is placing a high value on her wicket.

Some news from down under where Australia seamer Josh Hazlewood is likely to miss the rest of the Test series against India because of a calf injury.

The 33-year-old felt tightness in his calf during the warm-up ahead of day four in the third Test in Brisbane, and left the field after bowling one over in the morning session.

He was sent for scans and Australia say the injury is likely to result in him missing the fourth and fifth Tests in Melbourne and Sydney.

The right-armer missed the second-Test win in Adelaide with a side injury.

He was replaced by Scott Boland, while uncapped duo Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett were added to the squad.

  20. Eng 58-2published at 24 overs

Nicely played by Heather Knight. She picks up four off Annerie Dercksen with a stylish cut off the back foot and the ball races away through third.

Dercksen holds up her hand apologetically next ball after she fires one down the leg side which goes for four byes.
