If you're feeling quizzical, every weekday during the India series, Test Match Special statistician Andy Zaltzman is posing a cricketing conundrum on BBC Sounds. It won’t be easy though. You’ll need to combine cricketing knowledge with guesswork to find the answer.

Andy will reveal the answer the following day.

    Afternoon, afternoon.

It's a glorious day across much of the UK, Lord's included.

Why not get inside where there's no screen glare and stick with me for the next few hours?

I'm also going to go in search of lunch.

Here's Mike Peter, who will be your guide for the afternoon session.

Bizarre session. Stokes' groin, Root's hundred. Bumrah brilliance, missed run out and a dropped catch. India let England off the hook, changed the ball twice and got in a tizz when they were given one they didn't like. The last time England batted first at Lord's, made 350 and lost, some fella called Bradman was in the opposition.

India have bowled well and Jasprit Bumrah has been brilliant.

England are slightly ahead in the game and the India batters will have to work hard to score runs when they come out here.

  6. Lunch - Eng 353-7published at 105 overs

    Smith 51, Carse 33

Thanks to Jamie Smith's half-century celebrations, that was the last over before lunch.

England take eight runs from it to move to 353-7 at the interval, with Jamie Smith on 51 (53) and Brydon Carse on 33 (62).

Slight concern for India as substitute wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel is struck on the finger and looks in a bit of pain. They've already lost Rishabh Pant (although he will be fit to bat).

Jamie Smith is the joint-eighth fastest England player to reach 1000 Test runs, doing so in his 21st innings.

This fifty is appreciated by his England teammates in the dressing room.

Jamie Smith makes it looks so easy and these are valuable runs that are being scored.

  9. 50 runs

Fifty for Jamie Smithpublished at 104.2 overs

With a four and a jogged single, Jamie Smith brings up his half-century off 52 balls. That was quite effortless.

Remember when he was dropped by KL Rahul on five? India certainly will.

Smith's such a talent. Easing close to 50 with a strike rate of 90 - no other batter higher than 60. And he makes it look easy! Dare I say, Root-esque?

Brydon Carse is very strong on the off side. He goes for it and never misses those ones.

He's a very good number eight or nine batsman and has two first class centuries.

'That was dismissive' - Carse hits Bumrah for four

The bowling change doesn't bring about the breakthrough.

Brydon Carse drives Jasprit Bumrah through the covers for four.

Jamie Smith, at the non-striker's end, is keen for a single off the next delivery but is turned away. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been busy in the field throughout this morning session, is alert and fires the ball into the stumps but misses - Smith would've been safe anyway.

  13. Eng 340-7published at 103 overs

Akash Deep is getting the ball to nip back into the stumps but Jamie Smith is unfazed.

He runs a mid-over two before retaining the strike with a single.

    Jasprit Bumrah returns.

  14. Eng 337-7published at 102 overs

    A quieter over. Three singles.

We're into the final 15 minutes before lunch.

If we want to convince the young and uninitiated that Test cricket isn’t slow and out of touch, I strongly suspect that stopping the event every few overs to look for a new ball for 10 minutes is not the way forward.

  16. Eng 334-7published at 101 overs

Brydon Carse charges Akash Deep and sends an unattractive hoick into the air. It plops safely into a space in the deep mid-wicket region and England run two.

Four byes and a driven four through the covers by Carse will do little to improve India's mood. They'd have been hoping to skittle England for under 300 after reducing them to 271-7 but now the hosts are closing in on 350.

New to cricket and India seem to be struggling to score many balls through the hoop so hopefully England can keep it up. Quite like the little bat game played in the intervals too.

Both of them have batted brilliantly. Jamie Smith, apart from the dropped catch, has looked very positive and carried on from the last game.

Brydon Carse is playing his natural game and playing his shots.

  19. Eng 324-7published at 100 overs

Nitish Kumar Reddy comes into the bowling attack and his second delivery of the day is tonked for four by Brydon Carse to bring up the 50 partnership.

The ball goes back to the umpire but don't panic, it's not another ball change. Just some running repairs to the seam.

I'm not sure why India wanted to change the ball because Jasprit Bumrah wasn't happy.

It was already doing a bit and they were taking wickets. Shubman Gill should've talked to Bumrah because he's the leading bowler.
