Akash Deep is bowling stump to stump. His release point is 20cm closer to the stumps than Bumrah and 30cm closer than Siraj. 12% of Deep's deliveries have been hitting the stumps, the highest percentage of all seamers in this match

The ball is changed. Shubman Gill has a grin on his face as he tosses it to KL Rahul for a shine.

Dot. Dot. The 99th over finally ends.

  3. Eng 318-7published at 98.4 overs

Aaaaaand the umpires are inspecting the ball again, with Mohammed Siraj and Shubman Gill overseeing the process, hands on hips.

The ball won't fit through the ring. Go and put the kettle on. You've got plenty of time.

  4. Eng 316-7published at 98 runs

Jamie Smith gets off strike first ball and the fielders close in on Brydon Carse. The wicketkeeper is up to the stumps, there's a fielder at first slip, and Yashasvi Jaiswal is back under the helmet.

Every delivery is accompanied by a chatter of noise from India's players but Carse stands firm before running a single off the final delivery.

Despite the loss of three wickets in the first hour, England have batted in a more aggressive manner today. Yesterday the overall attacking shot percentage was 29%, this morning it is 35%.

  6. Eng 314-7published at 97 runs

Jamie Smith's strike rate has dipped below a run a ball.

He has 36 (37) while Brydon Case has 14 (30). Their partnership is up to 43 (58).

It's been quite hard to judge the spin options in the last few games because the pitches haven't been conducive to spin, but it should be better for it here.

As England are batting first, Shoaib Bashir will be able to bowl when there's more rough for him later in the Test match.

Watching Bumrah suddenly makes me understand as an England fan how terrified other teams’ fans must have felt every time Jimmy Anderson took the ball.

Shubman Gill turns to the spin of Ravindra Jadeja and installs a helmeted Yashasvi Jaiswal at silly mid-off.

Brydon Carse gets off strike off the penultimate ball of the over and the field withdraws for Jamie Smith, who defends.

Shubman Gill still isn't happy with the ball. He spent the majority of the drinks break discussing the matter with the umpires, who were unmoved.

Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse keep the scoreboard ticking with five singles. If they can keep this up until lunch, England may be the happier of the two sides.

Absolutely loving this Test match. Grinding out hard runs against an excellent bowling attack, with a superstar who can turn the game in an over. But our attack is nowhere near this level. Our superstar will have to shine from ball one. Given his lack of cricket in recent years, it's hard to believe it'll happen...

England reached 300 in 92.3 overs. On the 33 occasions that England have made 300 runs in the Bazball era, it is the slowest they have ever taken to get there, taking longer than the 89.3 overs when they faced India in Ranchi in February 2024.

While the players take drinks, here's a reminder of the havoc Jasprit Bumrah has created in the first hour at Lord's.

He's removed Ben Stokes, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes.

Akash Deep replaces Jasprit Bumrah. England tick off five singles.

The fizz has gone out of India a little bit since that early burst of wickets.

Jamie Smith, on 33 (32), is looking increasingly settled since being dropped on five. Brydon Carse has 11 (17).

Can you discuss this constant problem with the ball? Years ago a ball change was almost unheard of. Surely these balls are defective and not fit for purpose.

    Marcus, Lincoln.

I'm not an authority on the subject, Marcus, but here's Steven Finn talking about why England and India are always badgering the umpire to change the ball.

England are moving forward after yesterday. This is danger time for India, that initial burst got them ahead of the game, but you are seeing Jamie Smith start to attack.

The camera has picked out Sir Brian May in the crowd. I wish they'd found him earlier. A golden opportunity to reference Another One Bites the Dust went begging when England lost Joe Root and Chris Woakes off consecutive deliveries...

Meanwhile, on the balcony, Harry Brook is tossing a ball up and down. Is he fancying a bowl later today?!?

As for what's happening on the field, India are briefly interested in a caught behind against Brydon Carse but opt against the review. Replays show there was no bat involved.

As it is an external injury he is free to bat wherever.

Three quick wickets for Bumrah, he's got the ball talking, and Gill asks for a ball change?!! Bizarre captaincy.
