Summary

  1. wicket

WICKET Critchley b Fletcher 5published at 13:49 British Summer Time 9 September

    Essex 73-3 v Notts

Very, very clever stuff, Luke Fletcher.

The Notts bowler sticks a man deep on the boundary to kid Matt Critchley a short ball is coming.

Instead it's full and plumb - Critchley leaves it, hoping it'll miss just wide, as any contact with pad would be an lbw shout, but, no, it takes the stump right out of the ground.

  2. Postpublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 33-2

Mercifully, the rain clouds have left Chester-le-Street and we're fine to play on.

Chemar Holder drops short and Josh Bohannon fetches the ball from outside off, pulling square for four.

Holder delivers a no ball, then bowls a much better line, forcing Bohannon to defend down the ground.

The last ball is short however and pulled away for two.

10 runs scored in the over.

  3. Postpublished at 13:44 British Summer Time 9 September

    Sussex v Glamorgan 116-6

Dan Douthwaite has been in survival mode and it was almost for nothing.

Tom Clark gets a little bit of extra bounce and finds the outside edge.

It flies at a perfect height towards the cordon, but somehow finds the gap between first and second slip.

  4. wicket

WICKET: Bean c Rahane b Wright 5published at 13:42 British Summer Time 9 September

    Leics 98 v Yorks 19-1

Scott Currie has Finlay Bean caught at slip by Ajinkya Rehane during day one of the County Championship Two match between Leicestershire County Cricket Club and Yorkshire County Cricket ClubImage source, Rex Features

    Leicestershire have their first wicket.

The left-handed Finlay Bean drives firmly at a full ball from Chris Wright going across him from over the wicket.

He edges low to gully where Ajinkya Rahane takes a good catch.

Can the Foxes get back in the game?

  5. Postpublished at 13:41 British Summer Time 9 September

    Middlesex 151-3 v Gloucs

Two fours in the over for Ryan Higgins, who pulls Zaman Akhter in front of square and then gets away with an edge pushed wide of second slip, through third man.

Higgins keeps the strike with a single pushed through cover on the back foot.

More punishment now for Zaman Akhter, who strays to leg and is clipped behind square for four, taking Middlesex to 150 in 34.1 overs.

  6. wicket

WICKET Albert b Evison 11published at 13:38 British Summer Time 9 September

    Kent v Hampshire 32-2

Toby Albert is late to sort this out and jab straight down and into his own stumps.

Perhaps the slightly slower pace from Joey Evison - bowling his second ball - got a tad more movement in.

Kent had only kept their opposition to under 400 once this season. Can they finally get a second?

  7. Postpublished at 13:36 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 23-2

Josh Bohannon moves to eight with a drive through cover for two off Chemar Holder, who of course is playing his first Championship game for Durham.

Bohannon gets two more pushed into the off side as the ball slows up just short of the rope.

Four runs driven through extra cover.

As much as we hate to report - it is starting to drizzle again.

An expensive first over for Holder, bowling wide of off stump and conceding eight.

  8. Postpublished at 13:35 British Summer Time 9 September

    Leics 98 v Yorks 18-0

Yorkshire batting at Grace Road after lunch having fired Leicestershire out in under 25 overs this morning after winning the toss.

As you might imagine, batting is also not straightforward for the visitors but they surely cannot bat as poorly as the Foxes did.

Yes there was plenty of movement, yes the odd one kept low but there were also some poor strokes and techniques found wanting.

Adam Lyth and Finlay Bean will hope to battle through to calmer waters.

Even a modest partnership will quickly have the home side under pressure with so few to defend.

How could Anon (12.43) possibly say that Surrey have no interest in their academy. The reason Shakib is playing is because a number of academy players that you can’t count on one hand are off playing for England! Isn’t there constant moaning that county cricket isn’t relevant preparation for Test matches any more because you don’t have the stars playing in it as you did in yesteryear? Don’t we all want to see young Arch Vaughan face Shakib on a day three pitch at Taunton where it’s ripping - I know I do!

50 for Max Holdenpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 9 September

    Middlesex 122-2 v Gloucs

Max Holden, Middlesex CCC acknowledges his fifty during Middlesex CCC vs Gloucestershire CCCImage source, Rex Features

That's his fourth 50 of a productive season in which Holden also has two centuries and a season average of 51.

He reaches the half century in 86 balls with a single pushed into cover off Tom Price.

Eight fours in his innings so far.

  11. wicket

WICKET Jennings b Raine 9published at 13:27 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 15-2

Alarm bells for Lancashire, who lose both openers inside nine overs.

Keaton Jennings looks perplexed on his way to the pavilion as the Lancashire captain plays down the line of the ball defending, misses and loses his off stump.

That looked next door to unplayable. Sharp seam movement on an immaculate length.

Venkatesh Iyer is in next and nearly departs himself after surviving a close LBW shout.

  12. Postpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 9 September

    Durham v Lancs 15-1

It's very gloomy at Chester-le-Street but the floodlights are off for now.

Josh Bohannon defends Matt Potts into the cover, then tries to get away with a single clipped to mid wicket but is picked up by Chemar Holder, who is making his first team debut for Durham.

  13. wicket

WICKET Carlson c Simpson b Clarkpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 9 September

    Sussex v Glamorgan 104-6

A second point for Sussex, and big trouble for Glamorgan.

Chris Cooke had taken a single first ball to put Kiran Carlson back on strike.

Carlson neither attacks nor defends with any sense of conviction and edges behind for a second c Simpson b Clark in three balls.

  14. wicket

WICKET Kellaway c Simpson b Clarkpublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 9 September

    Sussex v Glamorgan 103-5

Oh Ben Kellaway, what have you done?

The Glamorgan batter had been in so much control until Tom Clark drops a little short.

Kellaway takes it on down the legside and tickles it through to wicketkeeper John Simpson.

  15. wicket

WICKET Das c McCann b James 20published at 13:24 British Summer Time 9 September

    Essex 56-2 v Notts

Early wicket after lunch for relegation-battling Nottinghamshire - and a big blow for an Essex side still with a [slim] chance of the title.

Lyndon James gets Robin Das to nibble - well, it's a full-on bite, actually, a thick edge gobbled up gratefully by Freddie McCann at second slip. Nice take.

Leopold: Re the Surrey debate, I may be wrong but I think Smith, Atkinson, Pope, Curran and Jacks are all products of the Surrey academy. During the Hundred they had 15 players unavailable and played lots more youngsters.

Great signing [Shakib] for Surrey, hopefully he can hit the ground running, it was a completely fair signing considering we fill most of the England squads. Come on Surrey. Three in a row ole ole. UTR

    Andy from the Beehive Vauxhall.

@Anon 12:43. Of the 20 players Surrey have used with the red ball this year, 11 are from the academy, five more are England qualified (three of who were selected for England after moving to Surrey) and Worrall to be England qualified next year. But God forbid they sign an overseas player on a short-term deal when almost a team's worth of players are away with England.

    Somerset 93-3 v Surrey

Dan Worrall is Surrey's leading wicket taker

There will be no maiden first-class fifty for Archie Vaughan.

He'd gone really well in the morning session in just his second match.

But in the second over after lunch, Dan Worrall has him caught behind.

A full ball a good foot and a bit outside off, it should have been left but Vaughan feels for it and edges low to Ben Foakes who takes a good catch diving to his right.

  18. wicket

WICKET Du Plooy c Bracey b T Pricepublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 9 September

    Middlesex 122-3 v Gloucs

And now he's out. Great start to the session for Gloucestershire.

A peach of a delivery from Tom Price on off stump and just shaping away. Leus du Plooy has to play it and edges to keeper James Bracey, who takes the ball at hip height, diving to his left.

    Ryan Higgins is in next.

  19. wicket

WICKET Middleton b Garrett 8published at 13:19 British Summer Time 9 September

    Kent v Hampshire 20-1

Fletcha Middleton is playing down completely the wrong line to George Garrett.

Garrett simply cannons into the top of off stump.

If Kent are to avoid the drop they'll need a lot more like that and quickly.

  20. Postpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 9 September

    Middlesex 121-2 v Gloucs

Ajeet Singh-Dale bowls a full toss and Leus du Plooy drives gratefully through the off side for four runs.

That shot brings up the 50 partnership for the third wicket with Max Holden in 82 balls.
