Summary

  1. NZ 172-3published at 46 overs

Just one from Shoaib Bashir's over.

He's got through nine today already, which he may not have expected on day one of this Test.

  2. Not outpublished at 45.3 overs

    NZ 172-3

Good bowling from Shoaib Bashir to beat Kane Williamson in the flight and get the ball to drift past the outside edge.

Williamson did over-balance but managed to get back before Ollie Pope whipped off the bails.

That's confirmed by a quick review from the third umpire.

  3. NZ 171-3published at 45 overs

Another slight breakdown in communication between the two batters as Daryl Mitchell calls Kane Williamson through for a single.

Chris Woakes comes in from cover but doesn't pick it up cleanly and his throw isn't the best either so no harm done for New Zealand despite Williamson being very slow to set off.

Decent over from Ben Stokes all told, though.

The DJ is having a good day. They usually do in New Zealand. Currently playing The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. Controversial opinion, but the first half of that track is better than the second. You know, when it cuts into the bit they used as the F1 tune. It might be just down to my dislike of F1.

  6. NZ 170-3published at 44 overs

A rare misjudgement from Kane Williamson as he makes a mess of an attempted slog-sweep off Shoaib Bashir.

It gets the England fielders excited but the end result is a thick edge skewed down towards fine leg for two.

  7. NZ 166-3published at 43 overs

    Williamson 62, Mitchell 9

Ben Stokes targets the stumps and an inside edge saves Kane Williamson with the New Zealand batter trapped on the crease.

The England skipper also raced to deny Williamson a single and attempts to do the same a couple of balls later.

No chance this time, though, and a wild throw from Stokes leads to two overthrows as well.

  9. NZ 163-3published at 42 overs

Just two from Shoaib Bashir's latest over but next to no threat from the off-spinner.

That isn't unexpected in these conditions, especially on a day one pitch, but Ben Stokes seems to have decided he wants his spinner holding an end while the seamers rotate from the other.

Speaking of Stokes, the England skipper is readying himself to bowl the next over.

Before lunch, we saw an average of 0.8 degrees swing, and 0.8 degrees seam - after lunch, both of these have dropped, but only to 0.7. Nothing much has been happening, but it's not got appreciably worse.

  11. NZ 161-3published at 41 overs

Gus Atkinson's no-ball troubles continue with two more in this over, taking his total to six already today.

It's a shame because otherwise he's bowling nicely, settling into a good line and length in this spell.

Meanwhile, for those of you on over-rate watch, they are a long way behind at the moment...

I'm starting to worry about the structural integrity of the press tent. Folding chairs are being blown over. Also, I know the fast bowlers want the wind at their back, but it's really not helping Shoaib Bashir. Amy Satterthwaite and Lea Tahuhu have just wandered past, too.

  13. NZ 157-3published at 40 overs

Shoaib Bashir continues into his sixth over and after a good start, he's struggled for consistency in the last couple.

That continues and New Zealand take four from it with ease in increasingly blustery conditions.

    Maiden over from Gus Atkinson.

He holds a good line throughout, bowling full for the most part.

He does dig one in short, though, and Kane Williamson tries to pull it but manages only to get an under-edge into a rather delicate area... Ouch.

  18. drinks break

    NZ 153-3published at 38 overs

Nearly a costly mix-up between Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson.

Mitchell defended into the off side, set off for a single, then stopped as Williamson raced towards him.

He got going again but had Zak Crawley not slipped as he came in from cover, Mitchell might have been in trouble.

Joe Root is in a short leg - that's no way to treat a man in his 150th Test, surely? - and is hit on the lid as Williamson pulls another short ball from Shoaib Bashir.

The former England captain seems to be fine but will have the drinks break to recover anyway.

  19. NZ 149-3published at 37 overs

Banged in short by Gus Atkinson to end another probing over.

England have tried to apply some pressure but, with drinks just around the corner, New Zealand will still be the happier of the sides.
