Stokes is struggling. Hands on head, kicking the turf. He hasn't found the right length yet and is being punished. He looks short of a gallop, which he is.

  2. NZ 100-2published at 22 overs

Stokes still can't get these foot holes bedded in right - more sawdust is put down at the start of the over but he collapses in his follow-through on his second ball and hits the deck - to make matters worse, the delivery is called for a no ball on height.

He follows that ball with a cracking bat-beater to Williamson, but the New Zealand veteran then smacks him for consecutive fours, a drive through the covers and a pull through mid-wicket, bringing up the home side's hundred.

Stokes kicks the turf in frustration, he's really not having a good time out there.

Someone is dressed as a huge chicken on the other side of the ground. I have no idea why.

  4. NZ 90-2published at 21 overs

Ravindra drops an edge just short of Joe Root in the cordon from Atkinson's first delivery, but cashes in from the next ball, pulling powerfully for four.

He drives the next ball down the ground, but it slows just short of the boundary and he has to settle for three.

Had a massive cold over the last two nights, was up all last night shivering and sweating. Had to then spend today trying not to get better so I can be up all night tonight and follow what’s going on…can then legitimately call in sick for work tomorrow. It’s not the best way but it’s my way!

  6. NZ 83-2published at 20 overs

Stephan spotted it - Ben Stokes was warming up, and now he's coming on to replace his Durham team-mate Brydon Carse.

He over-steps to concede a no ball with opening delivery and his issues at the crease continue - he drags his penultimate down, Williamson pulls him away for four on the swivel and the England captain stares down at the foot holes in frustration.

There's then a conference with the umpire at the end of the over.

  7. NZ 74-2published at 19 overs

If Gus Atkinson can take a couple of wickets before lunch, I propose we paint over the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel with a gigantic fresco of the Surrey seamer. On board, Hugh?

Gus doesn't get his man from this over, but concedes just a couple of singles.

Hoping that a steady stream of wickets can keep me going through the night as I write my essay on Renaissance architecture, due tomorrow.

    Ben Stokes is getting loose.

  10. NZ 72-2published at 18 overs

Just one more run to the tally from this over, as Carse oversteps with his opening delivery.

Williamson fails to score from any of the legitimate balls, and sees the third delivery whistle past his bat.

This is a tidy start from Carse

The best strategy is to live in Australia! Play begins at 9am here in Sydney.. you could make a case it’s even better than watching in New Zealand as it covers the entire work day.

    Raphael

But surely if it covers the whole work day you won't get to see any of it because you'll be working diligently, right?

    Right, Raphael?

Rachin Ravindra has an excellent record against right-arm pace from both over the wicket (57 average) and round the wicket (72 average).

Since such data collection began in 2006, only Kumar Sangakkara, Kusal Mendis, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Simon Katich and Jesse Ryder also average over 50 from both angles against right-arm pace among left handers.

  13. NZ 71-2published at 17 overs

Atkinson has his first maiden as Ravindra fails to put him away.

The New Zealand bat attempts a swipey-pull and there's a half-hearted appeal for caught behind from the cordon.

Ben Stokes polls his team-mates and decides against reviewing it - rightly so, there was a gap between the ball and the toe-end of the bat.

So, Kane Williamson has 1,000 Test runs against England - he's the 130th batter to achieve the feat. Don Bradman tops this particular list with 5,028 runs followed by his fellow Australians Allan Border (3548) and Steve Smith (3417). Williamson is only the eighth Kiwi, with John Wright scoring the most (1,518).

Early days of course, but this is not looking particularly like a pitch that is doing a lot. Not seen anything to suggest this isn’t anything other than a solid batting track. Could be a long day for England.

This was sent before the Latham wicket went down. Still of the same opinion, Tattz?

  16. NZ 71-2published at 16 overs

Ravindra strikes Carse through the covers for three - we've had quite a few of those in the early stages of this innings.

The only runs from the Carse over, with the England seamer bowling briskly.

I'm looking forward to seeing Rachin Ravindra in the flesh. Part of the new fab four. Ravindra, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kamindu Mendis and Harry Brook.

England have bowled an average length of 6.8m with 46% in the 6-8m range - New Zealand have been brutal when they've overpitched however, scoring 31 off 25 when the quicks have bowled fuller than 6m.

  19. NZ 68-2published at 15 overs

Rachin Ravindra in at number four for New Zealand. At 25, he's the future of this side - the only batter in the top six under the age of 32.

He's averaging over 50 in 2024, and gets off the mark with a knock into the covers off Atkinson, who's changed ends, before Williamson takes three down the ground.

  20. wicket

    Latham c Pope b Carse 47 (NZ 62-2)

    CarseImage source, Getty Images

Latham's snagged after the drinks break!

The New Zealand captain falls just short of fifty, edging Brydon Carse behind while trying to nurdle into the on side.

A little outside edge and that's enough - Pope takes the ball comfortably.

Latham will be disappointed, he looked well set for a big score. Excellent bowling from Carse, who'd troubled Latham earlier in the over with an lbw shout.
