Summary

  1. NZ 207-4published at 54 overs

Oh, Kane Williamson, your hands are so soft.

Put them in skin lotion adverts, let them caress my face.

Um, anyway, once again those delicate hands save the New Zealand veteran as he drops yet another edge just short of Joe Root in the cordon. There's been quite a few of them today.

The hands have power too though, and he cuts Woakes' final delivery to the point boundary for four.

  2. NZ 203-4published at 53.1 overs

200 up for New Zealand as Woakes' first delivery deflects off Williamson's thigh and whistles off to the boundary behind the keeper for four leg-byes.

  3. NZ 199-4published at 53 overs

Wicketkeeper Tom Blundell is in at six for New Zealand.

He ducks under Carse's first delivery and fends off the next one to end the over.

Carse strikes in his first over after tea!

Mitchell goes to loft the England seamer's delivery to the leg-side boundary, but the ball doesn't lift as much as he anticipated and he ends up sending a massive top edge spiralling in the air down to the boundary at third.

Harry Brook is positioned down there and he takes a fairly simple catch.

  5. NZ 197-3published at 52 overs

Chris Woakes will get us going again.

Williamson tucks his first ball away off his legs for a single.

We then immediately have a break as the players gather to stop the stumps wobbling in the the wind - a bat handle is taken to the off pole to hammer it deeper into the ground.

We've theoretically got 39 overs to bowl in this session - I rather suspect we won't have that many.

Almost time to resume, the players are gathering on the sidelines.

Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson will come to the middle with a partnership worth 63 - will they be able to kick on?

Still the cricket rom-coms have been fun.

Someone tried to get "Top Gunn and Moore" through though - not sure that's the right genre.

    We need discipline here, people.

All the garages are closed, the mini-rolls are gone.

I am bereft, Sam. A lost soul wandering from room to room, my wails of torment echoing through the night.

Only England wickets can save me.

New Zealand added 89 runs in that session for the loss of only Rachin Ravindra so England have got plenty to ponder at tea.

Anyway, back to let us know whether the all-night garage had any chocolate mini rolls in stock, here's Mike Peter to take you through tea and the start of the evening session...

  11. Tea - NZ 193-3published at 51 overs

    Williamson 77, Mitchell 16

It is a bouncer barrage from Ben Stokes but, as with just about England have thrown at them this afternoon, New Zealand's batters look comfortable.

Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell combine for three runs from it - and that's tea.

Another good session for the hosts, losing just the one wicket.

Ben Stokes will continue for what could well be the last over of the session.

The field is set for some short stuff.

  13. NZ 190-3published at 50 overs

Jacob Bethell's first ball in Test cricket goes away for four.

Full, sliding down leg and Kane Williamson sweeps it away very fine.

It's much better from there, just a single from the next five balls.

Jacob Bethell is coming into the attack on his Test debut.

He's in for his batting but he's going to show us his left-arm spin here...

  15. NZ 185-3published at 49 overs

    Tidy over from Ben Stokes.

There have been plenty of those from England in this session but very few where the bowlers have carried a consistent, genuine threat.

Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell have been solid in defence when they've had to be.

  16. How's stat?!published at 02:29 Greenwich Mean Time 28 November 2024

Kane Williamson averages 52 on this ground, while his batting partner Daryl Mitchell averages 58. This could be a long afternoon for England.

  17. NZ 184-3published at 48 overs

Shoaib Bashir races through another over, changing the angle to go round the wicket to end it but with the same result.

A little more than 10 minutes until tea and New Zealand are in control as it stands.

  19. NZ 182-3published at 47 overs

Ben Stokes starts his over with a bouncer that he gets horribly wrong.

Too short, down the leg side and it sails out of Ollie Pope's reach for five wides.

It's all looking very easy for New Zealand at the moment with Kane Williamson calmly going about his work and Daryl Mitchell getting himself set, too.

In innings where Williamson has scored at least 40 runs against seamers (which has happened 67 times in Tests), this is the lowest percentage of runs he has scored behind square (7%).
