  2. rain stops play

Delayed start at Chester le Street - play to resume at 14:00published at 13:52 British Summer Time 24 May

    Durham 277 & 18-2 v Somerset 172

There was a bit of a sharp shower during lunch and, although it's stopped raining, the covers are still on.

The umpires have had a look and are happy for play to start at 14:00.

No overs lost in the day as that extra half hour now comes in to play.

  3. wicket

WICKETpublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 24 May

    Bess c James b Abbas 11 (Yorks 124-8 v Notts 228)

Dom Bess tries to walk down the pitch to negate the swing but he is still beaten by the movement away and edges to fourth slip where Lyndon James takes a stunner, low to his right.

  4. Derbyshire reach 500published at 13:51 British Summer Time 24 May

    Derbyshire 501-4 v Kent

Caleb Jewell carves a ball from Matt Parkinson square of the wicket for a single and that takes the Derbyshire total to 500. As we said earlier, he is looking for a new career-best of 228 - or higher.

  5. 150 runs

150 for Hudson-Prentice and Simpsonpublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 24 May

    Hants 154 v Sussex 236-5

This partnership is up to another milestone as John Simpson (75) and Fynn Hudson-Prentice (64) continue to tick over.

Just three overs until the new ball is due and both sides are in something of a holding pattern waiting for it.

  6. Postpublished at 61 overs

    Surrey 218-7 v Essex 217

And just like that, Surrey are into the lead as Jordan Clark pulls the final ball of Shane Snater's expensive over for four runs.

  7. Postpublished at 13:48 British Summer Time 24 May

    Worcestershire 119-5 v Warwickshire 227

Post-lunch the mantra for Worcestershire will be 'how many' rather than 'how' in these testing conditions.

We've just seen the perfect example of that as Chris Woakes opened up after lunch.

His fourth ball drifts in and swings away like so many did this morning and takes the edge of Kashif Ali.

But it's a controlled edge and goes down rather than up as it races down to deep third for four.

Not convincing but it's four in the book and that's what counts.

  8. Postpublished at 60.2 overs

    Surrey 212-7 v Essex 217

When you see Sam Curran continuing to bat like this, you think perhaps number four is the right place for him in the Surrey order.

He cover drives Shane Snater for four and when the bowler adjusts his line, works the next one wide of mid-on for another.

Curran is now 64 not out.

  9. rain stops play

Rain stops play in Cardiffpublished at 13:45 British Summer Time 24 May

    Glamorgan 383 v Middlesex 20-1

There will be no prompt resumption after lunch at Sophia Gardens as the rain has arrived.

Max Holden and Luke Hollman are the not out batters for Middlesex, on 14 and nought.

  10. Postpublished at 59.1 overs

    Surrey 204-7 v Essex 217

Former England captain Graham Gooch is a guest at The Oval today - what a great batsman he was.

He'll be hoping Essex can knock over these remaining Surrey wickets in short order this afternoon, and that his former county can then do the business with the bat, just as he did for so many years.

Kasum Rajitha takes up the attack and Sam Curran swings his first ball away for a single.

James Harris is one of the most experienced campaigners on the county circuit. Earlier this week, he backed a cut in the number of first-class games from 14 to 12 to keep standards high. 12. Wickets offer 'slender hope' for Somersetpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time 24 May

    Durham 277 & 18-2 v Somerset 172

    Anthony Gibson
    BBC Radio Somerset

Another desperately disappointing batting performance from Somerset.

The fact that Jack Leach finished top scorer with 30 says it all, even if the atmospheric conditions could hardly have been more bowler-friendly.

The wickets of Ben McKinney and Emilio Gay in the 20 minutes or so which Durham had to bat before lunch will have given the visitors just a slender shaft of hope.

But Durham are effectively 123-2, which on this pitch, in these conditions, is a commanding position.

  13. Woakes and Rushworth 'bowled beautifully'published at 13:27 British Summer Time 24 May

    Worcestershire 115-5 v Warwickshire 227 - lunch

    Clive Eakin
    BBC CWR Sport

Worcestershire’s hopes of securing their first Championship win against Warwickshire for 25 years suffered a blow in the morning session as they endured a batting collapse induced by Chris Woakes and Chris Rushworth.

The pair have bowled beautifully in their first games of the season after recovering from injuries, taking advantage of a favourable pitch and cloudy conditions overhead.

The home side looked steady enough even after the fall of the first wicket, Jake Libby for 45, But after Kiwi Henry Nicholls became Woakes' second victim the wickets tumbled, four falling for eight runs.

Ethan Brookes and Kashif Ali are working hard to steady the ship surviving 13 overs to lunch but each had a life as Alex Davies and Beau Webster put down chances.

  14. 'Hard work ahead' for Middlesexpublished at 13:25 British Summer Time 24 May

    Glamorgan 383 v Middlesex 20-1 - lunch

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

Ryan Higgins completed his first Middlesex five-for on an evenly-fought morning under cloudy skies in Cardiff.

Resuming on 334-7, Glamorgan managed a third batting point as Andy Gorvin ran three boundaries down to third man before being bowled by Ryan Higgins for 17.

Middlesex missed out on the third bowling point but Dane Paterson switched ends to trap Chris Cooke lbw for a solid 47, and Higgins claimed his fifth when James Harris was lbw for 12.

With six overs left and the ball moving, the visitors lost Sam Robson caught at slip for six off Timm van der Gugten to leave them with hard work ahead.

A bit of international cricket news for you.....former Glamorgan batter Shubman Gill has been named as the new captain of India's Test side ahead of their tour to England, which begins on 20 June.

There are a few other names in there with county experience, including ex-Surrey batter Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair, who had a couple of spells with Northamptonshire.

  17. Lunch at Wantage Roadpublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 24 May

    Northants 423-8 v Glos

Northamptonshire grind on. Saif Zaib will rightly be the star after his epic 159 but hats off too to Lewis McManus (43), Calvin Harrison and Liam Guthrie.

The last two have so far added 48 for the ninth wicket to increase Gloucestershire's pain who've taken only two wickets this morning.

A fifth batting point will be top of the to-do list post lunch for the home side.

  18. Lunch at New Roadpublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 24 May

    Worcestershire 115-5 v Warwickshire 227

    Chris WoakesImage source, Rex Features

Worcestershire limped to lunch, battered and bruised from a working over from Chris Woakes and Chris Rushworth.

After Jake Libby and Gareth Roderick's super effort last night to get them to 53-0, they had no answer in cloudier conditions to the two Chrises who toyed with them mercilessly with their swing and seam.

They took the five wickets between them (Rushworth 3-26 and Woakes 2-23) and will come out refreshed after lunch.

Kashif Ali and Ethan Brookes got the the interval against the rest of the Bears attack in one piece but they'd take getting first-innings parity now.

That might still take some getting though.

  19. Lunch at Leicesterpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 24 May

    Leics 189-2 v Lancs 206

Lewis Hill and Rehan AhmedImage source, Rex Features

A session which went relentlessly Leicestershire's way and featuring two very good innings from Rehan Ahmed (84) and Lewis Hill (79).

Their partnership of 165 for the third wicket has put the hosts in a commanding position trailing by 17 runs with eight wickets still standing.

Lancashire have looked out of ideas for a while as they search a first win of the campaign and this one is not likely to offer solutions at the moment.

  20. 'Excellent morning for Sussex'published at 13:10 British Summer Time 24 May

Utilita Bowl overviewImage source, Adrian Harms/BBC Sussex

An excellent morning for Sussex who have added 118 without loss on a pitch that yesterday saw 15 wickets fall.

John Simpson has again led from the front and must be one of the shrewdest signings Sussex have ever made, averaging almost 80 this season.

Fyn Hudson Prentice has provided excellent support completing his first half century of the season but was given a life when dropped at slip when he was on 51.

Hampshire may be regretting their decision to bat first yesterday and will be hoping the new ball due in five overs brings rewards.
