Might be time for a change. Unleash Mark Wood. Ben Stokes might want a go with this swinging ball, too.

If we are being critical of England, it's that they've bowled just a fraction short.

I just wonder whether giving the bowlers a little more protection on that off-side, that might encourage them to bowl that tad fuller?

Apparently England have beaten the bat on nine occasions this morning. It doesn't feel that many. Lovely from Brathwaite, who drives Woakes straight back down the ground for four and follows up with a crunch through the covers.

Edgbaston has always been something of a fortress for England. From 2002 and 2018 they won 10, lost one and had three draws on this ground.

But since then, England have lost three of their last four Tests here - against Australia in 2019, New Zealand in 2021, and then against Australia in 2023.

They did have a fine win in the delayed fifth Test against India in 2022.

Mikyle Louis is away from the 22nd ball he's faced, a little punch into the off side off Atkinson for a single.

The Eric Hollies stand is start to fill up now with fans still trickling through the gates at Edgbaston.

Saturday, of course, is traditionally fancy dress day but there's about dozen here today sporting Fred Flintstone outfits. Not sure what the collective noun is for a group of Fred Flintstones?

Legendary former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, of course, earned the nickname 'Fred' from the Flintstones' lead character so there is a cricket connection from the old cartoon.

As an opener you have to see through this period, rather than thinking 'I'm not getting a run here' and nicking off.

If you can battle it out for half an hour, all of a sudden things can change. That's the beauty of Test match cricket.

Talking of growing veg, I'm almost certain Edgbaston is the only cricket ground in the country (world?) with its own allotment. Louis still isn't off the mark. England have four slips and two gullys. Woakes is still too short.

I planted some fennel plants that were completely eaten overnight by slugs. Replaced them with swedes that are obviously a bit tougher as it took them two nights to eat them all.

Being hyper-critical, England might not have got it quite right yet. Woakes a fraction short, now Atkinson gets too straight and Brathwaite clips for four. It's good cricket, though. Keen contest.

It's a testing period this, and that's what it should be like in a Test match. There should be that awkward period for the openers to master and get through.

It's just doing a little bit through the air which has surprised me a little bit.

There doesn't look to be loads of pace in the pitch. A couple that Woakes has bowled have kept a bit low. Things might be different when Mark Wood gets the ball. It's swinging, though. When Woakes is too short, Brathwaite punches through the covers for three.

It's going to be a crucial first hour and a half or so here for the West Indies to get through. The odd one is just wobbling about a little.

I like Mikyle Louis. He hasn't got many runs, but he sets up well. Big stride, solid defence, when he hits it it stays hit. He's not off the mark yet, though. He's faced 15 balls.

Wood very rarely bowls with the new ball. Atkinson hadn't done it much for Surrey before he played for England.
