    It's raining.

    I'm so sorry.

New Zealand have been poor. At times it has felt a little bit dire. They have come out of a New Zealand winter to play a battle-hardened England team in the middle of their home summer.

England look fit and firing and at the top of their game. New Zealand are not in that position.

There needs to be a bit of honesty. They are just not quite as good as England but not as bad as they have shown.

In three out of the past four ODI series against England, New Zealand have won the third match when it's been a dead rubber.

They've been so below-par in the first two matches of this series, it's going to take something pretty special to repeat that trend.

If you think you've been waiting long enough for this match to start, consider that I forgot the start time and arrived two hours early.

You know that old advertising slogan - "15 overs and another rain delay... come to those wait."

  8. Postpublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 3 July

A bit of news on the playing conditions - it's going to be 42 overs a side.

If we get any more rain that figure will start dropping further...

Well this is frustrating. Half an hour away in Bath, it's overcast but with zero rain (and no sign of any) and barely any wind. Stupid regional weather.

  10. Match to start at 14:35 BSTpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 3 July

Oh, I'm back a little sooner than I expected.

The covers are coming off at Bristol and play is now scheduled to start at 14:35 BST, provided there is no further rain.

So it's promising... except I've been looking at the Met Office rain radar and it looks like there's a solid wall of blue hitting the ground about an hour after the revised start time, which is set to hang around for about 90 minutes.

Still, some cricket is better no cricket, right?

Right then, I've been overcome by excitement and am going for a lie down.

I'll be back to deliver any news of further inspections or rescheduled start times.

Meanwhile, why not enjoy the extended highlights of England's big win in Sunday's second ODI? They're on iPlayer for your viewing pleasure.

We've also live coverage from day four of the ongoing round of the County Championship, as well as Wimbledon and the Tour de France.

See you shortly, with any luck.

Looks like a long delay at Bristol today before play starts. I was at the England vs Ireland men's game last summer which was abandoned due to monsoon conditions. Why did I buy tickets for the one day international against Australia in late September to be played here...?

No doubt we'll get an update soon, although I'm not sure it'll be anything more than "no play yet".

We start losing overs soon, so we'll definitely have a shortened match if the players do get on.

I've just watched umpires Anna Harris and Rob White troop down the steps from the pavilion and confer with the ground staff in the middle.

Both are carrying umbrellas, but neither are open.

    Some fascinating sporting insight there.

  16. Bouchier and Ecclestone star in second ODIpublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 3 July

While we wait for some action, let's cast our minds back to Sunday, where Maia Bouchier and Sophie Ecclestone were the headline makers in the second ODI.

Ecclestone lived up to her status as the world's number one ODI bowler, taking 5-25 as New Zealand were skittled for 141 in 41.5 overs.

Bouchier then hit her maiden century as England comfortably sealed victory by eight wickets.

England all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

Sophia Dunkley is a fantastic player. She struggled at the end of last summer so went away over the winter and worked really hard with batting coaches.

She has been out of the limelight for a bit playing regional cricket and has thrived. She is one of the hardest workers I know. She has found something that works for her, gone out and scored stacks of runs, got her confidence back and earned her call-up to the squad.

    Hold on a minute.

The bowlers' run-ups are now being covered up - that would suggest a further delay.

Umbrellas are up in the stands.

    We've got a revised start time - it's 13:15 BST, so just a 15-minute delay.

    No overs lost.

It has stopped raining, but the ground staff are hovering. That usually means they know something we don't (i.e. more rain is coming).
