Joe Root edges it but it falls just short of Salman Ali Agha. It kept very low and Salman can't get any closer there, unless he puts a helmet on.

The softest of soft hands from Joe Root means that a genuine edge off Noman Ali doesn't carry to slip.

Another nervy moment for England, though.

They've got all of Saturday, too, if they need it, Adrian...

Anyway, they won't win this match just by sitting in and hoping to survive scoring two an over.

Ollie Pope knows that and sweeps hard, square of the wicket for four.

England do realise that they've got the rest of the day and tomorrow to get these runs? You'd never think so.

Zak Crawley was stumped in the fourth over of this innings and that is the third earliest in a Test innings that an England batter has been stumped.

The earliest to get dismissed in that manner for England is Sir Alastair Cook who was stumped in the fifth ball of the innings off Ravichandran Ashwin in Kolkata in December 2012.

Just two from the Noman Ali over as Joe Root goes back and works the ball through the leg side.

Otherwise the former England skipper remains watchful.

As a Pakistani, I feel that England fans have more faith in our team than we do! England are still well in this until Root and Brook are gone.

  8. Eng 15-2published at 5 overs

    Target 297

This is all hard work for England at the moment.

They take three from Sajid Khan's latest, two sweeps from Joe Root and one non-sweep from Ollie Pope.

Slightly more than 15 minutes left in the day, the tourists just have to dig in.

Looking back at that wicket, you might say that Zak Crawley was in Noman's land.

(I definitely came up with that myself and most certainly would never steal it from a colleague.)

  10. Eng 12-2published at 4 overs

    Target 297

Joe Root, the number one ranked Test batter in the world, walks out with England in a real bind.

He gets off the mark with, you guessed it, a sweep shot.

Just a single from the over.

That's a left-arm spinner's dream from Noman Ali. Zak Crawley was just reaching for the ball and ends up such a long way out of his crease.

Pakistan have got off to a dream start here.

    Too good from Noman Ali.

A beautiful flighted delivery that entices Zak Crawley to come forward on the drive.

The ball dips late, turns past the bat of Crawley and his momentum has taken him out of his crease.

Simple stumping for Muhammad Rizwan and England are in all sorts of bother already.

  13. Eng 11-1published at 3 overs

    Target 297

Pakistan have two men deep on the leg side already, they know England are going to try to sweep their way to victory.

It saves six runs in the over as Zak Crawley nails a couple of sweeps, just getting one each time.

In between, Ollie Pope plays a rather less convincing reverse that loops into the off side but there was no fielder in the covers so it was safe enough.

It obviously takes a lot to quiet the pessimist in me but I can honestly say that, in more than 40 years of watching Test cricket, there is no England side I believe in more than this one to chase these runs down. (Cue collapse, obviously).

  15. Eng 8-1published at 2 overs

    Target 297

Tossed up by Noman Ali and Ollie Pope middles the cover drive.

However, Abdullah Shafique dives to his right to make an excellent stop.

Pope goes to the lap sweep to end the over and it brings him two.

  16. Eng 6-1published at 1.1 overs

    Target 297

Noman Ali shares the new ball and there left-arm spinner appeals loudly for lbw first ball.

Ollie Pope attempted the reverse sweep, didn't make a good connection at all but there was definitely bat involved.

    Not out.

  17. Eng 6-1published at 1 over

    Target 297

    England won't stop sweeping.

Ollie Pope is in at three and nails a sweep through square leg for four.

He follows it up with a reverse sweep that brings him one.

Sajid Khan pushed it through really, really quickly again. Because of that kick and bounce off the seam of this brand new ball, it catches the bottom corner of Ben Duckett's bat.

Gone - what a start for Pakistan!

Ben Duckett goes for his favoured sweep shot but the hard new ball gets a touch of extra bounce and finds the top edge.

The ball loops up and Muhammad Rizwan comes from behind the stumps to take the catch.

Terrible start for England. What a game Sajid Khan is having on his return to the Pakistan side.

  20. Eng 1-0published at 0.1 overs

One ball, one sweep for England.

Zak Crawley gets the chase under way with a single.
