Around 35 minutes left in the day and we're ready for the start of the England chase.

They need 297 to win the series, Pakistan require 10 wickets to level it.

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett are all set. Sajid Khan will bowl the first over.

England have to come out playing the shots. There are going to be plenty of sweeps in this innings.

Ben Duckett is someone who loves playing sweeps and reverse sweeps, but Ollie Pope, Joe Root and Harry Brook will all have to adapt to that style of play in their quest to try and knock off these runs.

You need to keep putting the pressure back on the bowlers because you are there to be taken, if you become sitting ducks on this pitch.

It was certainly a frustrating spell for England but does it perhaps offer them some hope that it is still possible to score runs - and quickly - on this Multan pitch?

Chasing 297 will take an unbelievable effort. A record-breaking one in fact...

Since 2023, the rate England bowlers dismiss batters number eight or lower has been 35 balls per wicket, which is only better than Bangladesh's rate of 43 balls per wicket.

England need 297 runs against Pakistan to win this Test series. We are not far away from the Himalayas, and it evokes the thoughts of having to climb up one of those. It will be an herculean task to score those runs.

Two or three batters will have to make substantial contributions, because others could simply get a ball with their name on it that they can do nothing about.

  7. England need 297 to winpublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 17 October

The tourists' bowlers really put in the hard yards in that innings and having reduced Pakistan to 156-8, kept their side in with a chance.

However, two dropped catches in the space of three balls prior to that meant Salman Ali Agha was still there - and he proceeded to punish England.

The Pakistan batter's half-century in a crucial stand with number 10 Sajid Khan means the hosts are well placed to level the series.

That partnership between Salman Ali Agha and Sajid Khan really sucked the wind out of England's sails and they face an uphill task if they are to get anything from this game.

  9. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 59.2 overs

Sajid c Smith b Potts 22 (Pak 221 all out)

Feathered behind to end the innings.

Another bouncer, Sajid Khan tried to sway clear of it but the ball followed him and flicked the glove on the way through to Jamie Smith.

Pakistan's tail has wagged and England need 297 to win on a very tricky eighth (and ninth) day pitch.

England faces a dilemma on this challenging pitch: adopting a Bazball approach risks losing your wicket while taking your time and focusing means you're just one ball away from getting out, which adds immense pressure on the dressing room. On a pitch like this, playing against spin relies heavily on instinct—90% instinct and only 10% technique and temperament.

Number 11 Zahid Mahmood gets through the remainder of the Brydon Carse over unscathed.

Back over to Sajid Khan, who will fancy having a bit more fun with the bat before he tries to get stuck into the England top order.

It's a well-deserved wicket for Brydon Carse as England eventually go to the bumper theory.

Salman Ali Agha look to take one over mid-wicket, but rushes it a touch and ends up splicing it.

  13. wicket

    Salman c Stokes b Carse 63 (Pak 221-9)

The end of a potentially match-winning innings.

Brydon Carse also goes to the short ball, Salman Ali Agha wants to take it up but completely mistimes the pull shot.

It loops gently to Ben Stokes at mid-wicket and a 65-run ninth-wicket stand comes to an end.

Dropped on four and six, Salman made the most of his luck to put Pakistan in a dominant position.

Sajid is an excellent number 10. Looks very solid with plenty of shots in his locker.

It's reached that stage. Here comes the short stuff.

It is taking an inordinate amount of energy for Matthew Potts to get the ball anywhere above waist height but he is banging the ball in halfway down and hoping to draw a mistake from the batters.

Not this time. On go Pakistan.

In the old days, England would come out with defensive purpose in pursuit of 250 odd. They would defend and succumb. I'm looking forward to taking on the target on the front foot. Viva Bazball!

    Typical.

Brydon Carse produces a beauty that beats Sajid Khan on the outside edge.

The bowler heard a noise, Ben Stokes wants to review for caught behind but the technology is down.

    Yet more frustration for England.

Brydon Carse, who was struggling with a foot issue of some kind earlier, is back and charging in for England.

The runs keep coming for Pakistan, though, as Sajid Khan carves the ball away behind gully and backward point for four.

We're also playing old school cricket for the time being, Ben Stokes has been informed that DRS is down so the on-field decision is everything.

About an over too late for England.

It's been a great partnership for Pakistan this. Salman Ali Agha has developed this reputation of playing so well with the tailenders. He keeps a clear head and involves them in the partnership as well.

He doesn't say a lot from the non-striker's end. He allows them to breathe and does his own stuff, which is picking up the pace so well.

  20. New Zealand's lead builds against Indiapublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 17 October

A dramatic day is also coming towards its conclusion in Bengaluru.

Having dismissed India for 46 earlier, New Zealand have just lost their third wicket but they already lead by more than 100.

Devon Conway's 91 has built most of that but he became the latest man to fall - bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin.

Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell are now together with the score 166-3.
