Pakistan are proving there are runs in this pitch. No point panicking yet!

It's been a touch easier after lunch, but it's partly because of the way Pakistan have batted and England's desperation for wickets.

  3. drinks break

    Pak 102-4published at 29 overs

    Lead by 177

Time for drinks and it's been a good first hour after lunch for Pakistan.

They've lost just one wicket and added 59 runs.

  4. Pak 100-4published at 28.2 overs

    Lead by 175

Joe Root drives his first ball into the pitch and it turns sharply to take Saud Shakeel's outside edge.

The ball bounces short of Ollie Pope at second slip, though.

Next ball, Shakeel is straight onto the sweep. Thumping the ball in front of square for a boundary bring up Pakistan's 100.

    Punch and counter-punch.

As a Pakistani cricket fan, we all know how this is going to go. Stokes will come on to bowl, get some really important wickets and then go on to score the winning runs.

According to Cricviz's captaincy grid which looks at match-ups, England's best option to Saud Shakeel and Muhammad Rizwan is Ben Stokes. Get warm, skip...

  7. Pak 96-4published at 28 overs

    Lead by 171

After five dot balls, Muhammad Rizwan is able to go back and cut a slightly shorter ball from Shoaib Bashir through the off side for two.

We're going to have a bowling change, too. Joe Root replaces Jack Leach with England in need of a wicket - or six.

Since the lunch, Pakistan are 52-1 in 12 overs. This partnership has now put on 17 - all in singles in six overs.

I don't know whether it's because the ball has gone a little soft or the wicket has calmed down, the batting appears to be a little under control right now.

What is the England captain cooking up here?

He moves Ollie Pope deeper at silly point, a strip or two further away for Muhammad Rizwan.

For what reason? That's not entirely clear yet. Maybe just to get in the batter's head a bit as he tries to figure it out?!

Anyway, three come from Jack Leach's over as this Pakistan pair looked ever more settled.

England cut an appeal short after Shoaib Bashir hits Muhammad Rizwan on the front pad.

They know it's doing too much.

The spinner switches back to over the wicket to end the over, returning to that attacking line outside off but it's just a touch too short this time.

Not a great comparison, John. As a bowler, would you rather have 2-10 or 7-111? Wickets win you matches.

That average playing the sweep has just ticked up a fraction as Saud Shakeel coolly plays the shot again for a single off Jack Leach.

He and Muhammad Rizwan also show their quick feet in that over, taking the slightly more risky option of coming down the track but both do so expertly and without issue.

Saud Shakeel while playing the sweep shot in Tests:

    • Average - 192
    • Strike-rate - 226
    • Balls faced - 85
    • Dismissals - 1

Well, the Pakistan lead is already incredibly close to 170 so England had better get a move on...

Right now though, this is about as comfortable as either side have looked batting for quite some time - not that that takes much.

Saud Shakeel and Muhammad Rizwan are starting to find singles that bit easier to come by, though.

Anything around 170 and 200 runs in the second innings would serve Pakistan exceedingly well.

This pitch is not going to calm down and Sajid Khan will get even more help. Pakistan would be reminding themselves that only the knock of Ben Duckett was substantial in the England innings.

  18. Pak 82-4published at 23 overs

Just keep sweeping. That seems to be the Pakistan batters' plan at the moment.

Saud Shakeel mixes it up with a reverse sweep as well. The left-hander is a very good player of spin and he'll have to be out there today.

Why are ‘best figures’ always decided by the number of wickets? As a bowler surely you’d rather take 6-10 than 7-111. Discuss!

  20. Pak 78-4published at 22 overs

    Lead by 153

Shoaib Bashir gets five balls as new batter Muhammad Rizwan after a single for Saud Shakeel.

He attacks the right-hander from round the wicket and gets one to turn just past the inside edge.

Turning too much for lbw but this angle keeps that dismissal in play, along with bowled and bat-pad.
