I was having a chat with Yashasvi Jaiswal - when you go in the nets and you face the red ball, you have the urge to play the big shots because you are always working on your big shots but now you have to work on your defence. That's the mentality change for players when they switch from the shortest format of the game to the longest.

  2. Ind 197-3published at 55 overs

Chris Woakes offers a bit of width and Rishabh Pant crashes that through backward point for four.

A further single into mid-wicket sees him retain the strike and takes him to 46.

It looks flat and the England attack looks pretty impotent. However, you can't fault Stokes' creativity. Smith up to the stumps, a leg slip, catchers in six or seven different positions in front of the bat so far this morning. Shoaib Bashir needs to get into the game.

  4. Ind 192-3published at 54 overs

Three consecutive fours for KL Rahul to end Brydon Carse's over, with India starting to accelerate after a slow start.

Two shots through square, the latter a bit harder, either side of a cut through point.

Carse's over goes for 12, after the previous one cost 10.

If you look at the players and their body language, when they start the innings, there is a lot of energy but right now there is a drop because of the weather. If its not pleasant, you do get dehydrated and your recovery gets affected.

Say it quietly, but things are starting to look pretty flat out there.

  7. Ind 180-3published at 53 overs

Another driven four, through mid-off this time, as Pant dispatches the first delivery of Chris Woakes' over.

The India wicketkeeper then attempts one of his roly-poly ramp shots, but simply ends up falling over with the ball hitting his pads outside the line.

On slow over rates, you can't just penalise the fielding side with runs reductions, as that will just encourage the batting team to waste time. Needs to be thought through properly & not just a knee jerk reaction.

In the first half-hour this morning, India have attacked just 9% of the balls they faced and defended 47% of the time - their lowest and highest percentages respectively for a first session of the day in this series.

You are in the moment, you do feel the pain but when you are out there in the middle, you do want to do something for your country. Even if there is any pain, you try to focus on batting and mentally prepare yourself that you will get hit on your body. If you focus on the pain, you can't focus on what you have to do.

  11. Ind 174-3published at 52 overs

Jofra Archer comes off after four overs, with Brydon Carse taking his place.

A trio of twos to start, although the middle one comes via a no-ball, before KL Rahul drives nicely through mid-on for four.

Carse's next ball thuds hard into the India opener's thigh pad.

Just feels like England don’t really have any bowling plan other than hoping for Archer to produce something or a Stokes inspired wicket. India look very comfortable.

    Alex

I don't think England have enough threat in their bowling. Whereas India do. It will be the Indian batsman to make a mistake for England bowlers to get a wicket.

This session will determine how the game will progress. If England can pick up wickets, then they will be ahead in the game. If India don't lose wickets and go into lunch with more runs on the board, then they will be in charge.

  15. Ind 164-3published at 51 overs

Rishabh Pant pushes Chris Woakes' full delivery towards mid-off for the first run off the bat in 32 balls.

KL Rahul then sends the final delivery of the over through backward point for his first four of the day.

I was a little nervous ringing the bell this morning because everyone is looking at you and you don't want to mess up.

  17. Ind 159-3published at 50 overs

Ah, there's a run for India, but it comes from Jofra Archer sending the ball high over the head of KL Rahul.

His follow-up is also short but a better length and KL Rahul has to sway out of the way.

Rishabh Pant is such a strange cricketer. He's got such a good defence but he almost gets bored sometimes.

  19. Ind 158-2published at 49 overs

Conversation between Pant and Rahul in between balls can be heard from the stumps microphone with the former asking if he can leave balls that are being bowled in the channel that Woakes is bowling in.

Pant then goes and tries an elaborate reverse shot to Woakes' final ball, but doesn't get hold of it.

That's the third maiden in a row.

KL Rahul looks like a player who is setting himself up to bat until lunch tomorrow.
