Since the start of 2023, Liam Livingstone has been dismissed nine times by left-arm spin, averaging 19 while striking at 88. Axar Patel will be licking his lips at this match-up.

Jamie Smith took to Test cricket like a duck to water and it looks like it might be the same with the shortest format. As casual as you like he uses his feet to Varun Chakravarthy and deposits him into the stands with a towering six.

England need an innings from someone, it's a repeat of the first match at the moment. India's spinners have the wood over them.

Jamie Smith is off the mark with a single.

A brief drinks break just before the halfway point.

England debutant Jamie Smith makes his way out to the crease. What can he do?

Holed out. This is the wicket India wanted.

Jos Buttler drops back into his crease and attempts to heave Axar Patel over the boundary at mid-wicket but does not get it out of the meat of the bat so cannot quite obtain the elevation needed.

A simple catch for Tilak Varma in the deep.

There's almost an air of disappointment in the crowd at the MA Chidambaram Stadium as Buttler walks off. They were quite enjoying watching one of the IPL's superstars go about his business.

  8. Eng 74-3published at 9 overs

I think it's Varun Chakravarthy's quite front-on way of bowling that makes him tricky to pick. He's almost delivering it like a medium-pacer at times. A modern Anil Kumble if you like.

Liam Livingstone is still swinging from the hip and eventually connects, albeit off the toe his bat, and picks up four with a slog sweep.

Welcome to coverage of the second match in this T20 international series between India and Jos Buttler.

I'm really confused why England can't pick Varun Chakravarthy. He bowls majority of googlies out of the side of the hand and his variation is a non-spinning leggie.

Liam Livingstone is the new batter, he twice attempts to slog Ravi Bishnoi into next week but manages just a single down to deep square for his efforts.

Jos Buttler, who has 43 off 26 balls, picking and choosing his moments and content to work anything he cannot find a boundary off into the gaps.

Jos is a class apart isn’t he?! Astonishing hitting.

Who wishes they could strike a ball like Jos Buttler by the way??!!!

Cannot blame the smog this time, Harry.

The England batter is outfoxed by Varun Chakravarthy again as he manages to slide one through the gate from the back of his hand.

Brook played down the wrong line, attempting to get forward, and trudges off with a knowing smirk. He's been done like a kipper.

Jos Buttler vs Varun Chakravarthy in T20s before today: 69 runs, 37 balls, 3 dismissals, 23 average, 186 strike rate.

  14. Buttler survivespublished at 6.1 overs

I think if this was anyone but Jos Buttler India would not have burned a review.

The ball-tracking technology gives it as umpire's call.

The ferocity of Varun Chakravarthy's appeal probably persuaded Suryakumar Yadav to take a look.

  15. India reviewpublished at 6.1 overs

Joe Root has not played a T20 international since 2019, incidentally.

Anyway, we have a review from India after Varun Chakravarthy strikes Jos Buttler high on the pad.

This looks to be slipping down.

Arjun Singh: I mean, when it doesn’t work, it just looks pathetic. The length just wasn’t there for that Ben Duckett sweep. I think this series will underline England’s ridiculous decision to drop Joe Root from this T20 team.

  17. Eng 58-2published at 6 overs

Harry Brook and Jos Buttler able to pick Ravi Bishnoi's variations fairly comfortably thus far. Not as much smog around today it, ahem, seems.

They are content to knock the India leg-spinner into the gaps for the remainder of the over.

Initial signs are that this pitch is a beautiful pace with the ball coming on nicely from the seamers. England have only one front line spinner, which could be a problem when they come to bowl.

Jos Buttler is motoring here in Chennai.

He dismissively hammers leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi's first ball of the match straight down the ground and into the sightscreens.

We don't know how much it will spin in Chennai but we do that England did not play the spinners well in the first game. When you are batting in T20 you can't just take singles.

Harry Brook is England's best player of spin and he said playing spin in India in T20s is the hardest part of the game.

If he struggles it shows you the challenge.
