  2. Eng 368-4published at 89 overs

    Lead by 10

It's better from Ben Stokes in this over, who gets off strike and can lean on his bat at the non-striker's end.

Shubman Gill looks to be considering the new ball again but there's going to be at least one more over of spin first.

It is very rare you see a left-arm spinner bowling to a left handed batsman especially without a mid-off on a pitch that is not turning that much. It suggests that India do not think Ben Stokes is going to get out to the ball, they think he is going to play from his crease and perhaps even deploy the reverse sweep.

  4. Eng 363-4published at 88 overs

    Root 84, Stokes 6

India are flying through their overs in this double-spin period. It's a live-texter's nightmare.

Washington Sundar has Ben Stokes in his sights again...

  5. Eng 360-4published at 87 overs

    Lead by two

Gentle applause greets the single to Joe Root that takes him to 83 and England into a lead.

Before lunch the party stand was simmering. The trumpet was playing and chants being sung.

    Now it's tense.

When the ball starts turning for Ravindra Jadeja he becomes a total different beast. He does not have too many variations, he is very subtle - wicket to wicket - and in England when there is no spin, it sort of skids on rather than gripping on the surface and you can't just bowl up and down. He need to get the grip from surface and he can do that by bowling a bit slower.

  7. Eng 358-4published at 86 overs

    Scores level

England are level but it's not without a scare as Ravindra Jadeja appeals for lbw against Joe Root.

India only have one review left so don't risk it.

  8. Eng 357-4published at 85 overs

    Trail by one

Ben Stokes cannot get Washington Sundar away.

Even when he middles one it thuds into Sai Sudharsan is silly point who is leaping for cover and denies the England skipper runs.

Cricket is bonkers. India have spent all summer trying to get the ball changed. Now they have an old one, and a new one available, and they don't want it.

  10. Eng 357-4published at 84 overs

    Root 81, Stokes 3

Matt is right. Just when you think a match is swinging decisively one way the other side comes back.

A three to Root means England now trail by only one.

The amount the series has gone back and forth is incredible. When one team is dominating the other just finds a way to get back in it. It's just been a fantastic advert for Test cricket. Long may it continue.

    These are nervy moments.

Ben Stokes sets off for a foolish single and Joe Root is nearly run-out by the prowling Ravindra Jadeja as he fizzes in a throw from mid-wicket.

Stokes then attempts to heave Washington Sundar back down the ground to relieve some pressure but gets an inside edge.

Joe Root possesses the toolkit to deal with this threat through the air from Washington Sundar. He has a brilliant record against big drifting deliveries from spinners:

    • 0-3° of drift: Avg 58.47
    • 3°+: Avg 128.00
  15. Eng 352-4published at 82 overs

    Root 77, Stokes 2

Shubman Gill theatrically fiddles with the field as Ben Stokes faces up to Ravindra Jadeja.

Jadeja has dismissed Stokes seven times in Tests, remember.

Stokes is immediately edging but the ball goes wide of slip.

The art of the stumping is often overlooked and the combination of bowler and keeper should be appreciated more.

And here's Ben Stokes. You don't need me to remind you about his lack of runs and recent difficulties against spin.

It's the drift and I am amazed by the attempt at the shot when you know there is a little bit of drift. There was no spin and he's played for a ball that is going to spin back and it goes straight on, it's lovely piece of bowling, Washington Sundar sees Harry Brook going early and dragged it back a little early.
