England just need to avoid losing one of those 'from nowhere' dismissals and we might have a game here after all. Is it too early to talk about fastest ever double century by an English player?

  2. Eng 263-5published at 50 overs

Washington Sundar is round the wicket to the right-handers with the field largely set back. Jamie Smith and Harry Brook content to farm the strike for now.

    Five singles from the over.

Re the ‘Trott Vettori’ post (13:22) - a couple of real missed opportunities in Mark Watt and Eoin Morgan… Watt Vettori, Morgan Crawley

  4. Eng 258-5published at 49 overs

A big swish of the bat from Jamie Smith to a delivery from Prasidh Krishna, but it's a fresh-air shot. India are hoping for a more subdued start to this session and stymie England's momentum.

Prasidh Krishna is going to have to do something different. He's been the most expensive bowler because of all those short balls earlier.

  6. Eng 258-5published at 48.2 overs

Prasidh Krishna with the second over after lunch. He was boshed for 50 off five overs earlier. Will Jamie Smith and Harry Brook look to go after him again at some point?

A single then a couple to start.

In the last hour and a half before lunch, India just had it all wrong. It was all so easy for England, if you walked into the ground, you would've thought that England were on top.

  8. Eng 255-5published at 48 overs

A colleague is teasing me about the shoehorning of Associate cricket references into our live text commentary. Of course, I'm simply pointing out what a wonderfully globalised game this is.

Anyway, three more singles milked off Washington Sundar's over.

  9. Eng 252-5published at 47.2 overs

Jamie Smith rocks back and punches Washington Sundar behind point. Not quite enough to reach the boundary but England run three.

    Thanks, David.

Emilio Gay is already an international cricketer, as it happens. In fact he's currently in the Netherlands preparing to help Italy reach the T20 World Cup in a European qualifying tournament. Of course, if England come calling he can switch allegiances.

Right, the players are back out on the field at Edgbaston. Washington Sundar has the ball in hand and Jamie Smith is on strike.

I truly believe Emilio Gay deserves to start ahead of Zak Crawley. Watching Emilio’s recent performances, it’s clear he brings a fresh energy and solid technique that could really strengthen the batting lineup. Sometimes a new face with hunger and form can make all the difference in tough conditions. Personally, I feel Zak has struggled to consistently convert starts into big scores. It’s exciting to see young talent coming through, and I think Emilio could bring a positive spark to the team.

The pitch is flat, the ball's not doing anything, it's dead and there's no movement. England are just playing freely at the moment and can do whatever they want. If it continues like this in the afternoon session, England could get themselves into a strong position.

I just want to say that this is the best time I've ever had being an England cricket supporter. I know there is a strong chance we'll lose this match but there is this huge sensation that they are playing just to try and make me feel great as their fan! I keep telling my son just how lucky he is to follow this side right now. All those naysayers need to remember 1 in 17 and those terrible years in the 90s. I've said it before I'll say it again - this is my England team.

Jamie Smith's brilliant century has grabbed the limelight but Harry Brook has played his part in this England counterattack as well.

In the Bazball era, England have scored 150+ runs in a session on 30 occasions. Today’s morning session saw 172 runs with just 8.2% false shots. Under Stokes/McCullum England have never scored 150 in a session with a false shot percentage under 10%, until today. An astonishing session of cricket.

For the Oasis XI, how about five players in one song - Trott Vettorri Warne Singh Crawley?
