Summary

  1. Eng 239-6published at 58 overs

Gus Atkinson comes in ahead of Matty Potts - who's averaging 41.12 in the County Championship this season - and sees off the final three balls of the over.

A wicket maiden - he has figures of 2-9 with four maidens from his last ten overs.

Quicker, flatter and it didn't spin quite so much. It went by Woakes' outside edge and was a perfect delivery.

  3. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 57.3 overs

    Woakes b Jayasuriya 25 (Eng 239-6)

A repeat of the Brook dismissal!

This time it's Woakes who's removed by a turning Jayasuriya delivery.

The spin isn't perhaps quite as vicious as the ball that did for Brook, but once again it's clipping the top of off.

Jayasuriya has been superb since the tea interval.

What I love about Jamie Smith and Harry Brook is that they've got the classical shots. That was just a beautiful extra cover drive.

  5. Eng 239-5published at 57 overs

A first bowl for Kamindu Mendis and his part-time spin.

Smith knocks him for three through the covers, is brought back on strike from a Woakes single and hits a four in the same area.

    That's England into the lead.

Jack: Woakes and Smith have gone totally into their shell here. Not sure why if I’m honest, no need to be so defensive.

  7. Eng 231-5published at 56 overs

That was the only run of the over.

England now trail Sri Lanka by five.

  8. 50 runs

50 for Jamie Smithpublished at 55.2 overs

Smith guides Jayasuriya's delivery to mid-off and that's his fifty!

It comes from 81 deliveries, his third half century from four Tests.

England are often on the counter-attack. They seem to be trying to absorb pressure differently and you feel at some stage, one of them is going to have to go.

  10. Eng 230-5published at 55 overs

After five boundary-less overs, Woakes strikes a four from the final ball of Vishwa Fernando's over.

Through the covers, he loves that shot.

Jayasuriya has bowled well with 85% dot balls in his last six overs.

  12. Eng 225-5published at 54 overs

Another parsimonious over from Jayasuriya, with just a single for Smith backward of square.

This isn't exactly thrilling stuff, although given whenever England lose a flurry of wickets we get a flurry of messages complaining about Bazball, presumably there's a fair number of people out there who are absolutely delighted to see a bit of classic Test-match batting.

Maybe the ball has gone to the outfield and got wet. It looks like it's heavier and the ball isn't the way it should be to get that reverse. A wet ball wouldn't swing.

  14. Eng 224-5published at 53 overs

Smith pushes Vishwa Fernando to point, finally moving onto 47 after 11 balls.

I cannot believe how disparaging people are about the Brummy Botham. If Woakes batted in the top six consistently, rather than with the tail as he often does, his average would be much higher. He is a superbly talented batsman with a class technique. It’s just that much of his career has been at the same time as the legend that is Ben Stokes. Both are streets ahead of the likes of Curran.

Jayasuriya's action is very economical. It's such an easy action that's repeatable.

  17. Eng 222-5published at 52 overs

Jayasuriya is fit to continue, and Woakes ensures he can't complete another maiden, taking a single from his final ball to retain the strike.

As it's his bowling hand he won't be able to get a plaster on it. Some spinners don't use their thumb. I'm not sure whether Jayasuriya rests his thumb on the ball or not.

  19. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 51.2 overs

    Eng 221-5

Woakes strikes the ball back at Jayasuriya, and the Sri Lanka spinner splits open his thumb in his recovery.

While the bleeding digit is attended to, the players will take drinks.

  20. Eng 221-5published at 51 overs

Woakes takes a first-ball single off Vishwa Fernando, before Smith faces five dot balls.

He's now scoreless off the last nine deliveries.
