We saw a hint of turn from Bashir on day one, and then the killer ball that skidded along the ground.

But Jayasuriya hasn't made much happen, the Brook wicket really did come from nowhere.

John Petrie: There is no problem with Smith at 6 - he is a genuine all-rounder, but Woakes is more of an 8 so a long tail. In the post-Stokes era (whenever that is) we might need a bowling all-rounder at 7 - Sam Curran?

Fair point, John, although Woakes has a better Test batting average than Curran - 27.76 to 24.69.

Your point stands though, as Woakes is 35, and is likely to exit the stage prior to the 33-year-old Stokes.

  5. Eng 192-5published at 41 overs

Woakes has first runs of the innings, picking up a three in the off side off Asitha Fernando.

We've got some interesting cricket to come. Chris Woakes can bat but there isn't much else to come.

I don't think Jamie Smith will be deterred from playing his natural game.

Grandma Wilson update: not a peep. She will doubtless be onto the third bottle of fizz by now. She is not tech savvy so remains blissfully ignorant of her new-found celebrity. I will try and explain to her what the BBC Sport app is...

  9. Eng 187-5published at 40 overs

In comes Chris Woakes, promoted to seven in the absence of Ben Stokes.

He fends off the remainder of Jayasuriya's over.

It was a bit too full to be going back to, but it was made all the more potent by the fact that nothing else has turned all day.

    A beautiful bit of bowling.

That did turn! Harry Brook is looking at the pitch in the most accusing fashion.

He is stunned. That is huge, as far as Sri Lanka are concerned.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 39.1 overs

    Brook b Jayasuriya 56 (Eng 187-5)

Oh, where did that come from?

Vicious turn from Jayasuriya does for Harry Brook, toppling his stumps. It pitched roughly on leg and took the top of off.

The England batter looks utterly baffled, we haven't seen that amount of movement in this match.

  13. Eng 187-4published at 39 overs

More joy in the covers for Smith, picking up three with a drive off the bowling of Asitha Fernando.

It'd have gone for four but for the slow outfield.

  14. Eng 182-4published at 38 overs

Four more for Smith, driving Jayasuriya through the covers.

He moves to 27, Harry Brook is on 54 at the other end.

  15. Eng 177-4published at 37.1 overs

    England trail by 59

Prabath Jayasuriya takes the ball for the first over after tea.

Jamie Smith whips him down to long-on for a single.

The umpires are strolling out to the middle, so we should have the players soon.

A reminder that this session is set to run until 19:00 BST, with an extra half hour permitted to complete the 49 remaining overs scheduled for the day.

Given it's already rather dark out there I doubt we'll get all those overs, but you never know.

Right, let's talk about this six...

    (Enough of that - Ed).

Oh, fine. Well, regardless, what a privilege to be taking you through a period where they're not playing, but it's not raining.

Really stepping up in the world.

  19. Postpublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 22 August

Right, I need a breather as well.

It's time for me to hand you back to Mike Peter. He hasn't got any rain delays to update you on, but has he ever told you about his six?

England have done the job nicely. But I'm very impressed with Sri Lanka, it's been a good Test session and England still have their nose in front.
