Matt, Gibraltar: It might be a strange wish from an England fan, but I’d like to see the Sri Lankans put on some good totals in both innings - Test cricket needs this series to be competitive.

There is a lot of attention on Josh Hull as he bowls on the square during the break. All of England's assistant coaches - Marcus Trescothick, Paul Collingwood and Jeetan Patel - are there, along with new bowling consultant James Anderson. Even fourth umpire Martin Saggers, himself a Test seamer, has wandered over to have a look.

Olly Stone's wicket of Karunaratne was an emotional one for the Nottinghamshire seamer, making a return to Test cricket after a difficult few years of injury.

He took it with the first ball of the over, so lunch was called after that and he'll have five balls to bowl when the players are back out shortly.

Olly Stone was the last wicket to fall for 15, which gave Asitha Fernando a well-deserved fifth wicket. The seamer gets his name on the Lord's honours board for another impressive and resilient spell of bowling, backing up the six wickets that he took at Old Trafford.

England finished 427 all out, putting themselves in a very good position - which was strengthened by Stone and Chris Woakes removing both Sri Lankan openers before the lunch break, both Dimuth Karunaratne and Nishan Madushka making seven runs each.

Atkinson was astonishing, eventually falling for 118 from 115 balls with 14 fours and four sixes. He looked like he'd be at home batting at number three or four.

It needed something as equally special to get rid of him, which came from this catch by Milan Rathnayake.

One summer of Test match cricket, three Lord's honours boards with his name on.

    Gus Atkinson the all-rounder, everyone!

He joined Joe Root with England 216-6 and in a bit of a pickle, but by the time he was out they'd moved to 420. A phenomenal effort.

    Cheers, Tom.

Well, it's been the Gus Atkinson show this morning as England assert their dominance in this second Test. They've taken two Sri Lankan wickets into lunch and should be brimming with confidence despite the good batting conditions.

Let's have a little recap, before the players come back out.

The players are no doubt tucking into another one of those epic Lord's lunches.

My lunch is of a (much) more modest standard, but after that eventful session I'm ready to tuck into it anyway.

Time to leave you in the capable hands of Ffion Wynne.

Two drag-ons indicate that the pitch is getting slower and Sri Lanka are going to have to adapt to that. They do play on slow wickets at home so they will know how to combat it, it's just about putting some of those shots away.

    SL 32-2

    Right, that's lunch.

England end the first session of day two well on top, with Sri Lanka reeling a bit on 32-2 - still trailing by a hefty 395 runs.

All those hours of rehab become worth it, the celebration tells it all.

    Worrying for Sri Lanka.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 9.1 overs

    Karunaratne b Stone 7 (SL 32-2)

Another chop on! Olly Stone strikes in his second over back in Test cricket.

It is a similar dismissal to Nishan Madushka's. Back of a length, perhaps a touch wider, but Dimuth Karunaratne plays a wafty cut and chops back onto his stumps.

That is Stone's first Test wicket since June 2021.

A dismissive shot from Nissanka. Good batting, because you don't get many bad balls from Chris Woakes so you've got to make the most of them.

  19. SL 28-1published at 8.3 overs

    Shot.

Stand and deliver from Pathum Nissanka, who is offered a bit of width from Chris Woakes and dispatches the ball almost dismissively through the covers.

Robin, Coventry: As ever, England fielders miss the stumps for a run out. I genuinely can’t remember the last time England ran someone out with a direct hit.
