I know I'm stating the obvious here but what is Kamindu Mendis doing at number seven? He is batting far too low and he's by far been Sri Lanka's best batter across both Tests.

  2. SL 150-7published at 41 overs

Matthew Potts is bowling full to Prabath Jayasuriya to try and tempt him into the drive.

It very nearly works too as Jayasuriya - who has struggled with his timing - squirts one skywards towards Shoaib Bashir at point, but the ball lands just short.

  3. SL 150-7published at 40 overs

Shoaib Bashir is bowling over the wicket as he aims for those footmarks outside Kamindu Mendis' off stump. There is only a bit of gentle turn so far though.

Half an hour into this session and it has been fairly tepid so far, with Sri Lanka digging in well. A belated show of fight.

Matthew Potts, despite pulling up the previous over, is fine to continue.

Sometimes you can just roll your ankle a little bit and it's one that you can just run off. He's staying on the field, which is a good sign.

You usually know if it's a really bad one.

Kamindu Mendis has a very simple game, he looks so composed.

He is solid in defence, acknowledging the good balls but also saying, well, I'm seeing it pretty well here, too.

  6. SL 150-7published at 39 overs

The sun we have basked in has now disappeared behind some moody grey clouds, though nothing that should produce the wet stuff. The floodlights will likely kick in soon though.

Hmm, has Potts tweaked something? He looked a little uncomfortable after bowling there. It looks like he will be ok - for now.

I really liked the way Shoaib Bashir bowled at Edgbaston. He's obviously very tall and gets over the ball but he can flight it as well.

  8. SL 145-7published at 38 overs

    Trail by 282

Slip, leg slip and short leg in for Prabath Jayasuriya, who has looked every inch the tailender so far.

That is a decent shot though, Jayasuriya helping himself to two runs with a drive through cover. We haven't seen much of that so far.

A tidy over first up from Shoaib Bashir though.

  9. Postpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 30 August

Time for some spin. Shoaib Bashir is chucked the ball.

  10. SL 142-7published at 37 overs

Matthew Potts is bowling beautifully. Prabath Jayasuriya isn't sure whether to go forwards or backwards, nervously prodding at the ball outside off stump.

He is squared up with the final delivery of the over and the ball squirts past backward point for a single to keep strike.

Olly Stone is bowling quick here.

  12. SL 142-7published at 36 overs

Olly Stone is bowling around the wicket and spearing it in to Kamindu Mendis, who is looking the most comfortable of all the Sri Lanka batters so far.

  13. SL 141-7published at 35 overs

    Trail by 286

Matthew Potts squares up Prabath Jayasuriya again with a delivery that is too good to snare the edge. Jayasuriya is fumbling his way through his innings so far.

Potts then Kamindu Mendis some width and he gleefully takes advantage, clattering the ball through gully for four.

A ripple of applause emanates from the contented post-tea Lord's crowd.

  14. SL 136-7published at 34 overs

There are 40 overs remaining in the day so we should get an extra 30 minutes or so in.

Seven runs off the over, including four byes as Kamindu Mendis misses his attempted pull and the ball clips his thigh pad and races down to the boundary.

The towering figure of Josh Hull is out on the field as sub fielder for Chris Woakes. Though Woakes is doing some stretching on the boundary and looks ready to come back on.

    Thanks, Ffion.

What will this evening session bring?

Sri Lanka have shown little fight so far. Three quick wickets and England will have a decision to make with the follow-on.

  16. Postpublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 30 August

Kamindu Mendis, who surely won't be batting at number seven for long, has the potential to frustrate England for a while longer but Sri Lanka's lower order doesn't offer much.

It's going to take something very special from them to survive the day.

To see how the final session unfolds, here's Tom Mallows.

  17. Postpublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 30 August

Dinesh Chandimal then fell into the trap and clipped a Gus Atkinson delivery straight Dan Lawrence at square leg to leave Sri Lanka reeling on 87-6.

  18. Postpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 30 August

Matthew Potts' double-wicket maiden then completely changed the course of the innings, breaking the resilience of Angelo Mathews before the captain Dhananjaya de Silva departed without scoring.

  19. Postpublished at 15:48 British Summer Time 30 August

Well, England are rewarded for another impressively consistent bowling display.

Yes, some poor Sri Lanka dismissals included, but they mostly resulted from the pressure that was built.

After getting rid of both openers before lunch, Pathum Nissanka was the first to fall after the break, in complete disbelief as he fell for the leg side trap for 12.

Olly Stone has been really impressive. I really like the way he has attacked the stumps.
