18 runs have been scored from the past 14 overs.
Kamindu Mendis is farming the strike very well, giving Lahiru Kumara just the one delivery to survive from Joe Root.
The sun has emerged from behind the clouds, with Lord's again looking a picture.

Again, Kamindu Mendis has been head and shoulders above the rest of the batting order.

Great batting conditions and yet Sri Lanka are so far behind the game and it all comes down to the toss.
They just gifted England a head start, allowed them to pile on the runs and then, no matter what the pitch or the ball is doing, scoreboard pressure will always make you do funny things.

Kumara looks like he's been told by his batting partner to just hang in there.
"You're batting for me!"
Lahiru Kumara is taking up what is now known as the 'Prabath Jayasuriya role'. He is yet to get off the mark from eight deliveries.
But as long as he stays there it gives Kamindu Mendis - who is the only Sri Lanka to put up sustained resistance - the chance to dig his side out of a very big hole.

There are promising signs for the spinners. For every ball that spins, the Sri Lankan captain will be thinking, oh dear!
Ooh, Joe Root lands one right in the footmarks and it jags away sharply from Kamindu Mendis and through to Smith.
That will give Root some encouragement, as will this excellent delivery from Shoaib Bashir to dismiss Prabath Jayasuriya a few moments ago.

Joe Root is usually a pretty good partnership-breaker.
He has been given the nod.
Golden arm enters the fray, no doubt keen to show Gus Atkinson who the REAL all-rounder is.
Joe Root warming up klaxon!
Has he been given the nod or sending a hint to his skipper?

Kamindu Mendis and Asitha Fernando have been the bright sparks for Sri Lanka in both Tests, they've really stood out.

Lahiru Kumara is the new batter and after a sleepy start to this session England now have an opportunity to polish off this innings.
Kamindu Mendis farms the strike to give Kumara just the one ball to face from Chris Woakes, which he duly leaves.

That's just beautiful bowling.
A little bit slower, a little bit more flight and it's through the gate. Shoaib Bashir must've seen an indication that Jayasuriya was coming towards him.
He wasn't scoring but he was doing his job, holding up an end for Kamindu Mendis. That's infuriating for the "in" batter, seeing a shot like that.
Jayasuriya b Bashir 8 (SL 153-8)
Lovely delivery!
Prabath Jayasuriya has shown next to no intent but suddenly decides to go on the charge. Shoaib Bashir reads it though and just drops it in a little bit wide with a touch more flight. The ball grips and turns before escaping through the gate and onto the stumps.
Jayasuriya departs for a 46-ball eight.

20 balls since Jayasuriya's last run...

There is just enough there for the spinner, and that takes me back to the toss again. If England were made to bat last on this pitch, Prabath Jayasuriya would've been right in the game.
Now England are trying to get the ball changed, but Paul Reiffel merely snips off a bit of loose seam with some scissors and tosses it back to Ollie Pope, no doubt telling him to get on with it.
Just the single off Chris Woakes' latest over.

The bowlers have been tremendous and Ollie Pope has just manoeuvred his pieces brilliantly. The two wickets caught at leg slip were great tactics.
Sri Lanka have dug in here, they are playing for time as much as runs.
As the game grinds to a halt, England can at least take some encouragement from the fact Shoaib Bashir is starting to get some turn, while another delivery keeps very low.
Matthew Potts' spell is over as Chris Woakes enters the fray.
