That was not a good ball and Atkinson knows it.

  2. SL 83-3published at 20 overs

Nicely guided for four by Angelo Mathews, expertly playing the ball late through the slips.

And while that was a good shot from a decent ball, it's followed by some short, wide filth outside off stump from Atkinson that Dinesh Chandimal punishes to the ropes with aplomb.

Good recovery from Sri Lanka here.

  3. SL 72-3published at 19 overs

    Edged... and drops short!

Matthew Potts creates the chance but it bounces in front of Ben Duckett at third slip. Potts has his head in his hands, while Chandimal has a word with himself about his discipline outside the off stump.

  4. SL 69-3published at 18 overs

Bit of fortune for Dinesh Chandimal, as there's the first sign of uneven bounce with Atkinson's delivery scooting along the ground.

He got a similar one off Shoaib Bashir at Old Trafford so he's due a bit of luck.

Ex-Sri Lanka all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

The game does ebb and flow. The batting conditions won't get any better so Sri Lanka need to take advantage to stay in the game.

But England have their tails up after taking those three wickets, so they are making it hard for these two batters.

  6. SL 61-3published at 17 overs

Dinesh Chandimal negotiates a maiden from Matthew Potts, as the experienced Sri Lanka duo settle in after they were once again let down by Sri Lanka's top order.

6-3, 1-2 and 35-3 isn't a great return for the three innings they've had so far.

Tom, Cambridge: First West Indies' inexperience and now Sri Lanka's inconsistency, is this ideal for England's build up to the Ashes next year? Surely we need some tougher tests to really develop players coming through.

  8. SL 61-3published at 16 overs

Gloriously driven for four by Dinesh Chandimal, as Chris Woakes' diving effort is in vain with replays showing his hand was touching the boundary sponge as he retrieved the ball.

A cover drive that Gus Atkinson would be proud of...

A four-man bowling attack is hard work. And if you then take the spinner down the seamers who are doing a job for you will have to have a rethink.

That's why the all-rounder is the most coveted place in a cricket team as it enables one of your bowlers to have an off day.

  10. SL 56-3published at 15 overs

Chandimal withstands the pain to clip a couple down to fine leg.

The Lord's crowd has settled for the afternoon, with slightly fewer fireworks to celebrate compared to Gus Atkinson's century. And also probably has something to do with the amount of food being consumed.

  11. ouch!

    SL 54-3published at 14.1 overs

    Oooh.

Dinesh Chandimal got whacked on the thumb by Mark Wood at Old Trafford and, typically, he gets hit by Matthew Potts first ball in a similar place.

He'll be grateful for Potts' slightly more friendly pace. I guess once you've been hit by Mark Wood, everything else just feels like cotton wool.

Speaking of, here is the third.

    Pathum Nissanka couldn't believe it.

  13. SL 54-3published at 14 overs

    Oh, that'll do.

An authoritative pull shot from Angelo Mathews races to the ropes. There are plenty of runs in this pitch if Sri Lanka can bat properly.

That's a pretty big "if" after the first three wickets.

  14. SL 45-3published at 13 overs

Angelo Mathews successfully negotiates a Chris Woakes maiden.

It's just got a little cloudier at Lord's but there's no rain expected. Sri Lanka will be hoping it won't have too much of an impact on the ball.

  15. SL 45-3published at 12 overs

Lovely timing from Angelo Mathews, as Olly Stone again drifts on to the pads but it results in a boundary this time instead of a wicket.

    Can't have it all.

  16. How's stat?!published at 13:51 British Summer Time 30 August

    Andy Zaltzman
    Statistician on Test Match Special

Chris Woakes has now 29 wickets at Lord's in his seventh match at an average of 12.4.

The only player to take 20 wickets or more at Lord's at a lower average is Glenn McGrath, who has 26 wickets in three matches at an average of 11.5, taking a five-for in each match.

I fear a little bit for Sri Lanka.

There will always a little bit for the seamers at Lord's, so they will have to fight really hard to get close to England's total.

  18. SL 36-3published at 11 overs

Watching the replay of that wicket and Pathum Nissanka's reaction - it was as if he didn't have a clue that Potts was stationed there. He had to really drag himself away from the crease in complete disbelief at what he'd done.

Angelo Mathews has rescued Sri Lanka on many occasions in his long career, and he's being asked to do it again.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 10 overs

    Nissanka c Potts b Stone 12 (SL 35-3)

Olly Stone has his second as Pathum Nissanka falls for the leg-side trap!

Oh, Nissanka is furious. It's on his pads, he clips it nicely but Matthew Potts is stationed perfectly at leg slip and he takes a sharp catch.

Sri Lanka fall further and further into trouble as their top order fails again.
