If Buttler and Brook can provide a partnership half as entertaining as Bethell and Root's, we're in for some fun.

For now, though, the spinners are bowling nicely in tandem.

England's wicketkeeper sends the last ball of the over to mid-wicket but can't take a run.

We reach the halfway stage - South Africa were 120-3 at this point but then accelerated dramatically.

To see if England can do the same, here's Ffion Wynne.

Joe Root is known for his elegance and technical ability but that shot was neither.

He is walking off very slowly.

Joe Root got nowhere near it. That was not a good shot - he will not want to see that again.

    Two blows in quick succession.

There goes England's other settled batter!

Keshav Mahraj comes back into the attack with Jacob Bethell back in the pavilion, and he removes Joe Root with his fifth delivery.

An ugly shot from Root, advancing down the pitch and attempting to swipe into the leg side.

Ryan Rickelton had plenty of time to take off the bails.

Normally left-handers put that shot away no problem but it went straight to the fielder.

    Slightly unlucky.

Jacob Bethell did not decide whether to go up and over or slam it into the ground. He got the ball selection right but just lacked that elevation over the fielder.

That innings reminds everyone why he is in this side.

Here comes the skipper Harry Brook.

He gets off the mark immediately with a single into the covers before Dewald Brevis gets back in the action, diving well at backward point.to stop a late cut from Joe Root.

What is fascinating about Joe Root is how he goes through the gears. He has been in his crease for most of his innings but now he wants to accelerate, he just skips down the pitch.

He doesn't lose shape. He finds ways to be aggressive in a low-risk way.

It will be interesting to see if England can sustain an onslaught. There is still a strong middle order to come - Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Will Jacks.

To get to 250 with some of those batters still in the engine, then they can get the job done with the firepower they posses.

Jacob Bethell is so dominant in the way he plays. He has not hunkered down. He knows England need to be aggressive and that fits in his game plan.
