England players do not play domestic 50-over games which means they are learning on the job. You cannot use that as an excuse, you have to manage the situation better.

The hard thing for any player is getting the balance right when you have to make the decisions yourself. In T20, you have to go and whack. It is set out for you. Whereas in 50-over, you control the tempo and that is what the modern player finds hard.

England have won their last four ODI matches here at Lord's.

All four wins have come batting first and by significant margins, of 52 runs, 100 runs (twice) and 186 runs.

England's batters may have struggled at Headingley, but one former international rolled back the years in London last night.

Ravi Bopara, at 40 years of age, smashed an unbeaten 105 from 46 deliveries at Northamptonshire beat Surrey in the T20 Blast quarter-finals at The Oval.

It's only a short trip across the Thames to Lord's - maybe England could have stuffed him in a cab...

The way Harry Brook spoke, it was as if Saqib Mahmood would have come in ahead of Sonny Baker anyway at Headingley if it had not been for the Hundred final. So it was a scheduling issue.

Then you look at how Sonny bowled and you wonder whether that does play into it. Ultimately, Saqib Mahmood is higher up in the pecking order and he will look to take advantage of whatever is on offer here.

The hover cover is still looming rather ominously behind the bowler's run-ups, but the sun is shining at Lord's.

That cloud that was sitting south of the ground has passed on.

Jofra Archer is out in his kit, sending down a few looseners on the edge of the square.

  6. 'There are no excuses'published at 12:58 British Summer Time 4 September

England opener Jamie Smith on the first ODI at Headingley: "It wasn't an ideal start for us and it is not the way we want to go out ODI cricket. We have spoken about that as a team and we are looking to bounce back today."

On how to explain the loss: "It is a hard one to put your finger on. 130 is never enough so as a batting unit we needed to put more pressure on and get a more competitive score."

On the importance of preparation: "We have spoken about how the team has not had long together. We are a new team and this in only our fourth international with Harry Brook as captain. You need more training time to build more relationships but everyone has played a lot of cricket so there are no excuses."

On the Hundred being so close: "It is not ideal. You can't be together as a side for long before it. As a side you need more preparation but everyone should know there roles and be able to go and perform them."

On how to respond: "There is a little bit of discussion but it is not in a meeting form. We lean on positive experiences in the past. Being bowled out for 130 is not something that happens often, it is quite a one off for this side There is a lot of talent here and we know we can post big scores."

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma: "I would have bowled as well considering the conditions and the wicket overhead. We will just have to do a job with the bat and assess the conditions as best we can and set our mark there.

"Tony de Zorzi misses out and Matthew Breetzke comes in. Wiaan Mulder also misses out due to illness so Senuran Muthusamy comes in for him.

"This format is not too far from what we speak about as a team. Today is another important day for us to keep getting better as a team. But also keeping things simple is important.

"We always speak about getting here and adapting our skills to the conditions. Nothing really changes there. We expect them to come at us today but we will put our best foot forward."

England captain Harry Brook: "We'll hope that there's a bit in the pitch early on.

"We've got to put the first game behind us. It's a new day, and it feels like the series starts today for us. We want to go out there and do the things that we always talk about.

"It's just about the basics. We want to put their bowlers under pressure with the bat and keep looking to take wickets with the ball. Saqib Mahmood comes in for Sonny Baker.

"It's nothing against Sonny, we think it's the right decision on this ground, Saqib is a very smart bowler in these conditions."

  10. England win the toss and bowlpublished at 12:47 British Summer Time 4 September

Having been humbled after being put in on Tuesday, England captain Harry Brook has decided he's going to have a bowl after winning today's toss.

Saqib Mahmood returns to the home side's line-up after Sonny Baker went for 0-76 on Tuesday, the most expensive figures by an England bowler on ODI debut.

    So what's our forecast?

If we're likely to see any breaks it's during the early part of the afternoon - we should be fine to get a game in.

A dark cloud has emerged to the south of the ground - we'll see what that brings.

There's been rain at Lord's in the hours before today's game, but the sun has come out for now in London.

There has been a slight delay to proceedings - we'll have a toss at 12:45 BST and play will start 15 minutes late at 13:15.

The covers are off and both sides are out warming up - variations of football on both halves out the outfield.
