'Fine piece of bowling!' - Ngidi bowls Buttler

  1. Eng 66-2published at 13 overs

Jacob Bethell, in a pretty lean run of form with the bat, comes to the crease at number four - he was at six at Headingley behind Harry Brook and Jos Buttler, so this is an interesting move.

He gets a bat on Mahraj's last delivery, but can't get off the mark.

That is not an innings that Ben Duckett will look back on with any pleasure whatsoever.

Hmm, so should Ben Duckett try it again, Rufus?

Well, he does and gets bowled by Keshav Maharaj, hitting half way down middle stump.

England didn’t play a single sweep or reverse sweep against Keshav Maharaj in the first ODI. Today they have attempted three in his first over.

Another Corbin Bosch over, another one-run over.

The South Africa seamer, who at 30 is only playing in his fifth ODI, is bowling superbly.

Ben Duckett has been doing what we have been asking of this England side and he is not panicking and not playing one way.

It is not going his way but he is playing his role with Joe Root in this partnership.

A direct hit there would have had Ben Duckett in real trouble.

  8. Eng 62-1published at 11 over

Spin straight out of the powerplay as Keshav Maharaj replaces Lungi Ngidi at the Pavilion End.

Adil Rashid picked up the wickets of Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma in overs 15 and 19 of the South Africa innings with the pavilion at his back, can the world's number one ODI bowler have a similar impact?

The visitors almost get a wicket from the over, although it wouldn't have gone to Maharaj - Ben Duckett hurries through a three off a reverse sweep and just makes his crease off the last run.

The umpires take a look, and confirm he's home.

Corbin Bosch fluctuates the speed of his bowling. He bowls higher and lower eighties but they are all pace-on deliveries.

He does have a slightly inconsistent action which makes him difficult to find your rhythm against.

  11. Eng 56-1published at 10 overs

Once again, England take just one run off Corbin Bosch's over as Ben Duckett hurries through a single.

We've come to the end of the powerplay - South Africa were 51-0 at this stage.

A slight cause for concern - England have scored just seven runs off the last three overs.

Lungi Ngidi can use the slope here to try and nick Ben Duckett off or make him get caught in the circle.

Duckett is not somebody who pumps you down the ground so you can aim to be a little bit fuller.

  13. Eng 55-1published at 9 overs

Ah, it's a change of ends for Lungi Ngidi as he replaces Nandre Burger at the Pavilion End, going for five runs.

England's current required run-rate is 6.73 runs an over - they started at 6.62.

This has got the feeling of a partnership that can make a mark and leave a platform for others to come in and capitalise on.

Joe Root will not be thinking too far ahead yet. It does feel like England need a vintage innings from him to make this total.

  16. Eng 50-1published at 8 overs

A first change for South Africa as Corbin Bosch replaces Lungi Ngidi at the Nursery End.

Just one leg-bye off his opening opener, with Joe Root bringing up England's 50 from 45 balls.

Joe Root has hit three or more boundaries in an over 12 times in his ODI career, two of them coming today (fourth over vs Ngidi, seventh over vs Burger).

By reaching 31 (and counting), Joe Root has overtaken Pakistan's Salim Malik on the all-time ODI run-scorers' list today. Reaching 31 takes him to 45th place with 7,171 runs - still a fair bit short of Sachin Tendulkar at the summit (18,426).

Trademark from Joe Root. He is able to use that angle from the left-handers and times it perfectly.

The fielder up the slope had no chance.

Root hits Burger for three consecutive fours through the offside

Joe Root is looking in good touch today.

He picks up his fifth, sixth and seventh fours from consecutive Nandre Burger deliveries, driving through the covers then twice sending the ball skipping through point.

15 runs off the over for him, taking him to 31 from 27 deliveries.
