We aren't used to seeing this lack of boundaries. India have really upped their strike rate and scoring rate, as a team, over the last couple of years. They do play on good wickets out in India now.

The India coach looks really animated. He doesn't look very happy at the moment and I'm pretty sure I know why!

  2. Ind 79-2published at 15 overs

    27 needed from 30 balls

Back to the plan, five runs from Nashra Sandhu's final over.

She finishes with figures of 0-21.

My colleague informs that Steady Eddie might refer to a Eddie Clarence Murray, who played Major League Baseball between 1977-97.

Would his existence have permeated the consciousness of the British public though? I deem it unlikely...

Surely Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues are going to have a bit of a dip now and try to finish this game as quickly as possible.

There are six overs left, so if they can finish it in three overs then at least it will help their net run rate. So you would like to think that they are going to have a bit of a go...

  4. Ind 74-2published at 14 overs

    32 needed from 36 balls

An absolute score-fest as India take a whole seven runs off Omaima.

Harmanpreet manages to take two through point, which seems against the spirit of things.

Meanwhile I spent part of the over researching the origin of the phrase Steady Eddie - inconclusive results.

  5. Ind 67-2published at 13 overs

    39 needed from 42 balls

Back to the Steady Eddie tactics.

Five singles from Sadia Iqbal's over - India's required run-rate from here is 5.57, they've been going at 5.15.

  6. Ind 62-2published at 12 overs

    44 needed from 48 balls

    Here's the captain.

Harmanpreet Kaur gets off the mark by nudging Omaima through square leg.

This shot is a strength of Shafali Verma's - against an off-spinner, turning into her and really trying to target that leg side.

She would have been wanting that to go all the way, but there are slightly bigger boundaries here and she just didn't get enough of it.

It was a great catch from Aliya Riaz.

Well, that's where impetus gets you!

Omaima Sohail returns and Shafali Verma smacks her opening off-break to the mid-wicket boundary with a mighty slog sweep.

She goes again four balls later and picks out Aliya Riaz at long-on, who barely has to move to take the catch, dropping to her knees as she does so.

    A crucial wicket for Pakistan.

It seems inexplicable really. It is clear that the longer this takes India, the more must-win the game against Australia becomes.

You don't want to be in that position really because Australia are obviously really good.

  10. Ind 55-1published at 11 overs

    51 needed from 54 balls

The eeking it out strategy continues after the interval, with five singles from Nashra Sandhu's third over.

    Humdrum-ing their way to victory.

India are playing in a way that actually says they don't mind that they are going to have to beat Australia - but it is a really tough thing to do for any side in this competition.

They are 50-1 so I think they should try and have a bit of a go, shouldn't they? It will be really interesting to see how India go about this now. Their head coach was striding out with some purpose during the drinks break just now.

  12. Ind 50-1published at 10 overs

A second boundary for Shafali Verma, crashing Tuba Hassan through mid-off.

A final ball single takes India to the half-century mark and the drinks break.

We have been talking about Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, and how they went about it quite uncharacteristically in the powerplay.

Their average in 2021 was 7.1 runs per over in the powerplay. In 2024, it has been 8.4 runs per over and their average in the powerplay has been 50-1.

So today has gone against everything that they have been trying to do leading up to this World Cup.

  14. Ind 42-1published at 9 overs

India just keep eeking their way to their target, working Nashra Sandhu for five singles.

The truth is this is probably enough, India only require a touch more acceleration to make it home, but it won't improve their net run-rate much after they were shellacked against New Zealand.

Only two qualify from the group, which also contains defending champions Australia.

    Meanwhile Pakistan need wickets...

A quieter remainder of the over, as Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues take a couple of singles off the Pakistan leggie.

    There's that boundary!

It only took 43 deliveries, but a ball finally reaches the ropes.

A drag-down from Tuba Hassan and Shafali Verma dispatches through mid-wicket.

India will fancy their chances but they need to get a move on - especially if they want to boost their net run-rate.

India have had a really sluggish start. Maybe they are just wanting to make sure that they get their first win in this tournament, but I'm not sure that's how I would have wanted to go about it...

Verma is just jogging that first run. We saw Nida Dar doing it on a couple of occasions, she actually ran that second run on the throw because they are really big boundaries. Having said that, Verma's run isn't really with intent.

  19. Ind 31-1published at 7 overs

Pakistan continue to unleash their battery of spinners, as Nashra Sandhu steps up.

Shafali Verma whips her to the square leg boundary but good work on the ropes stops India picking up their first four.

  20. Ind 25-1published at 6 overs

And that's the powerplay done - with just three further runs added to the India total.

Omaima Sohail's first over isn't the most consistent, but India can't get her off-breaks away.

Indeed, India have failed to hit a boundary in these first six overs - and now the fielders go back.
