  1. Bad light stops play at Edgbastonpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Warks 337 & 270 v Somerset 239 & 206-4

With Alex Davies turning to Michael Rae to stop the carnage, the umpires take the players off for bad light.

It's not officially over, but you'd think that would be that for this match.

  2. 50 runs

50 for James Rewpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Warks 337 & 270 v Somerset 239 & 206-4

An outside edge to third man gives James Rew a ninth four before he swings Rob Yates into the Hollies Stand for six.

He moves to 43 from just 21 balls and Somerset are now more than halfway to their target. If only there were a few more overs and brighter skies.

Rew then launches Yates once again into the Hollies and moves to an electrifying 23-ball half-century.

    That's his seventh first-class fifty.

He ends the over with a 10th four to move to 55 off 24 balls.

  3. WICKET Brown b Snater 54published at 16:52 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Hants 390-5 v Essex 438-8d

    Shane SnaterImage source, Rex Features

Shane Snater has found some movement and some low bounce out of nowhere!

A wonderful, unplayable, ball into the stumps.

No James Vince at No.7 as expected, but his namesake Fuller heads out instead. He's rapped on the pads first ball but the ball would have been going over the stumps.

  4. Rew in a hurrypublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Warks 337 & 270 v Somerset 239 & 183-4

Umpires Alex Wharf and Steve O'Shaughnessy come together to talk light.

After a lengthy chat we play on. For now.

James Rew smacks Jacob Bethell through the legside for his seventh four, and then unfurls a reverse sweep to move to 33 from just 19 balls.

    More discussions about the light.

Rob Yates is on as the umpires decide it's too gloomy for any pace.

  5. Middlesex need 111 in 25 overspublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Middlesex 264 & 0-0 Northants 207 & 167

The equation is simple: 111 in 25 overs with no rain expected.

The problems for Middlesex are that light could become an issue and that the ball is moving in the air.

Apart from those slight issues the hosts are favourites from this point. Just.

  6. James Rew hits five successive fourspublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Warks 337 & 270 v Somerset 239 & 174-4

A thick edge to third man caps back-to-back boundaries for the swashbuckling James Rew off OHD.

And a third consecutive four after an off drive through the covers.

Make that four with a lovely on drive back past the bowler.

No, that's five straight boundaries and the runs required tally ducks under 200.

  7. NORTHANTS ALL OUT FOR 167published at 16:45 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Middlesex 264 Northants 207 & 167

Roland-Jones with another walks with 6-58 after finishing off the Northants innings.

A beauty just nicks the bat of Justin Broad and is grabbed by Jack Davies, dismissing him for 30 and setting Middlesex a target of 111 in 25 overs.

It should be doable but the ball is swinging.

  8. WICKET Prest c Harmer b Critchley 156published at 16:44 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Hants 380-4 v Essex 438-8d

Tom Prest comes down the track and holes out to long off.

A subdued end to a sublime personal best.

Essex are back in the hunt for a second bowling point.

  9. 50 runs

for Ben Brownpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Hants 375-3 v Essex 438-8d

    Ben BrownImage source, Rex Features

Ben Brown has quietly gone about his business around Tom Prest.

His fifty comes in 52 balls and seen a fully repertoire of jabby pulls and cuts.

  10. Postpublished at 16:42 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Warks 337 & 270 v Somerset 239 & 154-4

James Rew is another batter who likes to score quickly and hoiks Jacob Bethell through the leg side for four.

Bethell almost gets his revenge as Rew makes room to carve the next ball through the offside but misses completely and the ball whistles narrowly past his off stump.

Strange batting in the context of the game.

We are losing the light a little here. If they go off for bad light, as they did late on day two, that will be that.

    Oliver Hannon-Dalby enters the fray.

  11. Ten-wicket haul for Roland-Jonespublished at 16:41 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Middlesex 264 Northants 207 & 166-9

    Toby Roland-JonesImage source, Rex Feat

That is the sixth 10-wicket haul of Toby Roland-Jones's first class career but you would bet he would gladly trade in a couple of them for a Middlesex win here.

The 36-year-old has done what does with a swinging ball to give his side hope of pulling off a victory which seemed wildly optimistic after Saturday was wiped out by rain.

Roland-Jones, who took eight wickets on Test debut against South Africa in a golden summer back in 2017, has been the pick of the Middlesex attack.

Five for 49 in the first innings and now five for 58 in the second.

  12. Postpublished at 16:40 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

In this time of T20 Blast and Bazball, doesn't it make a nice change to read a story about a batsman facing 137 balls for 0 not out?

It's true - you can read all about it by clicking here.

  13. wicket

    WICKET Leech lbw b Roland-Jones 8published at 16:39 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Middlesex 264 Northants 207 & 166-9

That has swung a mile and it is 10 in the match for the Middlesex skipper.

It looked like it might have done a bit too much but hit Leech on the back pad and was probably clipping leg stump.

One more needed to set up an exciting chase.

  14. Postpublished at 16:38 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Hants 369-3 v Essex 438-8d

After 52 runs in four overs - including 14 and 19 off Simon Harmer - the ball has been deformed out of shape. So that is getting changed.

Tom Prest is putting on an absolute batting clinic.

It is just like watching James Vince at a similar age.

  15. Postpublished at 16:36 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Middlesex 264 Northants 207 & 166-8

Tom Helm is consistently beating the edge of the Dominic Leech's bat but needs to graze it.

He was value for a maiden there but it's questionable how valuable that is in the wider scheme.

The lead is up to 109 and Toby Roland-Jones continues to probe from the other end. Middlesex need a wicket.

  16. 150 runs

for Tom Prestpublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Hants 368-3 v Essex 438-8d

Another bonus point for Hampshire - that's five for them, and five for Essex in this match.

Full batting points are still on the table for the hosts. They'd need to go at just under six runs over to get to 450 by 110 overs.

    Tom Prest fancies it.

He's just bashed two sixes - the first over brought up a century partnership with Ben Brown, the second took him to 150.

  17. GLOUCS DRAW WITH LEICSpublished at 16:34 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Gloucestershire 544-4 dec v Leicestershire 402 & 304-5

Rain has the final word in a game that will be chiefly remembered for some remarkable batting.

Following Ian Holland's 104 in Leicestershire's first innings, Ben Charlesworth and James Bracey led the Gloucestershire reply with a stand of 290 on the third day.

Charlesworth made 210 and Bracey hit an unbeaten 207 to take his seasonal total to 970 runs.

The visitors added 257 to their overnight 41-0 on the final day with Rishi Patel (75) and Holland (56) putting on 142 for the first wicket and Peter Handscomb weighing in with 63 not out.

  18. wicket

WICKET Banton c Burgess b Rae 12published at 16:32 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Warks 337 & 270 v Somerset 239 & 148-4

Somerset keep falling into the trap.

Michael Rae bangs another one in short and Tom Banton can't resist.

But he top edges an attempted pull and wicketkeeper Michael Burgess leaps high to take a two-handed catch above his head.

Rae now has three. Could we yet be in for fireworks?

  19. Postpublished at 16:28 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Hants 328-3 v Essex 438-8d

Mo Abbas has had quite the day at Utilita Bowl.

He rocked up from his on-ground hotel just over half an hour before the start, didn't need to warm-up his bowling and hasn't had to contemplate batting.

He's currently wandering around the boundary edge with bowling coach Graeme Welch. Nice work if you can get it!

He looks very appreciatively towards Tom Prest dispatching a six over midwicket. Like Albert earlier, Prest is well over his career-best Championship score.

It's now raining in Bristol. That may be it for this game.
