  1. Hampshire avoid the follow-onpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Hants 289-3 v Essex 438-8d

...and that is surely this match cooked as a contest.

Tom Prest guides a ball to point for two and Hampshire are within 150 runs and therefore the follow-on score has been reached.

Now we play solely for bonus points...

Michael Rae spears one down leg and almost tempts Tom Lammonby to play.

    Two singles from the over.

Tom Abell then waits and cuts Rob Yates' down to third man for his second boundary.

Seven from the over - a very nominal 217 more required.

Well this is a collector's item, a Simon Harmer drop.

Sam Cook finds a bit of bounce in the channel and the outside of Tom Prest's bat.

This is usually meat and drink for Harmer at second slip, but he can't hold on.

A massive sigh of relief for Prest - who was on a nervous 92.

Peter Handscomb has been Mr Consistency for Leicestershire and reaches 50 for the eighth time in the Championship this season by steering Graeme van Buuren away for a single.

It has taken the Australian 73 balls and it's no wonder he's a firm favourite among Leicestershire followers.

    The lead is 133.

If Louis Kimber is in the mood we could be in for some fun in Bristol.

Ollie Price flights up another off-break and the Leicestershire batter elevates it over mid-wicket for six.

The second new ball in the Essex innings witnessed six wickets fall in a session.

Hampshire are still 29 runs away from avoiding the follow-on.

This period could determine whether we are condemned to a draw or not.

(We are almost certainly heading for a draw, but let us have some hope!)

Win number seven for Surrey and 23 points earned as they take another big step towards a hat-trick of titles.

Tom Hartley fends off a short ball from Conor McKerr and Ryan Patel dives to his right at short leg to take a superb one-handed catch.

Lancashire added 148 to their overnight 26-1 but the strength in depth of the Surrey squad was just too much for them.

McKerr Finishes with 4-27 and Dan Worrall - who earlier dismissed Rocky Flintoff first ball - takes 3-31.

Another one winkled out by Gloucestershire.

Rehan Ahmed pushes forward to spinner Ollie Price and edges to the keeper.

The Foxes are 101 in front with five wickets left. Are we in for an exciting final session?

  11. WICKET Albert c Cook b Critchley 124published at 15:02 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Hants 258-3 v Essex 438-8d

A new personal best for Toby Albert but that doesn't prevent him from rocking his head back in annoyance at the mode of his dismissal.

He had played a couple of beautiful reverse sweeps earlier in the Matt Critchley over, but this time he has top-edged to deep point.

Essex finally have a bowling point!

  12. Batting point for Hampshirepublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 25 August 2024

    Hants 250-2 v Essex 438-8d

Hampshire have their first batting point - and are up to three bonus points in this match.

Tom Prest and Toby Albert really have batted supremely well today, and in the latter overs of this ball have accelerated nicely.

Pity five sessions were wiped out from this match...

Was it Manchester band The Smiths who said "a rush and a push and the land is ours"?

The land at The Oval is Surrey's own but they are certainly rushing towards victory now.

Three balls after removing Tom Aspinwall, Conor McKerr sends Josh Boyden's off stump cartwheeling out of the ground.

    Breaking

    Worcs 447 & 102-2 v Kent 171 & 376

It's not the most graceful way to do it, but Kashif Ali brings up his fifty and victory for the Pears.

He gets a thick outside edge to Alfie Ogborne delivery which flies over second slip all the way for four.

It's an eighth first-class fifty, coming off 67 balls, with 10 boundaries, and more importantly it completes the chase in just 24.3 overs.

Worcestershire take 23 points from a win which gives their hopes of avoiding the drop a real boost.

Back-to-back victories push them firmly from the relegation places up into the comfort of mid-table with four rounds of the season to go.

Rock-bottom Kent’s troubles deepen as they take just three points from a fourth defeat of the campaign and have been cut adrift a little.

With Kashif Ali just six away from a half-century and eight needed for victory, he dances down the midwicket to Joey Evison's final ball.

He lofts it over midwicket - not exactly where he was intending - and it trickles over the rope to move to 48.

    Four needed.

Toby Albert and Tom Prest keep on rolling along.

Going is very very easy right now and therefore runs are coming at will.

Still a long way until Hampshire's record third-wicket stand against Essex - that was the 387 put on by Will Smith and James Vince in 2014.

Just two more needed by Surrey now.

Kashif Ali is timing it beautifully and clips Alfie Ogborne square between the fielders on the onside to bring up the fifty partnership with Rob Jones.

    It comes off 80 balls.

The pair then trade singles as Kashif moves to within six of a half-century.

Rob Jones picks up his second boundary to finish the over.

The hosts need just eight more for victory.
