    ALEX DAVIES (WARWICKSHIRE) - 37%

1,110 runs, average 52.85, four centuries

The captaincy of a club often weighs heavy on a new incumbent but Davies has risen to the occasion this season.

The keeper-batter became the first man to reach 1,000 runs in Division One this season in a soggy draw against Worcestershire at New Road this month.

It was just the second time the 30-year-old has reached the milestone, after doing so for Lancashire in 2017.

It had looked an inevitability since the opening weeks of the season when he amassed a career-best 256 from 311 balls in a run-fest against Durham at Edgbaston in April.

Getting things going at the top of the order we have two batters who also carry the burden of captaincy.

RORY BURNS (SURREY) - selected by 54% of users who voted

1,057 runs, average 55.63, three centuries

Leading Surrey to a third consecutive Division One title will undoubtedly go down as the biggest achievement of the season for Rory Burns.

But the 34-year-old - who won 32 England Test caps - played his part with the bat too, hitting a career-best 227 against Lancashire at The Oval in August.

The Surrey captain was the fourth leading run-scorer in the division and one of only three players in the squad to play every game, alongside opening partner Dom Sibley and all-rounder Jordan Clark.

The waiting is over and the barely bearable anticipation is at an end.

Votes have been cast and we can now reveal your County Championship team of 2024.

It's likely to cause debate because, well these things always do.

But while we wait for our first game to get under way, let's run through how this stellar team lines.

    Drum roll, please...

The rain appears to have stopped in Chelmsford and the groundstaff are clearing the standing water. But there's A LOT of it.

We'll bring you any news of a planned resumption between Essex and champions Surrey.

The sun is also out at Headingley, so hopefully we'll get some play after lunch between Yorkshire and Northants as the White Rose county looks to secure promotion to Division One.

  7. What is underneath the Taunton covers?published at 10:46 British Summer Time

    Somerset 136 v Hants 62-5 - inspection at 11:00 BST

    Harry Everett
    BBC Sport from Taunton

This was the pitch in full sun yesterday.

Not a nod to Ciderabad, but with surely the three best spinners in England on show in this fixture, plus the star of recent rounds in Archie Vaughan, Somerset batted first primarily for bowling spin in the fourth innings.

This slightly backfired as Kyle Abbott does what he always seems to do against Somerset - take wickets, but not 17 in the match for him this time as Liam Dawson also joined him with 4-fer.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore dug in for his first Championship 50 of the season (and just his second overall after that T20 quarter-final knock at Wantage Road) getting Somerset to 136, but that looked above par the way Hampshire batted so scattily in the 28 over evening session.

It is not turning massively but really rash shots, from skipper James Vince most culpably, even with another early dropped catch, has Hampshire behind in this game already five down.

  8. Further inspection in Cardiffpublished at 10:44 British Summer Time

Glamorgan v Gloucs - start delayed, wet outfield

The umpires will inspect once again at 11:15 BST in this Division Two fixture at Sophia Gardens.

It's one of the grounds where the chances of play are looking more promising...

  9. Could this one disappear down the plughole?published at 10:35 British Summer Time

Durham v Kent - no play Friday, wet outfield

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

The umpires have already abandoned play on day two of Durham’s County Championship match at home to Kent.

No play was possible because of torrential rain yesterday and the outfield is now considered too wet for play, with more heavy showers hitting the ground this morning.

Durham lost an entire game against Hampshire at the start of the season, here in Chester-le-Street - and a full day of their next home game against Essex.

I now fear this one could disappear down the plughole as well.

However, this is nothing compared to the overs lost last season – mainly on the road! So far Durham have lost 780 overs of cricket in all formats this year. Last year they were around the 1,200 mark.

  10. Blotters on the gopublished at 10:31 British Summer Time

Worcs 119-7 v Lancs - start delayed, wet outfield

The groundstaff are being kept hugely busy as they try and mop up at the seven grounds where we still might have some play.

Groundstaff at workImage source, Rex Features

The first thing to say is that it's not all bad!

We have sunny intervals expected for most of the day at Cardiff and Headingley, so we can expect to see some play in both venues.

However, there's still plenty of moisture on the field from day one and there are ground delays.

A pitch inspection has taken place at 10:15 BST at Cardiff and there will be no play before lunch at Headingley.

We have a delay at Trent Bridge where Notts (33-2) play Warwickshire. Inspection and lunch there at 12:00 BST.

We have a delay at New Road where Worcestershire are waiting to resume on 119-7 against relegation-threatened Lancashire.

As Harry just mentioned, the forecast is improving at Taunton and the covers are being peeled off.

But the forecast is gloomy at Hove where newly-promoted Sussex play promotion hopefuls Middlesex. There will be a ground inspection here at midday.

Sadly, it's a similar picture at Chelmsford, where Essex (on 116-1) and champions Surrey are highly unlikely to make it on to the field before lunchtime.

Play has already been abandoned for day two of the Leicestershire-Derbyshire match at a very damp Grace Road and at Chester-le-Street, where Durham are still trying to start their match against Kent.

  12. Taunton pitch inspection at 11:00 BSTpublished at 10:25 British Summer Time

    Somerset 136 v Hants 62-5

    Harry Everett
    BBC Sport from Taunton

The overnight rain has now ceased but a couple of puddles on the pitch has kept the six groundstaff pretty busy.

The sight of Alfie Ogborne and Kasey Aldridge (Somerset's two potential opening bowlers this morning) just walking past me out of the ground for a coffee shows they are in no rush to get their bowling boots on.

This game is set up beautifully and still could see a two day finish with the rest of today set to be dry.

The covers are now being removed.

  13. No play on day two at Durham or Leicestershirepublished at 10:23 British Summer Time

    Leicestershire v Derbyshire & Durham v Kent

These will now be two-day games at best.

Overnight rain has left huge puddles on the outfield at Grace Road.

Conditions remain very wet at the Riverside, despite a more promising forecast over there today.

    Sigh...

Welcome to our coverage of day two of the final round of this season's County Championship.

We got off to rather a damp start yesterday with rain sweeping across the country.

The bulk of the action took place at balmy Taunton in the battle for second place in Division One where 15 wickets fell.

They got a session in apiece at Worcester - where Lancashire boosted their survival hopes - and Chelmsford and 15 overs at Trent Bridge.

The remaining five matches - including all of Division Two - are yet to start.

If the grounds try out we should have more play today - so what are the weather prospects?
