It's time for a bit of pace before this ball gets soft.

This is a good partnership for Pakistan and Kamran Ghulam has looked impressive for someone who is making his debut.

  2. Pak 59-2published at 21 overs

Punched nicely off the back foot by Kamran Ghulam, through point for three, as Jack Leach drops a tad short.

Decent over from the left-arm spinner again but this is turning into a useful partnership between Ghulam and Saim Ayub.

They've put on 40 since Shan Masood's dismissal left Pakistan 19-2.

After passing Sir Alastair Cook's batting record last Test, this looks a prime opportunity for Root to edge a littler closer to 100 wickets.

  4. Pak 55-2published at 20 overs

All just a bit too full from Joe Root in his first over.

That allows Kamran Ghulam to drive through extra cover for three to bring up Pakistan's 50 before Saim Ayub pushes through the off side for two.

If you were wondering why Jack Leach was taken out of the attack after such a good start, we've got an answer: it was just a change of ends and he's back on.

Pakistan have no rhythm to this innings so far, they’re fearing for the worst and they're stuck to the crease.

Pakistan need to score some runs as this will be the best batting period for any side.

Well, the chances of that have just gone down a bit, Tom, because Ben Stokes has taken him out of the attack.

    Leach 10-fer?

    Tom, Winchester

  8. Pak 48-2published at 19 overs

A touch of good fortune for Kamran Ghulam as he pushes forward to a delivery that grips and turns from Shoaib Bashir.

There is an inside edge but the ball gets stuck in his pad when, on another day, it could well have hit the pad and popped up to a fielder.

  9. Pak 46-2published at 18 overs

England are racing through their over with spin on at both ends.

Good for the over rate, relentless for a live texter...

Anyway, there is some excitement from the England fielders as Jack Leach fires one in that stays a bit low to Saim Ayub but the left-hander gets his bat down just in time.

On a pitch like this you have to be disciplined and your footwork has got to be right.

In a matter of days the strategy has shifted from pace and balance to pure spin.

PitchViz rating this Test so far: 4.0

First Test day one, first Session at drinks: 2.1

    First Test overall: 3.0

PitchViz gives a rating out of 10. The higher the number the harder it is to bat.

  13. Pak 45-2published at 17 overs

There's definitely been more control from Shoaib Bashir so far this morning that we saw last week.

Just a single from his latest as Kamran Ghulam smears the last ball to long on.

The right-hander was looking for far more than one with that shot.

Kamran Ghulam has played a good hand so far, he's looked confident.

Saim Ayub is a touch player and he likes the ball to come onto the bat. He looks engaging when he's batting, but he needs to convert it into something substantial now.

  16. Pak 44-2published at 16 overs

Jack Leach rattles through another tidy over after drinks but the Pakistan pair get through it without any concern.

It has been a pretty assured start from debutant Kamran Ghulam but he'll know he has to stay switched on.

If you let up in Test cricket, you tend to be punished and given the assistance this pitch is already giving the spinners, I can't imagine today will be any different.

  17. What's going on with the Multan pitch?published at 07:06 British Summer Time 15 October

This pitch has been the most talked about 22 yards of earth in Pakistan...

For every single previous Test match in the history of the sport (we think) a fresh playing surface has been created.

But, given this match is being played at the same ground as the first Test, Pakistan have taken the unprecedented step of continuing where we left off - using the same pitch as the previous match.

They have done so because, even with England scoring 823-7 declared on this surface last week, they think this used, tired surface will offer more assistance for their SEVEN spin bowlers.

England's have already found more turn in this first hour than they did on average in all of their win last week.

There have been signs of uneven bounce too when England's pace bowlers have hit the growing cracks.

Between Tests the pitch was dried out by huge fans placed at each end while BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew says some sand or powder has been used to try to fill in those cracks.

Jack Leach bowls Abdullah ShafiqueImage source, Getty Images

A promising start for England, that's what.

Jack Leach has taken two wickets in the first hour after England lost the toss.

He bowled Abdullah Shafique with a beauty that turned before having Pakistan skipper Shan Masood caught at mid-wicket.

All of the talk has been about the pitch, however. After last week's run fest Pakistan have opted to continue on the same surface.

It is already turning more than you'd expect on a first morning and a few have shot low too.

It looks like being a very different few days to last week.

Great start for England. Jack Leach has bowled better than Shoaib Bashir and he's got more out of the surface.

England will be happy with how they're bowling. This surface is helping the spinners.

  20. drinks break

    Pak 42-2published at 15 overs

    Ghulam 10, Ayub 22

Shoaib Bashir finds the edge in the last over before drinks as Saim Ayub pressed forward.

The ball goes quickly and wide of Ben Stokes at slip but more good signs for England.

Ayub adds three on the cut and it's time for drinks. Good first hour for England and a good first hour for over-rate enthusiasts, 15 bowled so we're right on track.
