Today has been intriguing. Despite all the talk, the pitch played pretty well and has provided a more even tussle between bat and ball.

England performed well but, for me, Kamran Ghulam's century has Pakistan's noses in front.

We'll be back on Wednesday from 05:45 BST but before then there's a must-win game for England at the Women's T20 World Cup. You'll want to join us for that.

  2. 'Pleased with where we are'published at 13:52 British Summer Time 15 October

Matthew Potts celebrates wicketsImage source, Getty Images

England bowler Matthew Potts speaking to TMS: "Created a lot of chances over the course of the day. The boys stuck at it and we are pleased where we are with it now.

"You don't tell a score until both sides have batted on it. It appeared to be more flatter than we expected. The game is in the balance, a couple of early ones in the morning and we will see what it is.

"I think it did spin, slow spin kept a bit low. The lads stuck to the basics really well in some strong heat today. A couple of early wickets in the morming and hopefully we can run through them."

On his wicket of Saud Shakeel: "It takes a bit out of you, the heat but as long as you get the foods onboard it is not bad.

"We tried going back into the left-hander from around the wicket and Stokes said to me 'why don't we try to go across him for an over or two with a seven-two field on the off side and see what we can do'."

Temperamentally Kamran Ghulam was very strong and very focused.

He had excellent footwork against spin. His batting needs to improve against pace, but that will come with time.

Somehow we cannot complain as his overall game was superb.

Overall the PitchViz rating for today was 5.2, compared to 3.0 across the first Test meaning it has been significantly more difficult to bat.

The average turn was 3.79° for the spinners today, compared to 2.64° on day one in the previous Test and 2.87° across the first Test as a whole.

The reverse swing on offer for the quicks made a difference too. The average swing was 0.86° for the pacers today compared to 0.47° on day one in the previous Test.

  5. 'Every single run is important'published at 13:44 British Summer Time 15 October

Pakistan opener Saim Ayub, speaking to Sky Sports after scoring 77: "You can see the pitch was slow and turning, double-paced with the fast bowlers.

"Some balls were keeping low so it was difficult to bat, you have to keep watching until the end. Every single run is important in those conditions.

"Obviously [disappointed not to go on to a century] but even if I make 100 or 150, it's never enough. I always try to go and do the best I can do."

On partnership with Kamran Ghulam: "When he came out to bat, our plan was to play according to the conditions. We could see it was spinning, keeping a little bit low so ultra-focus was required.

"Our focus was just to give our team a good partnership and set the base for the coming batsmen to get runs."

  6. From Huddersfield to Test hundredpublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 15 October

Earlier this summer Kamran Ghulam was playing in the Huddersfield Premier League for Hoylandswaine.

Now the 29-year-old has a century on his Test debut.

He got his chance amid the huge turnover in the Pakistan XI from the first Test, having made his name in Pakistan's domestic first-class system.

He was calm for almost all of his innings and battled well against pace and spin.

The right-hander came in at 19-2 but scored 118 from 224 before being bowled late in the day by Shoaib Bashir.

All the seam bowlers can be pleased with their work. It was nice to see Ben Stokes back with the ball in hand.

It did feel like there would be reverse swing at play because of the two dry pitches which they have cut either side of the playing surface.

If the first bounce is on lush grass then the ball stays smooth and it aids the batting paradise conditions we had last week.

Brydon Carse's accuracy was the key highlight of his performance today. He bowled at an average speed of 84.8 mph, as quick as the two innings in the first Test.

In terms of his line and accuracy today, 37% deliveries were in good line and length zone compared to 16% in the first innings in the previous Test and 28% in the second innings.

England's day has been split up into parts. It began all about the spinners but when they found some reverse swing the seamers came into the game.

Brydon Carse, who took 1-14 in 11 overs, was superb - his Durham team-mate Matthew Potts good too for his 1-36.

Potts could have had another wicket but England missed an edge behind when Muhammad Rizwan was on six.

    Brydon Carse bowled beautifully.

He had great intent and he did it in the first Test match with not much reward.

Everyone in-between the games has appreciated the effort and gusto that he bowls.

He looked in great rhythm and he hit a nice line and length at the beginning. Then with the reverse swing he caused problems for the batter.

Eyes have been on the pitch all day. It is the same surface the first Test was played on, making this the sixth day it has been played on.

There has a bit of turn early on, plus some uneven bounce, and when Jack Leach took two early wickets, reducing Pakistan to 19-2, it looked like this could have been a quick Test.

But things have flattened out and Pakistan have played very well. Kamran Ghulam, on debut in place of Pakistan superstar Babar Azam, scored a superb century.

That session has been England's getting those two wickets and slowing things down.

Muhammad Rizwan has played nicely and on reflection I think he will have wanted to play a few more shots, but it's not the pitch to do that.

The pitch hasn't offered as much as the spin would have thought.

England's fielders are walking off arm in arm.

We thought this much-debated pitch might crumble first thing this morning but it has played pretty well.

It has been a good tussle between bat and ball.

  14. Close of play - Pak 259-5published at 90 overs

    Rizwan 37, Salman 5

There is no late hurrah for England.

That's the end of an absorbing and pretty even day.

  15. Pak 259-5published at 89.3 overs

Muhammad Rizwan is still skipping down the pitch despite the end of the day being just moments away.

  16. Pak 255-5published at 89 overs

Shoaib Bashir's penultimate ball of the days skids on to beat the edge. Ben Stokes grimaces.

Jack Leach will bowl the last...

  17. Pak 254-5published at 88 overs

    Rizwan 32, Salman 5

Quite a few deliveries have kept low throughout the day but none of them have been on the stumps. This latest Leach delivery is the closest we have come to such a scenario but Salman Ali Agha gets a decent amount of bat down on it.

This has already been a better balance between bat & ball than the last Test. Will Pakistan's selection be proved right if it starts to break up and offer spin in the coming days?
