Summary

  1. Pak 15-0published at 7 overs

It was a disappointing first Test for Shoaib Bashir but that's a good first over from the young off-spinner.

Round the wicket to the left-handed Saim Ayub, he keeps a fairly straight line before tossing the last ball up a little wider.

That's the one that grips and turns to beat the outside edge. Promising start for Bashir. Maiden.

The perception that it's going to spin has caused to the indecision in that over from Jack Leach. I don't think there's been any grip off the surface, nothing has turned away from the right-hander [Abdullah Shafique] and nothing turned in for the left-hander [Saim Ayub].

  3. Pak 15-0published at 6 overs

Abdullah Shafique gets his first boundary of the innings as he puts away a low full toss from Jack Leach to find the mid-wicket boundary.

Otherwise, it's a fairly tidy over from the England left-arm spinner.

And we're going to see more spin, Shoaib Bashir is coming on at the other end. Tells you a lot about how much movement there was for the seamers.

  4. Pak 10-0published at 5.1 overs

Superb start from Jack Leach, tempting Saim Ayub outside off stump and drawing a play and miss straightaway.

Both teams were clearly desperate to win the toss and bat first on a pitch which seems it's going to deteriorate - runs on the board are going to important.

We have seen a couple of signs of indifferent bounce, in particularly the low bounce I can't see it exploding off the cracks.

  6. Pak 10-0published at 5 overs

Maiden over from Matthew Potts as he holds an off stump line to Abdullah Shafique.

It's been steady enough from the two seamers but Ben Stokes has seen enough, he's turning to Jack Leach early.

England have lost seven tosses in a row.

Their worst run is nine losses in a row between 29 November 2000 v Pakistan in Faisalabad and 5 July 2001 against Australia at Lord's.

So we had a "road' of a pitch let's hope using the same one is not the complete opposite and the Test is over in two days.

    Neill, pessimistic in Melksham

  9. Pak 10-0published at 4 overs

A single from the last ball of Brydon Carse's over and the Abdullah Shafique-Saim Ayub opening partnership reaches double figures for the first time.

Not something they'd have wanted to be notable but a milestone is a milestone.

Add it to the records broken in this series.

Pakistan XI's combined Test experience before the start of this Test = 150 Tests.

    Joe Root = 147 Tests

    Ben Stokes = 105 Tests

Other England players = 207 Tests

Matthew Potts with around the wicket line to the left hander. That gives you the option to get lbw or bowled, but in these conditions it's about being patient.

  12. Pak 9-0published at 3 overs

Already a record opening stand for Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique as the former plays a lovely shot through point off the back foot.

Just a hint of width from Matthew Potts and the left-hander punished him.

More signs of variable bounce to end the over, though, as another stays low and finds Ayub's edge, only to bounce well short of Jamie Smith.

I could hear Ben Stokes say, 'its started already boys'.

That's where those cracks are from Brydon Carse's end. There's a big long crack with a crumbling edge and if you hit the corner it could dart along the ground.

One there caught Abdullah Shafique on the back foot.

If they [Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique] get to 10 it will be a record of their own.

They will have broken the demons they have as an opening partnership.

  15. Pak 5-0published at 2 overs

It is indeed Brydon Carse sharing the new ball as part of an England seam attack made up entirely of Durham players - Ben Stokes being the third.

Carse, who impressed on debut in the series opener, starts well again and gets Abdullah Shafique to nibble at a ball on a fourth stump line.

Play and a miss. I suggest we shouldn't expect too many of those.

Saim Ayub gets off the mark by swatting Carse through mid-wicket for three before the last delivery stays a touch low and Shafique inside edges onto his pad.

Matthew Potts with a nice start hovering around off stump. If I was a seamer having looked at the pitch I would have wanted to bowl at the end Brydon Carse has chosen.

Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique have batted together eight times as an opening pair with scores of nought, nought, three, five, nought, seven, eight and nought.

That's comfortably a record for a pair of top order players in Test history.

  18. Pak 1-0published at 1 over

Solid first over from Matthew Potts but pretty much nothing in the way of swing.

Ben Stokes quickly whips out his second slip and puts in a catcher in front of square on the off side.

Potts is targeting the stumps and with so little lateral movement, you'd expect that to be the ploy for England's seamers - at least until the inevitable bouncer barrage later.

Here come the players then for the start of this second Test.

England can clinch a series win with victory this week, Pakistan will hope to force a decider.

After a record-breaking first Test, we have a first before a ball has even been bowled in the second with this the first time the same pitch has been used in back-to-back Tests.

We're about to see how that plays out. Matthew Potts has the new ball and is ready to bowl to Abdullah Shafique...

  20. 'England are going to bully on a flat surface'published at 05:59 British Summer Time 15 October

    Alex Hartley
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

Pakistan have obviously watched how England played the first Test and thought 'England are going to bully us on a flat surface'.

Pakistan have thought about how is the best way of winning this Test match and that's to have a pitch which turns and does a bit.

But, when you want a pitch that turns and does a bit I wasn't expecting the pitch which has previously had five days of Test match cricket on.
