Summary

  1. Ghulam dropped on 79published at 63.4 overs

    Pak 179-4

So nearly a wicket in his first over back for Jack Leach.

Kamran Ghulam tries to put the pressure on the left-arm spinner, shuffling down the track slightly and aiming a shot over mid-on.

He doesn't get all of it, though, and the diminutive Ben Duckett dives to try and take the catch.

He gets his right hand to it but can't hold on to what would've been a stunning grab.

Nice set-up with the dismissal there - the wicket delivery from Brydon Carse to Saud Shakeel shaped away from the left-hander. All 11 deliveries from Carse to Shakeel prior to the wicket shaped into the left-hander.

  3. Pak 178-4published at 64.1 overs

Time for a bit more spin as Jack Leach returns to replace Matthew Potts, who bowled a good spell either side of tea.

Is there still anything there for the spinners with this older, softer ball?

It was creeping down leg. It's a touch high, but it certainly hit Muhammad Rizwan in line.

I would be questioning it more than the England players did.

  5. Pak 178-4published at 63 overs

Brydon Carse has really found his rhythm now.

He charging in and causing new batter Muhammad Rizwan plenty of problems.

It's full and targeting the stumps but what surprises Rizwan is when Carse gets one to nip back.

Big appeal as the right-hander is hit on the back leg. It looked straight but was probably a bit high.

  6. Pak 178-4published at 62 overs

There are two kinds of leave in this game and this is a good one from Kamran Ghulam - just.

Excellent ball from Matthew Potts from slightly wider on the crease and the angle, plus some reverse swing, help the ball continue on towards Ghulam's off stump.

The Pakistan batter shoulders arms and the ball whistles by, mightily close to that off peg.

If you can find those thin edges there's wickets on offer.

As the game moves on the cracks will open a touch more. The variable bounce from the middle of the pitch will be a significant advantage for the seam bowlers.

    The pendulum swings towards England.

  8. Pak 178-4published at 61 overs

Very, very good from Brydon Carse.

Some good aggressive bowling and he topped it off with a very skilful delivery to remove Saud Shakeel.

Muhammad Rizwan is the new batter and goes back to defend the final ball of the over.

An excellent piece of bowling from Brydon Carse.

There's slight reverse swing away from the left hander, Saud Shakeel. The thin edge surprises Jamie Smith and it's a pure reaction catch.

Carse has bowled a nice spell.

    Edged and gone!

Superb from Brydon Carse, who has really worked Saud Shakeel over in the last few balls.

He banged a couple in short, hitting the left-hander on the gloves with one well-directed slippery delivery.

Perhaps that was in Shakeel's mind as he failed to really commit on the front foot to a fuller delivery that reverses away to take the edge.

Jamie Smith was taken slightly by surprise but clings on to a smart catch.

Kamran Ghulam's four was possibly a result of frustration. He had gone 21 balls and scored one run.

  12. Pak 177-3published at 60 overs

Kamran Ghulam has had enough of this scoreless start to the session and takes action.

The right-hander uses his feet to advance and muscle Matthew Potts through a vacant mid-off for four.

Potts responds with a very good, accurate yorker and Ghulam jams the bat down to keep it out.

  14. Pak 173-3published at 59 overs

There's another scuttling through to start Brydon Carse's over and Jamie Smith does very well behind the stumps to get something on it and prevent byes.

Saud Shakeel is happy to play his way through a maiden and we're still waiting for the first run after tea.

The foundation that Pakistan have laid is a good one.

We are seeing more balls scuttle through, but the reverse swing is something to keep an eye on.

Although, Pakistan have only decided to play one seamer.

Maiden over to start the session from Matthew Potts.

Still a hint of reverse on offer for the seamer and Joe Root is still in close at slip with the helmet on.

Fielders catching in front of the bat as well but none are called into action this time around.

England are making their way back onto the field for the evening session.

They'll be looking for early wickets with this reverse-swinging ball.

Given that, in a break from the norm, they are almost up with the over-rate, they're highly likely to have the option of a few overs with the second new ball as well.

Kamran Ghulam is on strike for Pakistan, the debutant resumes on 75.

It has been a fascinating first day so far in Multan, as much as anything because it is essentially day six on this pitch.

Back-to-back Tests on the same pitch is unprecedented so no-one really knows what to expect.

Unsurprisingly perhaps, there is already a little more in it for the bowlers than in the first Test and you'd anticipate it will only get tougher for the batters.

But when will it really start to get tricky? Will the odd ball rear up or will it just get lower? Will it start to turn square and that bit quicker as the top of the surface crumbles?

We're a bit in the dark, really, and only time will tell.

A first Test wicket away from home for Matthew Potts in his first overseas Test.

That got rid of Saim Ayub for 77 but Pakistan debutant Kamran Ghulam has played very nicely and is just 25 runs away from a debut hundred...

Since Brydon Carse was introduced into the attack in the 47th over, England pacers with more than a hint of reverse swing on offer have induced 30% false shots - almost one in every three deliveries.

They'll feel unlucky to go into the break with just the one wicket in the session.
