Summary

  1. drinks break

    Pak 208-4published at 73 overs

Matthew Potts can't believe it and can only offer a wry smile as he walks back to his mark after beating Muhammad Rizwan again.

This time it is with a delivery that moves back through the gate and stays low - somehow missing off stump.

The ball previous, Rizwan had come skipping down with an ugly hack that he clothed straight to a fielder.

Time for drinks. Kamran Ghulam's wait goes on but Matthew Henry's is over, he'll take you through the rest of the day.

No debutant batting at number four has ever scored a century against England.

  3. Pak 208-4published at 72 overs

Muhammad Rizwan takes a single from the last ball of Jack Leach's over.

So the wait for Kamran Ghulam, three away from a hundred on debut, goes on.

    PitchViz Update:

    First session: 4.7

    Second session: 6.0

    Third session (so far): 6.0

    Overall: 5.3

This is still the third toughest day one pitch in Pakistan since the start of 2019.

PitchViz gives a surface a rating out of 10. The higher the number the harder it is to bat.

  5. Pak 207-4published at 71 overs

Kamran Ghulam is just one shot away from a century on debut but he's being tested by Matthew Potts with England's umbrella field in place.

The right-hander manages to find a way through it as he turns a full, straight delivery through mid-wicket for three.

A single for Muhammad Rizwan to end the over means he'll keep strike, though.

  6. Pak 203-4published at 70 overs

    Beauty from Jack Leach.

This one did beat Muhammad Rizwan's bat - and by a long way.

It pitched around middle and turned sharply, with decent bounce as well, past the right-hander as he lunged forward.

You can see the disappointment in Ben Stokes' face.

Muhammad Rizwan was fishing outside the off stump. Stokes wasn't sure and he didn't hear anything, it was the faintest of tickles.

Goodness me. England have missed a trick.

Matthew Potts thought he heard something when he whistled that ball past Muhammad Rizwan's outside edge.

Everyone else dismissed it but UltraEdge shows Potts was right to be interested. There was a little nick.

    Rizwan gets away with one.

  9. 200 runs

    Pak 200-4published at 69 overs

Matthew Potts comes on and picks up where Brydon Carse left off: making life incredibly difficult for Muhammad Rizwan.

Having started with a couple of in-swingers, Potts gets to move away from the right-hander and beat him all ends up.

Another out-swinger has Rizwan in trouble but this time the ball slides off the outside half of the bat, wide of slip and away for a two that takes Pakistan to 200.

  10. Pak 197-4published at 68 overs

It takes until the 20th ball he's faced but Muhammad Rizwan is off the mark, driving Jack Leach through the covers for a couple.

Freed up by that, he gets down and sweeps the next ball superbly in front of square for four.

This pitch is a wicketkeeper's nightmare.

  12. Pak 190-4published at 67 overs

England are cranking up the pressure on Muhammad Rizwan.

A superb diving stop from Zak Crawley at short mid-off keeps him on nought and Brydon Carse then gets one to stay low and bobble through to Jamie Smith as Rizwan tries to cut.

    Another maiden.

  13. Pak 190-4published at 66.1 overs

    Edged... but short of slip.

Joe Root really can't get much closer at first slip - he's already wearing a helmet - but still a genuine edge from Muhammad Rizwan doesn't carry.

Brilliant bowling again from Brydon Carse but a second wicket is eluding him for now.

Kamran Ghulam is playing to his strengths.

He can dominate spin as he's done that throughout his first-class career.

He looked nervous against reverse swing, but he wants to get to 100 as soon as possible.

  15. Pak 190-4published at 66 overs

    Ghulam 91, Rizwan 0

No backward steps from Kamran Ghulam despite a couple of nervy moments.

He moves into the 90s with a pair of boundaries from Jack Leach's over.

The first is thumped straight of mid-on before he dances down and chips the next comfortably over Ben Duckett's head.

Kamran Ghulam has to be more logical when he's batting out of the crease.

Brydon Carse bowls a heavy ball so Ghulam needs to be mindful.

  17. Pak 182-4published at 65 overs

Well, he's played well but Kamran Ghulam is riding his luck a little bit at the moment.

He skips down the track again, this time to Brydon Carse, and sends the ball high into the off side.

Ben Duckett is again the fielder but this time there is enough distance on it that the ball lands safely. No chance of a catch.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Rizwan remains scoreless after 12 balls faced.

He was eventually called back to Pakistan but in the English summer just gone, Kamran Ghulam played as the overseas for Hoylandswaine in the Premier Division of the Huddersfield League. When I umpired him, he scored a commanding 43* from 71 balls against Shepley as they won by seven wickets. Very impressive to see his adaptation to Test cricket

Ben Duckett could have done very little more in that situation. After putting the dive in, it was one of those that either sticks or it doesn't.

On this occasion it didn't and Kamran Ghulam's debut knock continues.

That would have been a world-class catch. England are making things happen in this last session.

Pakistan are on the defensive and they need to find a way of getting the scoring rhythm back.
