    Allison c Simpson b Hudson-Prentice 3 (Worcs 119-4, target 361)

    The nightwatchman goes early.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice has had a good game with 22 runs, 5-40, 10 and now 1-16 and this is a nice delivery which leaves Ben Allison off the pitch and in the air and takes the edge.

    Sussex 284 & 256 v Worcs 180 & 119-3 (target 361

Ben Allison misses a big inswinger from Ollie Robinson in the opening over but the ball is doing far too much and would have missed leg stump.

Fynn Hudson-Prentice has ball in hand for the second over of the morning and has sight of Jake Libby who is on 65 not out.

Two slips in place and the second ball stays very low. Libby throws an accusing glare at the pitch before turning the third ball off his legs for a single.

Up and running on at a slightly gloomy Hove.

Matthew Fisher didn't like that one. Banged in short of a length, he takes his eye off the ball, but manages to fend it off.

He learns the lesson and gets solidly in behind the next.

  4. 'It would be a cricketing miracle'published at 11:05 British Summer Time 12 May

    Essex 123 & 64-4 v Yorks 216 & 426-6 dec

    Jonathan Doidge
    BBC Radio Leeds cricket commentator

There are 96 overs scheduled, it is a lot of cricket balls to be bowled potentially.

They just need to find six of them and take wickets - you have to sort of boil it down to that.

Runs are off the menu really with them being 456 in front, with the best will in the world with six wickets left it would be a cricketing miracle if Essex were able to win the match from here.

  5. Postpublished at 128.5 overs

    Warks 665-5 dec v Surrey 373-9

First boundary of the day as Ben Foakes strokes Ed Barnard through point. He moves to 89 not out but can't rotate the strike from the all-rounder's final delivery.

Che Simmons will bowl from the other end.

  6. Postpublished at 11:03 British Summer Time 12 May

    Essex 64-4 (target 520) v Yorks

Jack White picked up three wickets last night, so he'll certainly have one eye on this opportunity for first five-wicket haul in Yorkshire colours.

Little surprise then that White is handed the ball for the opening over of day four and gets a bit of bounce off the surface, forcing Michael Pepper to fend the ball off on the leg side.

No runs from that first over, which won't bother Essex - it's all about trying to survive from their perspective.

  7. Postpublished at 128 overs

    Warks 665-5 dec v Surrey 369-9

The skies are clear at Edgbaston. Ben Foakes and Matthew Fisher are the not out batters, on 85 and four respectively.

What Warwickshire can't afford is to expend a lot of energy in taking this final Surrey wicket.

They will want this innings wrapped up quickly and Ed Barnard will be the first to try and claim it.

OK, we have three top games for you.

In the words of Mr Michael Buffer, 'let's get ready to rumble'.

(Looks a bit low-key when you can't hear him say it, doesn't it?)

Warwickshire head coach Ian Westwood hailed the impact of Che Simmons after the young fast bowler was rewarded with two Surrey wickets in a fiery third-day spell at Edgbaston.

Using leg theory tactics, Simmons removed Jordan Clark and Nathan Smith to boost the home side's hopes of victory.

"It's the sort of pitch where bowlers have to work hard with a lot of discipline and the guys kept on doing that right to the end and got their rewards," said Westwood.

"It was a really good collective effort and to see Che come in and bowl the way he did late in the day was great to see. It was an amazing spell for eight overs with some real pace and bounce and just showed how exciting a bowler he can be."

He has never played in the County Championship - but wouldn't it be great to see it, even if only for a few weeks, before he finally retires from the game.

India's Virat Kohli has followed the lead of Rohit Sharma by standing down from Test cricket ahead of this summer's series in England.

More than 9,200 runs in 123 Tests, including 30 hundreds, that's quite some record and you can read the full retirement story here.

Now then, county clubs, which of you can afford him?

  13. Essex 'still believe' draw possible - Thainpublished at 10:45 British Summer Time 12 May

    Essex 123 & 64-4 v Yorkshire 216 & 426-6 dec

Noah Thain (Essex)Image source, Rex Features

Noah Thain says Essex will not give up hope of salvaging a draw against Yorkshire – although their batters will need a herculean effort to avoid defeat at Chelmsford.

Set an unlikely target of 520 to win, the home side stumbled to 64-4 at stumps on day three, with Yorkshire seamer Jack White taking three of those wickets to maintain their grip on the game.

All-rounder Thain, who is due to come in next wicket down, said: “We still believe we can bat it out – we know the pitch. You saw they got 400-plus.

“If they can do it, we certainly can. There is no reason why we can’t give our best shot at blocking and try and play our game.

“Every partnership will be key. If we can get through the morning session unscathed, there is no reason why we can’t do it.”

Should Essex’s batters fail to see out the day, they will drop into the bottom two – replacing Yorkshire, who can climb into the top half of the table if they complete their second win of the season.

Sussex batting in their second innings

Sussex seamer James Hayes believes his side are nicely poised to win going into day four against Worcestershire at Hove.

The hosts appear to hold most of the aces with the Pears needing to score another 244 with seven wickets remaining.

Hayes, who signed for Sussex on an emergency two-week loan to cover bowling stocks depleted by injury, said: "We’ve bowled really well this game, we put two good scores up, and we’ve got more than enough runs on the board. Hopefully, we come back and take seven wickets and win the game."

Worcestershire rooted to the bottom of the Division One table after four rounds with one draw followed by three defeats so a fourth here would make this a miserable start to the season.

But they have shown fight with both ball and bat at Hove and spinner Fateh Singh thinks that while Jake Libby remains at the crease - he closed last night on 64 not out - there is hope.

“We’ve been behind it a bit,” he said. “But Libs (Jake Libby) has batted really well there and put us in with a really good chance.”

  15. Surrey ready to 'grind it out' - Sibleypublished at 10:37 British Summer Time 12 May

    Warwickshire 665-6 dec v Surrey 369-9

    Dom SibleyImage source, Rex Features

Surrey opener Dom Sibley praised team-mate Ben Foakes for saving them from the prospect of having to follow on during the third day's play at Edgbaston.

It may still happen on the final morning but Foakes batted for more than four hours for an unbeaten 85 as his team replied to Warwickshire's huge first-innings score.

Sibley himself made 64 and he said: "We would have liked to be going into the final day with a few less wickets down but Foakesy did brilliantly there at the end, he is really churning them [runs] out.

"I found it difficult to score at times, they bowled well and when the ball went really soft it was hard to pierce the field but this sort of situation is just about grinding it out."

  16. Weather outlookpublished at 10:33 British Summer Time 12 May

    County Championship (play starts 11:00)

Chelmsford: "Today will be warm and widely sunny. In the afternoon, some patches of cloud will push in from the south-east bringing the outside chance of an isolated heavy shower."

Hove: "Dry and variably cloudy this morning. In the afternoon, a few heavy showers will push in from the Channel, bringing some thunder along the coasts but also possibly inland at times too. A warm day."

Edgbaston: "This morning will be dry with sunny spells and variable cloud. From noon and onwards, scattered thunderstorms will break out with some heavy downpours as a result, and a risk of hail. A warm day."

The words "shower", "thunder", "thunderstorm", "downpours" and "hail" from the BBC Weather site localised forecasts are very unwelcome. Let us hope they prove wide of the mark.
