It is a terrific effort from Fisher and Foakes, but it is frustrating for Warwickshire as they would have come here thinking we have got a chance today.

I think now they will know deep down that realistically they don't have chance of winning the match.

It wouldn't be a disastrous draw for them, but they had a such good day yesterday.

When Dom Sibley said last evening that Surrey were ready to 'grind it out' today, it's doubtful that he envisaged their last-wicket pair still being together at the end of the morning.

But that is the case as Ben Foakes and Matthew Fisher play out Ethan Bamber's over with the new ball to end an extended session in which they have added 118 runs without being separated.

Foakes has cruised to 165 not out - the best score of his career - and Fisher is on 34. Their partnership is now worth 141 and Surrey need another 28 runs to prevent Warwickshire being able to ask them to bat again.

The Bears attack have tried their best but it looks like the only winner of this match will be the flattest of flat pitches.

  4. new ball

New ballpublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 12 May

    Warwicks 665-5 dec v Surrey 486-9

The answer to to "What do we do next?" (see previous entry) is 'take the new ball'. Ethan Bamber returns to bowl to Ben Foakes.

Surrey are only advancing in ones or fours now - they're not interested in running twos.

  5. Postpublished at 166 overs

    Warwicks 665-5 dec v Surrey 486-9

You feel that any hopes Warwickshire harboured of forcing a win over Surrey in this game have ordered a taxi to the city centre and plan to spend the afternoon shopping in the Bullring.

"What do we do next?" is surely the question occupying skipper Alex Davies' mind as they try to bring this stubborn 10th-wicket partnership - and the session - to an end.

Just a single from that over - Ben Foakes is now 164 not out.

  6. 'Fisher's batting coming to fruition'published at 13:27 British Summer Time 12 May

I was told Matthew Fisher had worked very, very hard over the winter on his batting, and it is clearly coming to fruition here against Warwickshire.

Lyndon James took seven wickets against Hampshire

Lyndon James says the rarefied air at the top of the Division One table will not go to Nottinghamshire’s heads after an impressive start to the season.

Nottsposted a third win in five games in emphatic fashion beating Hampshire by 366 runs on Sunday.

But James, who took 5-22 in the second innings and seven wickets in the match, said they will focus on their next match, away at Durham, not the table.

“Momentum is a strange thing. Winning and losing can become a habit both ways. Hopefully we can carry this forward and keep putting ourselves in good positions,” he said.

“Pretty much every game someone has got a 100 or a five-for to try and contribute and put us in a good strong position to win games.

“But it is a good place to be with all the lads sticking their hands up whether that is with bat or ball. It’s good to see and we are happy with where we are.”

  8. 'I didn't see it coming' - Hollioake on Kent losspublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 12 May

    Adam HollioakeImage source, PA Media

Kent head coach Adam Hollioake ruled out any 'crying in their cornflakes' from his team following their innings and 161 runs home defeat by Glamorgan on Sunday.

They are short of seam bowling options with Jas Singh set to miss the rest of the season and South African Keith Dudgeon forced to return home because of injury - and Wes Agar is not due to arrive until the end of the month.

"I didn’t see it coming at all. The wicket played well, we just played terribly. Let’s just hope that it’s just a one off and we can get it back but it was very disappointing," said Hollioake.

"We’ve just got to keep evolving and try to get better. We’re professional athletes and we’ve got a duty to our employers. I’ve got find a way to get us winning games without those two guys. There’s no point in crying in your cornflakes about it, we’ve just got to get on with it.”

  9. Record for Surrey pairpublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 12 May

    Warks 665-5 dec v Surrey 478-9

Ben Foakes puts away the final two balls of Zen Malik's over for four and he and Matthew Fisher have a Surrey record 10th wicket partnership against Warwickshire of 132.

They have beaten the 130 by Bert Strudwick and Bill Hitch on this same ground in 1911.

  10. Sussex look to new ballpublished at 13:10 British Summer Time 12 May

    Sussex 284 & 256 v Worcestershire 180 & 199-5

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

This game is still in the balance with Worcestershire adding 79 for the loss of two wickets this morning.

Jake Libby has now scored five centuries against Sussex and together with skipper Brett D’Oliveira has added an unbroken 44 for the fifth wicket.

A new ball will be available to Sussex in 12 overs which could define the game, and we could be in for an intriguing finish.

  11. 'A good recovery by Essex'published at 13:07 British Summer Time 12 May

    Essex 123 & 131-4 v Yorks 216 & 426-6 dec

    Victoria Polley
    BBC Essex Sports Editor

That has been a good recovery by Essex in this morning session, Matt Critchley and Michael Pepper digging in and Essex have not lost a wicket in the first session of the final day.

It doesn't matter so much about the runs at this point, but they are 131-4, there is still two more sessions for Essex to rescue a draw.

  12. 150 runs

for Ben Foakespublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 12 May

    Warks 665-5 dec v Surrey 461-9

New over from Rob Yates and Ben Foakes pulls two successive balls for four to reach 150 not out.

He has faced 299 balls in total so far and has hit two sixes and 23 boundaries.

  13. Lunch at Hovepublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 12 May

    Sussex 284 & 256 v Worcs 180 & 199-5 (target 361)

A piece of fielding from Air Karvelas in the penultimate over before lunch illustrates how much this match is tightening.

The fast bowler could have been forgiven for giving up on that as it went for four but he successfully dives to prevent a single at square leg as the batsmen run three.

Worcs have put on 82 and lost two wickets – nightwatchman Ben Allison was one and the other was Ethan Brookes – as the runs needed have come down to 162.

Sussex will need to have a think at lunch about how they make a breakthrough here and getting the wicket of Jake Libby will be key with the Devonian having reached 116.

  14. Lunch at Chelmsfordpublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 12 May

    Essex 131-4 (target 520) v Yorks

Yorkshire hand the ball to Adam Lyth, a part-time bowler who could certainly be described as a good bet to break a partnership, for the final over the morning.

Lyth floats it up six times to Michael Pepper, who isn't tempted to do anything rash and, although the bowler has a highly ambitious leg before appeal rejected, it's a maiden to round off the session.

A very satisfying one for Essex, who have kept their remaining six wickets intact, and frustrating for Yorkshire.

  15. Postpublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 12 May

    Warks 665-5 dec v Surrey 453-9

Short from Beau Webster and Matthew Fisher cuts it away for four as Surrey's total passes 450 at Edgbaston.

Ben Foakes is now 144 not out at the other end - the highest score of his career.

Because there are nine wickets down, though, lunch is delayed.

  16. 'There is the 100 partnership'published at 12:56 British Summer Time 12 May

    Warks 665-5 dec v Surrey 445-9

    Phil Britt
    BBC Coventry & Warwickshire

Ben Foakes has got a new bat in his hand now and will be a bit annoyed that he has broken the other one.

It doesn't matter though as there is the 100 partnership between Foakes and Fisher.

  17. 100 partnership for Surreypublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 12 May

    Warks 665-5 dec v Surrey 445-9

Ben Foakes chops Beau Webster away for a single and that is a 100 partnership for Surrey's 10th wicket with Matthew Fisher.

There have been very few alarms for them this morning but the deficit is 219 and presumably, they would be asked to bat again if Warwickshire can make a belated breathrough.

  18. Postpublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 12 May

    Essex 130-4 (target 520) v Yorks

Yorkshire might have been hopeful of wrapping up victory before they sat down to lunch - but so far they've failed to capture a single Essex wicket in this morning session.

Michael Pepper has added another boundary to his growing tally, sweeping Dan Moriarty to the rope to advance to 44.

It's Moriarty's spin colleague Dom Bess who's getting more to happen so far with the ball, but the Essex batters continue to thwart him.

  19. Postpublished at 12:52 British Summer Time 12 May

    Sussex 284 & 256 v Worcs 180 & 188-5 (target 361)

Is that going to free up Jake Libby now?

The answer looks to be yes judged on that over, first pivoting on his back foot he pulls Fynn Hudson-Prentice hard to the midwicket boundary.

And then he despatches another the same way beating the dive of James Coles.

He moves to 109 and Worcs need another 173.

  20. Postpublished at 12:48 British Summer Time 12 May

    Warks 665-5 dec v Surrey 444-9

Another quiet Beau Webster over ticks by.

Ben Foakes summons a new bat from the dressing room.
