It's goodbye for now from the first match of two in Sharjah today.

Have a read of Ffion Wynne's report on Australia's victory over Sri Lanka.

We'll be back shortly as England get their World Cup campaign under way against Bangladesh - that's a 15:00 BST start.

    We'll see you there.

  2. 'Decent without being perfect'published at 14:15 British Summer Time 5 October

Australia captain Alyssa Healy: "It's a good result for us and some confidence out of that.

"We were decent without being perfect. We adapted to the conditions and just hung in there and scored at the end of the innings.

"We haven't played here before, so the opportunity to watch and see how players were playing was quite helpful.

"We'll probably throw a few things through the tournament, we're so blessed with so much depth we don't know quite what to do with it, we've got batters we can move up and down the order."

  3. 'We have to be more positive'published at 14:14 British Summer Time 5 October

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu: "We have been playing good cricket in the last two months, but we have struggled on these tracks with low bounce and pace off. We cannot complain, we have to play these conditions and try to play positive cricket at all times.

"Our batting unit depends on the first four batters, we have struggled and we have to bounce back. We need to improve, play our positive and fearless cricket in the middle if we can."

Sri Lanka bowled well, particularly the spinners. But 94 is hard to defend, especially against one of the best batting sides in the tournament.

Australia will be happy that they've had a fairly easy game today to give them chance to understand this pitch in Sharjah.

  5. 'We have a bit to work on'published at 14:09 British Summer Time 5 October

Player of the match Megan Schutt: "We could have been a bit cleaner, it was quite a slow outfield so there was an adjustment and there’s a bit to work on.

"In the heat it was tough and Moons (Beth Mooney) lost about 16kg so it has been tough. We have finally acclimatised, in that I don’t feel like I’m dying but it is what it is and you just have to suck it up and survive."

We've got to start thinking about 130 as a pretty good total here at Sharjah, as the outfield is so slow.

Australia slot in behind New Zealand in Group A, sitting in second-place with a net run-rate of 1.908 from their first game.

Sri Lanka are in trouble now, having lost both their first two games - they will struggle to make one of the two qualifying positions.

Sri Lanka's prospects are certainly not promising. They have made things hard for themselves with their second loss in the tournament; they always knew Australia was going to be difficult. The semi-finals will be a tough ask from them now.

An exhausted Beth Mooney walks off the field unbeaten with 43 from 38 balls, Phoebe Litchfield alongside her with a run-a-ball nine.

The opener did an excellent job anchoring the innings in the Sharjah heat.

And that's the match from the following delivery.

Mooney pushes to square leg for the match-winning single and the defending champions have their win.

Not before a few scares though.

  11. Aus 93-4published at 14.1 overs

Sugandika Kumari comes on for the conclusion, and Beth Mooney - who has finally switched from a helmet to a cap - launches her over mid-on for a two-bounce four.

    Scores level.

  12. Aus 89-4published at 14 overs

    5 needed from 36 balls

Time for Dilhari again, in what could well be the final over of the match.

Litchfield fires her flat along the ground for four through the covers, then picks up two more with a reverse sweep that should be cut off at point.

She goes for the shot again from the final ball of the over but this time the ball is stopped - we'll go into the 15th over.

  13. Aus 81-4published at 13 overs

    13 needed from 42 balls

The 21-year-old Phoebe Litchfield comes to the crease - she may be young, but this is already her 40th international appearance.

She gets off the mark with a single to long-on.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 12.1 overs

    Gardner c Madavi b Ranaweera 12 (Aus 78-4)

Goes for the big hit over mid-wicket... spoons it in the other direction.

Ash Gardner will want to get out of the sun and into the shade and she targets four on the leg side boundary.

She only manages to offer a big leading edge off Ranaweera that's taken by Harshitha Samarawickrama at point.

  15. Aus 78-3published at 12 overs

    16 needed from 48 balls

Athapaththu sends down a bizarre ball that I'm not sure the speed gun will even notice, let alone measure - Mooney turns it down to fine leg for a single.

Brought back on strike, the opener dispatches a full toss past long-on for four.

She drops into a crouch at the end of the over, as she has done several times during it, while Gardner has an ice bag brought out and plonked on top of her head.

  16. Aus 68-3published at 11 overs

    Need 26 from 54

Sri Lanka bring back seamer Udeshika Prabodhani after the drinks break and Gardner dispatches her first ball over mid-off for four.

A couple more singles follow - after some early scares, Australia are closing on their target.

  17. Aus 62-3published at 10 overs

    Need 32 from 60

Chamari Athapaththu brings herself on to bowl her off-breaks, and Australia work her for five singles as they tick along towards their target.

Time for a much-needed drinks break at the halfway stage.

Mooney plays it safe and defends the final three balls of the over.

She's visibly struggling out there in the Sharjah heat - the umpire allowed a cold towel to be brought out to her a short while ago.

That is really not a great effort out on the boundary, it was up in the air for such a long time. Her hands were like Oliver Twist asking for more food!

  20. dropped catch

Mooney dropped on 22published at 8.3 overs

    Aus 57-3

    Mooney survives again!

She lobs Ranaweera up into the air into mid-wicket, the fielder out there gets themselves in an absolute muddle after running in from the ropes and drops what should be a relatively simple catch.

The Australia opener runs two to move to 24.
