That's it from us after a brilliant day three for England at Hagley Oval.

Read Stephan Shemilt's report from Christchurch as Ben Stokes' men closed in on victory over New Zealand.

It's not done quite yet but New Zealand are right up against it and England will fancy they can get the game wrapped up sharpish on day four.

You don't want to miss seeing them try and we'll be back from 21:45 GMT tonight for that. Make sure you join us!

  2. 'England stuck to their plans'published at 05:53 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2024

Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond on TNT Sports: "In the second innings New Zealand had the pressure of the lead but batting conditions were nice for New Zealand.

"However, England were disciplined with the ball and had clear plans, and stuck to those plans. It's amazing to think the Test match was so tight four hours ago and now it looks completely lopsided."

Chris Woakes got things started for England with the ball, removing Tom Latham early, and Brydon Carse got Devon Conway not long after.

Kane Williamson - who else? - led the New Zealand recovery but Carse struck again to dismiss Rachin Ravindra soon after tea.

Perhaps the day's most telling over came with around an hour of the day left as Woakes broke a 69-run stand for the fourth wicket, trapping Williamson lbw and then having Tom Blundell caught behind next ball.

A big boost for a bowler who has struggled overseas.

Then it was over to Carse again for the sixth wicket, Glenn Phillips lbw late in the day.

England's excellent day started with the bat.

Harry Brook reached his century on day two and made it to 171 today before he was eventually dismissed.

Ben Stokes found form with the bat, making 80 in his (temporary?) new position at seven before entertaining knocks from Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse down the order.

That took the tourists up to 499 for a first-innings lead of 151.

    Probably wise, Tom.

England still have work to do - taking four wickets on this surface won't be easy - but it's fair to say it will take something special for New Zealand to get themselves out of the hole they're in.

Have started searching the internet for 'things to do in Christchurch' now that day four looks like it might be a short one.

New Zealand know they have had a tough day, England have had a great day.

Nathan Smith survives and that's stumps. Another excellent day for England.

Three days done in Christchurch and Ben Stokes' side look to be on their way to victory in this first Test.

A wide slip, a gully, two leg gullies and a short leg in place as Gus Atkinson goes short at Nathan Smith.

Halfway through the over and no issues yet for the Black Caps all-rounder.

  10. NZ 155-6published at 48 overs

    Lead by 4

Daryl Mitchell did everything he could to try and make Brydon Carse' the last over of the day but he wasn't able to delay quite long enough.

There will be one more over and Gus Atkinson will bowl it. Nathan Smith is on strike.

  11. NZ 154-6published at 47 overs

    Lead by 3

Into the last 10 minutes before stumps and Gus Atkinson is going to have short burst.

What would have been a maiden is ruined by a no-ball from what should have been the last delivery.

Have England got time to squeeze in two more overs before the close?

Nathan Smith comes out with a big job to do for New Zealand on debut.

England are pushing for victory as the impressive Brydon Carse completes a wicket maiden.

The difference between a successful review and a failure? The odd millimetre or two. Umpire's call the deciding factor in the end.

It was a good delivery from Brydon Carse, a heavy ball that came back in and did enough to beat the inside edge of Glenn Phillips' bat.

A bail-trimmer but that will do for England!

It was banged into the pitch by Brydon Carse and although it stayed low, ball-tracking showed it was very nearly going over the top.

Nearly but not quite. Just tickling the leg bail and that is enough to send Glenn Phillips on his way.

    NZ 153-5

Brydon Carse thinks he's got Glenn Phillips lbw and the umpire agrees.

The New Zealand batter calls for the review... maybe too high?

  18. NZ 153-5published at 45 overs

Too short from Shoaib Bashir, Glenn Phillips pulls in front of square and gets three after a diving stop from Zak Crawley.

After all of that, New Zealand have a lead.

  19. NZ 148-5published at 44 overs

    Trail by 3

Far more conventional from Brydon Carse than I'd expected with the majority of his deliveries targeting the stumps.

Decent over from the burly England quick but Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips are standing firm for now.
