The early signs are that neither Rachin Ravindra nor Kane Williamson fancies taking on the short stuff, at least not before tea.

Just a single from the Gus Atkinson over.

Gus Atkinson returns and it is time for some short stuff before tea.

The field spreads. Will the New Zealand batters be drawn in?

In the CricViz database, there are 156 right-arm pacemen who have bowled more than 500 balls in Test cricket and Brydon Carse bowls the highest average length (8.4m) of them all. The higher the length, the shorter the bowling.

    Trail by 101

A pair of twos followed by a single for Rachin Ravindra brings up the 50 for New Zealand.

They still trail by more than 100 but that's the first little milestone for the Black Caps as they try to get back into this game.

  5. NZ 45-2published at 14 overs

    Williamson 24, Ravindra 8

Nearly the mistake England were hoping for from Kane Williamson as he drives at a full, wide ball from Chris Woakes and gets an inside edge just past his stumps.

He and Rachin Ravindra are starting to look a little more settled now, though, and the latter drives through mid-on for three.

What a catch by Gus Atkinson, he has been sublime since his debut; with the bat, in the field and obviously with the ball! Have we uncovered one of the world's best all-rounders? What an asset for the Ashes next year!

Brydon Carse gets one to leap up from back of a length and beat Rachin Ravindra as he flirts at it wide of off.

There is some excitement from the slips, who thought they heard a noise, but nothing from bowler or wicketkeeper.

Ben Stokes decides not to review. A good decision with UltraEdge confirming Ravindra was nowhere near it.

A no-ball is called belatedly to extend the over and the extra ball almost brings a wicket as Carse whistles a fuller ball past Ravindra's edge this time.

Chris Woakes is back after a change of ends, trying to get the most out of this ball while it's still relatively new.

In truth, already there is not much in the way of swing and seam compared to the first few overs and so when there is the slightest bit of width, Rachin Ravindra is confident in attacking with a punch through the covers for four.

I love to see our boys throwing themselves around for the sake of saving one run. Just another wicket before tea please lads, to help me keep my eyes open.

Lovely back-foot punch by Kane Williamson through point.

Four all day on most grounds but with these long square boundaries and a slow outfield, it leads to a chase this time.

Zak Crawley is the one after it and flicks the ball back just before the boundary cushion to save a run.

The 90-plus mph stuff was largely in white-ball cricket, Anonymous, which is obviously very different to bowling 15-20 overs a day in Tests.

Gus Atkinson can clearly ramp it up when he wants/needs to but while he's averaging 22 with the ball, smashing it around with the bat and taking diving catches in the field, I reckon England will say he fits in just fine.

Atkinson has had an effective start to Test cricket. But I don't feel he is as fast as he was expected to be. He came on the scene bowling 95mph. Since then he has consistently bowled at low 130's kph or 80 mph. He doesn't really fit the new criteria for English fast bowlers.

    Shot.

Bumper to start the over from Gus Atkinson and Kane Williamson dismissively pulls it away through square leg for four.

Yet again, the former New Zealand captain looks in good touch.

Oof, there's that bounce from Brydon Carse again.

His first ball to Rachin Ravindra really rears up and is taken above his head by Ollie Pope as the new batter leaves it well alone.

This is a big partnership for New Zealand, who are in a spot of bother now.

It is a superb catch from Gus Atkinson!

Brydon Carse has bowled at a decent pace and got plenty of bounce in this over.

Perhaps that's why Devon Conway went to pull a ball that wasn't all that short.

The connection isn't the cleanest but Atkinson still does very well to dive forward and to his left to take a low catch.

Brydon Carse and England think he's struck in his first over as Devon Conway pulls to mid-wicket.

It looks a very good catch by Gus Atkinson but the umpires want to check it.

Currently surrounded by good friends dancing to Ring My Bell whilst I'm also trying to follow the over by over feed. Slightly distracting but I'm going to forgive them since I've known them for nearly 30 years and they're not cricket fans! Go England!

Kane Williamson kicks the ballImage source, Getty Images

Half-volley from Gus Atkinson and a player of Kane Williamson is not going to miss out.

    Driven effortlessly to the boundary.

Next ball, Williamson defends on the back foot and the ball goes back towards his stumps, he wafts a boot to try and kick it away but misses completely.

Thankfully for him, the ball was a good few inches wide of off stump.
