Fans of wagon wheels, here's where Gus Atkinson belted his runs. He was brutal against anything short, until his demise.

  2. Carse given not outpublished at 95.2 overs

An easy one for the third umpire. Dug out by Brydon Carse and a fair bit of bat on it.

  3. New Zealand reviewpublished at 95.2 overs

Apologies accepted for putting on the mockers, gentlemen

Brydon Carse is the new batter and he is struck on the toe by a yorker from Will Rourke, but he looks to have got some bat on it first.

It was given as a four by Ahsan Raza.

A review more in hope than expectation.

Ah shame, that was a lot of fun.

Gus Atkinson goes for another almighty heave to a short ball from Nathan Smith but this time it's a little close to his body and he cannot quite generate the power needed with the stroke.

The ball goes high into the sky and down at deep square Glenn Phillips races in to take the catch.

Did I just awaken from the bash of thunder emanating from the nearby jungle or from the crack of Gus Atkinson’s bat? #uptheorder

    Eng 441-7published at 94.4 overs

Another short ball, this time from Nathan Smith, to Gus Atkinson who merrily takes on a hook shot.

There's a fair bit of top edge on this as it flies over his head for six.

Atkinson has motored his way to 44 off 34 balls here.

Optimistic Craven from Reading, surely a true optimist would go to bed hoping to see no wicket notifications in the morning?

We're just over 15 minutes away from the lunch interval. Be handy if these two could get to the interval with their wickets in tact.

Mark E: Gus Atkinson doing it against the new ball too. Promote him to open and Crawley can bat at three. Honestly, it’s really simple.

Much more convincing from Ben Stokes this time, as he holds the pose after punching Will O'Rouke for four down the ground. Excellent timing from the England captain.

I’ve looked up Kev Dorset and can’t find he’s achieved anything of cricketing note either. All square, carry on

Ben Stokes is largely still playing a calm hand here, allowing Gus Atkinson to express himself.

However, the England skipper gets a little fortunate with a delivery from Nathan Smith after a bit of hack. The ball flies over the cordon for four after being troubled a little by the bounce.

Ben Stokes batting at seven? If you start looking to the future, if he does start scoring runs down there, maybe we are going to see him at seven and Jamie Smith, when he comes back, bats at six.

Benfides: Last night I went to sleep in despair after Root's wicket, fully expecting England to be skittled for under 100. Fast forward 24 hours and what a beautiful watch this is. Nice to see some resilience shown and now enjoying the rewards.

    Lead by 73 runs

Will O'Rourke gets a little excited after Ben Stokes plays at one which cuts him in two.

There's a noise, but it's very much brushed the England captain's thigh on its way through leaving the Kiwi seamer looking a little sheepish.

New Zealand seem to be targeting Gus Atkinson with slightly shorter deliveries today - he showed his prowess taking on the short ball during his century at Lord's, hitting 31 off 14 with the pull shot during that innings.

  20. Eng 419-7published at 91.3 overs

Will O'Rourke has that tunnel vision look as he runs in and bowls. He's honing in on a specific area to Gus Atkinson, but the England batter has an answer for everything so far.

Atkinson's technique is very uncomplicated. If its in his zone, it gets the full treatment.

O'Rourke offers Atkinson some width and thumps it through the covers for four.
