Good take from Ollie Pope as the last ball of an otherwise accurate Chris Woakes slides down the leg side.

Decent start for England but Devon Conway and Kane Williamson have done their best to slow the tourists' momentum - snowball like or not - in the last couple of overs with some solid defence.

Not the appropriate climatic analogy for this sport, but England's momentum is beginning to snowball.

    Beauty.

A touch shorter from Gus Atkinson and the ball nips away to beat Devon Conway as he looked to defend.

The New Zealand opener did well not to push at that otherwise he may well be walking back to the pavilion right now.

    Maiden over.

Uppish from Kane Williamson but wide of Gus Atkinson and he gets four with a drive through mid-off.

Decent over from Chris Woakes regardless.

Meanwhile, slips Joe Root, Harry Brook and Ben Duckett are deep in conversation and clapping back and forth at one another.

I've got no idea what that is all about.

Devon Conway has been short of runs of late and, having fallen cheaply in the first innings, is in need of a score.

He punches Gus Atkinson smartly back down the ground for a confidence-boosting boundary.

Kane Williamson is in early again for New Zealand and how England would love to see the back of him quickly.

Nearly! A very good ball from Chris Woakes to end the over, snaking just past the outside edge.

Superb start from Woakes and that wicket will do his confidence the world of good. Wicket maiden.

    Edged and gone!

Chris Woakes has his first wicket of the match and it's a very good bit of bowling.

Probing line on off stump from round the wicket, forcing Tom Latham to play and then moving away off the seam to find the edge.

The ball goes low to second slip where Harry Brook snaffles it.

Since the start of 1 May 2022, England's number 8 and beyond are scoring at 4.24 runs per over - the highest among all Test teams in this period. Two years prior to that (from 2020 - May 2022), England's lower order scored at 3.2 rpo - fourth on the list.

Gus Atkinson is on the money from the off.

Round the wicket to Devon Conway, he keeps a good line around off stump and looks like he's got through a maiden.

However, he oversteps last ball. That no-ball the only blemish of a solid first set from the England seamer.

Chris Woakes gets the first ball to nip away from the left-handed Tom Latham and beat the edge.

Good start and after a single apiece for the Black Caps' openers, Woakes end the over with another lovely delivery.

This time it is swing to take the ball just past Latham's outside edge.

The England bowlers are out warming up, they'll hope for the same swing and seam movement their New Zealand counterparts got with the new ball yesterday morning.

Admittedly, they found less assistance with the second new ball today but that may have had something to do with England's determination to hit the shine off it as quickly as possible.

Matt Henry ends with four wickets in the innings, there were three for Nathan Smith on debut, while Tim Southee got two and there was only one for the unfortunate Will O'Rourke.

Having had England 71-4, New Zealand will know they let the tourists off the hook.

Eight (?) dropped catches will do that.

That does it for New Zealand.

Last ball of the over, Shoaib Bashir skips down to Matt Henry and tries to clear the ropes.

He manages only to send the ball skywards and Tim Southee is safely underneath it when it returns to earth.

England all out but with a very useful first-innings lead of 151.

Four more to the England total as Shoaib Bashir gets his first boundary.

It's streaky, a genuine edge as he pushes forward at a full Matt Henry delivery.

Wide of slip and away to the fence.
