Summary

  1. Zim 82-2published at 20.4 overs

    Slapped for four by Williams!

That was short and wide from Josh Tongue.

The Zimbabwe fans in the crowd are loving this.

A fine clump down the ground from Williams. He gets a pat on the back from Curran, raises his bat and his hand like he got a century.

Well played! Sean Williams gets to that sixth Test fifty with another drive for four off Josh Tongue.

He waves his bat and a fast towards the crowd. It has been classy.

  4. Zim 73-2published at 20 overs

    Curran 21, Williams 46

Gus Atkinson does come into the attack as Isa teased and he is the latest to be punched smartly by Sean Williams. That fifty is in touching distance for the 38-year-old after this boundary, his ninth.

To give a bit of context to that Sam Cook graphic below, Atkinson's percentage of balls on a good length during this match has been 37% so a fair bit less than Cook, although he has been asked to bowl more bouncers than Cook ever would.

A bit of frustration for England. They probably thought they'd have picked up two or three wickets in the first 30 minutes or so.

  6. Zim 68-2published at 19 overs

    Curran 20, Williams 42

This is an indication of the lengths Sam Cook has bowled in this Test - there's a real correlation between him pitching the ball too full and being hit for four.

Josh Tongue comes on for his first over of the day to increase the pace a little without creating too much with it.

Lovely from Sean Williams, who drives a 76mph ball from Sam Cook to the boundary in compact fashion. Williams is racing along here with 41 to his name from 22 balls.

Cook hovers around that 76mph mark for the rest of the over. Is it quick enough for Test level?

Ben Stokes has looked okay but not as venomous as yesterday, when the ball was swinging more.

This pair have played excellently, with aggressive intent. Sean Williams has played some shots. Ben Curran, one iffy shot aside, has looked controlled.

Stokes might be thinking that he has to look elsewhere [with the ball].

Ben Stokes continues to bowl a mixed bag of all sorts - a beauty to Ben Curran, one on the pads that he's grumpy about and then one so wide to Sean Williams that it is indeed called a wide.

Stokes is giving the impression of someone who is just testing himself out. It's a fact-finding mission for his body is able to do. He's not getting too frustrated.

Is anyone else extremely concerned that our three frontline bowlers are unable to swing the ball, or move it off the seam in a controlled manner, in an early summer Test?

You can make that a good 25 minutes for Zimbabwe as Sam Cook is driven for runs twice in this over. There's not a lot of movement there for Cook.

Ben Stokes is going to bowl a fourth over.

It's only 20 minutes but it's a very good 20 minutes for Zimbabwe. The conditions, you'd think, would favour the seam bowlers but it hasn't moved that much.

We've seen some marvellous shots. Both batters have been positive, played one or two slightly risky ones. They're enjoying themselves out there.

It will be interesting to see how much longer Ben Stokes bowls himself for. He hasn't taken a wicket. As a bowler, you start to hunt that wicket. But everyone is so mindful of Stokes not over-bowling himself.

  15. Zim 51-2published at 15 overs

    Curran 15, Williams 31

Come on, Mike! We complain when he doesn't bowl and when he does. Stokes needs to get overs in the legs somehow.

He bowled so well yesterday and is up at 86mph here although not quite carrying the same threat.

Mike Bell: Does Ben Stokes really need to bowl here? He has nothing to prove, it's an opportunity for the other bowlers to get Test bowling confidence and experience. He'd be better saving the overs his body can deliver for a more important time.

Ah congratulations although I am disappointed Sam and Hannah have not named one of the twins Blessing.

Good from Sam Cook, who probes away at off stump.

Twin update - Wilfred and Arthur doing well but hoping for a spirited Zimbabwe comeback to prolong the coverage.

Ben Stokes' finger is fine but his mood may not be as Sean Williams slams him for back-to-back boundaries. Stokes corrects his length afterwards and the slips all throw their hands in the air as Williams lurches forward.

Very hard caught and bowled chance. It was thumped straight back at him.

He got both hands to it, it was waist high. It's very hard in your follow through but it goes down as a dropped chance.
