    Middled!

Too short, too wide and punched superbly through the covers for four by Jamie Smith.

Six runs from the Prasidh Krishna over.

Seven more before the second new ball is available with England needing another 52 runs to win.

Prasidh Krishna and Shubman Gill are having a chat, they are trying to devise a plan. They know the pitch is a lot slower now so they need to change the field.

  3. Eng 313-5published at 72 overs

    Need another 58 to win

Ravindra Jadeja races through his latest over, just a Jamie Smith single from it.

Not much of a breather between overs for Prasidh Krishna.

Joe Root is so good on the off-side. You have to keep the stumps in play and try to force him to play straighter.

  5. Eng 312-5published at 71 overs

    Need another 59 to win

    More of that, please, Joseph!

A glorious cover drive from Root to start the Prasidh Krishna over. Four all the way.

No more runs from the over but the run-rate isn't an issue for England with 25 overs left in the day.

Amazing how negative England fans can be when fortunes change for a second. The reverse sweep is a part of the game now and contributed to the partnership needed at that time. Some positivity please!

Ravindra Jadeja has managed to extract plenty of turn in this spell, averaging 3.9° of turn in his ongoing fourth spell, compared to an average of 2.6° across his opening three spells.

There is still something happening out there for Jadeja. Some nervy moments here for England with the fall of Stokes.

  9. Eng 308-5published at 70 overs

    Need another 63 to win

Another wicket would really ramp up the tension and when Jamie Smith pushes hard at a full ball, getting a thick edge, the tension ticks up a notch further.

It lands safely but Ravindra Jadeja then turns one past the edge. The spinner is looking dangerous.

This is only the 15th Test match in which all four innings have exceeded 300 runs.

  12. Eng 306-5published at 69 overs

    Need another 65 to win

Joe Root remains an image of calm as he punches a ball through point for two and then gets on the front foot to push one more into the covers.

After some solid defence, Jamie Smith gets off the mark with a single into the leg side.

Still 27 overs left in the day.

Absolutely reckless from Stokes to keep going for the reverse sweep. Is this the beginning of a spectacular collapse for England?

    Subu, Glasgow

I will never like the reverse sweep. Too much risk.

    Jason, Wiltshire

Well that was obviously going to happen. Stokes couldn’t play the reverse sweep properly at any stage today.

Jamie Smith is looking like a very cool character out there.

  15. Eng 302-5published at 68 overs

    Need another 69 to win

Jamie Smith is the new man in and the last of the recognised batters for England - it's bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes in next.

Smith is forward to defend the last three balls of the Jadeja over, with the tension ramped up again.

I thought that had come off the body! The twists continue. There is a shake of the head from the England captain.

    This isn't done yet.

Another reverse sweep from Ben Stokes and this time the ball loops up gently off the top edge.

Simple catch for Shubman Gill at short third. Big wicket for Ravindra Jadeja and India.

This felt like a big moment. India calling for a review with Ravindra Jadeja convinced he'd got Joe Root lbw.

It was close but ball-tracking showed it was missing leg. Root remains and India are out of reviews.

  19. Eng 300-4published at 67 overs

A single to fine leg takes England to 300.

The stand between Joe Root and Ben Stokes is now worth 47.

There are 29 overs left in the day and the home side need another 71 runs.

That wasn't a bad ball, that was just good cricket from Ben Stokes. Crashed through the covers for four.
