Thing to remember here is not the time, but the runs. Yes, it's not great viewing, but New Zealand have only added 17 in 40 minutes. Question is, how many runs would England have dealt on at the start of the day? 20? 30?

  2. NZ 332-9published at 92 overs

Rinse and repeat for England as Mitchell Santner pitches a single with a push into the covers before Will O'Rourke sees off the over.

Same old story get a side nine down, then bowl at the number eight as if he’s prime Brian Lara with Geoff Boycott at the other end. Laughable.

  5. NZ 331-9published at 91 overs

Gus Atkinson beats the outside edge of Will O'Rourke's a couple of times, before a solid forward defensive from the No.11 draws warm applause.

O'Rourke is fulfilling his role perfectly at the moment.

I've a novel idea! Bowl at the top of off stump and have a normal field against a No.8 batter.

  7. NZ 331-9published at 90 overs

Mitchell Santner averages a smidgen over 24 in Test cricket fyi.

Matthew Potts finally prevents him from taking a single with the penultimate ball by banging it in short. But Potts then bowls a wide full toss that Santner slashes at and it flies away fine for four.

Santner looks a little frustrated despite the boundary because he knows Will O'Rourke will start the next over on strike.

England need to stop Santner getting singles off the 5th delivery every over. After three deliveries, bring the field in. Close the singles off.

He didn't. Clear gap between bat and ball, which brushes his thigh pad on the way through to Ollie Pope.

    On we go.

  10. New Zealand reviewpublished at 89 overs

Gus Atkinson thinks he has found Will O'Rourke's outside edge and the finger goes up - but O'Rourke reviews instantly, which suggests he is confident he didn't hit it.

How many times has Santner already played and missed, or mistimed a ball? How about bowl with a proper field and try to get him out? Maybe with some runs on offer he might actually be inclined to play a shot and offer a chance rather than this boring stalemate…

  12. Eng 326-9published at 88 overs

First boundary of the day for Mitchell Santner, who pounces on a misdirected slower ball from Matthew Potts and pulls away fine for four, perfectly dissecting the fine leg and backward square fielders.

Will O'Rourke is also starting to look relaxed out there is he blocks out his customary dot to end the over.

It feels all too comfortable for the Black Caps batters at the moment.

As a reminder, the second new ball was 11 deliveries old when play began today.

  14. NZ 321-9published at 87 overs

Mitchell Santner middles one for the first time today as he cuts to deep point. He pushes for two and is home pretty comfortably in the end because Jacob Bethell's throw isn't the best.

There's then more applause for Will O'Rourke as he blocks the final ball.

The New Zealand batters have been relatively untroubled so far.

I've just flipped into full Bazball mentality when thinking about how day two might go. "Wrap up their innings, score 400 by close of play". Not sure I'll make the family brunch tomorrow if we're batting at full pelt come lunch.

  16. NZ 318-9published at 86 overs

Matthew Potts tries a back-of-the-hand slower ball that Mitchell Santner reads and pushes into the on-side. Encouraging to see Potts trying some variation though.

Will O'Rourke is given two balls to face this time and there is a warm ripple of applause as he manages to survive both.

  17. NZ 317-9published at 82 overs

Mitchell Santner is confident enough to give Will O'Rourke one ball to face after taking a single with Gus Atkinson's fifth delivery.

Atkinson squares O'Rourke up slightly, but the No.11 manages to fend the ball away safely.

I've seen this movie before, dropping the field for the set batter. It often doesn't end well.

  19. NZ 315-9published at 84 overs

Mitchell Santner makes his intentions clear when an inside edge squirts into a gap backward of square, but he is totally unmoved. He knows he needs to dominate the strike.

Matthew Potts nearly lures the left-hander into a waft at a wide delivery outside off, before a single off the last ball means he keeps the strike.

  20. NZ 315-9published at 83 overs

    Maiden over first up.

There's a bit of early swing for Gus Atkinson as he bowls a teasing line to Will O'Rourke outside his off stump, but O'Rourke isn't tempted. He knows his job is just to stick around and let Mitchell Santner do his stuff at the other end.
