Although the last three wickets went for 116 runs - it might be a sign that the pitch is good for batting and scoring, which England will like!

  2. Eng 5-0published at 1 overs

A small win for Zak Crawley as he manages a single off his nemesis Matt Henry first ball.

Henry then gives Ben Duckett a real working over outside his off stump. Duckett is eventually tempted to have a nibble, but his thick edge flies just wide of the slips.

Excellent first over from the seamer.

Here come Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. Crawley will be desperate to end his run of poor form against New Zealand.

Matt Henry will open for the hosts. But expect to see Tim Southee come steaming in soon on his final Black Caps appearance.

England will either be bowled out cheaply and quickly or they will go mammoth.

I can't see Bazball 2.0 being played, it is going to be back to the old Bazball days.

I expect them to go really hard with the series already won. They will want to win but they will definitely go hard.

Matthew Potts ends up the pick of the England bowlers on his return to the side, taking 4-90.

Gus Atkinson finishes on 3-66. Brydon Carse, who didn't bowl this morning, took 2-78 and skipper Ben Stokes 1-91.

Mitch Santner and Will O'Rourke's 10th wicket partnership was the longest against England since Josh Da Silva and Jayden Seales lasted 25.3 overs in St George's in March 2022.

The West Indies wrapped up a comfortable 10 wicket win in that match.

New Zealand added 32 runs for the final wicket this morning. England might argue that is job done, but the final three wickets cost a hefty 116 runs.

Finally Mitchell Santner's resistance is broken with the first ball after drinks!

It is a fine delivery as well, fuller, with just enough movement to pierce Santner's defences and clatters into his off stump.

As someone who will be live texting this match through the night, seeing the bowlers keep up with the over rate and avoid an extended final session is most welcome.

Genius tactics from England to spend the morning session tiring two of the Kiwi bowlers. Inspired...

  13. NZ 347-9published at 97 overs

Great shot from Mitchell Santner as he biffs Ben Stokes back over his head and Gus Atkinson cannot pull the ball back from the rope. We have not seen much aggression like that from the Black Caps batter so far today.

There is a brief flurry of excitement as Stokes finds Santner's edge next ball, but is is well wide of the slips and New Zealand run a single.

Stokes finishes up the over with a beauty that somehow evades Will O'Rourke's bat and flies through to Pope. The England skipper cannot believe it.

  14. Eng 342-9published at 96 overs

This partnership is now worth 39, which is the third-highest of the innings.

Just a single off Matthew Potts' latest over, prompting captain Ben Stokes to take some action - he is bringing himself into the attack.

This brain freeze with the last wicket will really hurt England in the Ashes. Australia will be watching this with great interest!

  16. NZ 341-9published at 95 overs

More frustration for England as Will O'Rourke clips one off his pads and the ball races away for four.

Only 26 runs added this morning, but remember New Zealand were 231-7 at one stage on day one.

Ironic cheers as Will O'Rourke gets off the mark at the 25th attempt with a thick edge down to fine leg. Not quite Jack Leach 2019 but in the same ball park.

England cricket - outcomes are what's important.* *except when bowling to numbers 8-11. Let's bounce them/give one of them the strike/funky fields - that always works.

England are obviously wary of being too loose and suddenly find New Zealand pushing 400 (that could still happen of course).

Just the single off the over, but the highlight was some nifty keepy-uppy skills from Gus Atkinson that Brydon Carse tries to imitate but ends up in a heap on the floor.
